Commander / EDH* GU (Simic)

This deck might be too slow for cEDH, but with some proper tuning it can go infinite in turn 5 or 6 which makes it rather competitive. Ramp cards help the deck to speed it up. Best ramp are creatures, because they can trigger your Commander later in the game. So all the mana-dorks which are allowed in a Simic deck are in it.

Further there are ramp-creatures like Kiora's Follower and Sakura-Tribe Elder who ramp and trigger the Commander aswell. Devoted Druid and Gyre Sage work well with the +1/+1 counters in the game. To fill out the ramp spots there are cards who let you search for or play extra lands or artifacts that speed up your mana base. I am still fine tuning my ramp so help here is appriciated.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary is the ultimate tutor commander. His first ability, triggered by a green creature allows you to tutor your deck for a creature and put it on top of your deck. His second ability, triggered by a blue creature allows you to draw a creature from the top of your deck.

So if the creature is both blue and green you are allowed to do both. The deck is loaded with cheap Simic creatures. Their main purpose is tutoring the creatures you need to go for the win. Best example is Slippery Bogle. This hybrid creature triggers both of Momir Vig, Simic Visionary abilities letting you tutor and draw for only 1 CMC.

Keep in mind that your cheap green creatures can be played as the last spell in your turn topping your deck for the next turn. This is a powerful tool which really can make a difference when playing in a competitive meta. When you are in doubt of what is the best move in your next turn, putting a cheap Simic creature on top might be a good option.

This deck main-idea is build around this combo: Altered Ego + Master Biomancer + Sage of Hours . Master Biomancer is a creature with a nice ability giving all your creatures +1/+1 counters when entering the battlefield. The deck uses this ability to buff up your creatures. Momir Vig can make chains of creatures going for a fast win-con.

Because Master Biomancer only gives two counters which is not that much there are Shapeshifters in the deck to copy the Biomancer. Best creature for that is Altered Ego. Playing it without the and copying the Biomancer makes two creatures with the same ability. With both in play creatures will enter the battlefield with six +1/+1 counters (two for the Biomancer and four for the copy).

This is where Sage of Hours comes in. If the Sage enters the battlefield with six counters on it, the counters can be removed immediatly to take an extra turn. After this there are several ways to go to infinite turns. Bouncing the Sage is option number one, for this the deck uses Temur Sabertooth. Copying the Sage is option number two. For this option the deck uses Progenitor Mimic

Your perfect opening hand contains at least three lands, one mana-dork, one other ramp card and a Simic creature with a CMC lower then 2. With these cards in your opening hand it might be possible to go off in turn 5. If you have this opening hand, this is how do you play your first three turns:

The first three turns.

  • Turn 1: Play Forest or a Dual Land, tap one mana and play a Mana Dork
  • Turn 2: Play land, tap x mana and ramp again (dork, extra land or artifact)
  • Turn 3: Play land, tap five mana and play the Commander

So now we have Momir Vig, Simic Visionary out. Let's see how the next few turns can go. There are different routes to infinite turns, depending on your mana-acceleration and overal board state. Maybe you want to slow down your own play a little bit to keep free mana to opposite threats.

Route to infinite, example I

Route to infinite, example II

Route to infinite, example III

Route to infinite, example IV

With Verdurous Gearhulk it is possible to put five +1/+1 counters on Sage of Hours in one single action. With bounce cards like Tradewind Rider or Temur Sabertooth it is an alternative route to go infinite.

Most games will end by opponents scooping the game. But there might be some smart-ass opponents wanting to see your win-con. If you go infinite on turns, bouncing back all opponents (non-land) permanents and then strike with all your creatures is the way to win. For bouncing you can use Tradewind Rider or Cyclonic Rift. It is impossible to mill yourself with cards like Timetwister and Nantuko Tracer or Grazing Kelpie.
