Mono Black Devotion for Modern (With a splash of Green and White)
Mainboard:
Guul Draz Assassin
- Easy spot removal of creatures
Viscera Seer- Gets around spot removal for a free scry
Bloodghast- Aggressive all game long with sweet reanimator
Gatekeeper of Malakir- Solid 2 drop and for an extra black, your opponent sac's a creature
Geralf's Messenger- 3 devotion, they lose two life, AND with Undying
Athreos, God of Passage- Athreos makes sure all my creatures come back from a board wipe or even spot removal, can go in good conjunction with other creatures in the deck and getting 7 devotion isn't that hard
Phyrexian Obliterator- 4 drop for a 5/5 with trample and a pseudo Annihilator, freakin' SWEET!
Demigod of Revenge- 5 devotion for a 5/4 flying and haste that brings back all his brothers from the grave when you cast him, yes please
Gray Merchant of Asphodel- A must-have in any black devotion deck, helps create a huge life gap between you and your opponent
Profane Command- You are gonna be able to generate a LOT of mana with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx might as well have a pseudo win method other than bash in face :)
Liliana of the Veil- A must-have in ANY deck that has black in it, helps get Bloodghast and Demigod of Revenge in the graveyard early so they can come back with friends
Mind Slash
- Didn't have enough room for Thoughtseize, but is a good replacement, being able to sac creatures to remove ANY card in our opponents hands is really nice, especially when Athreos, God of Passage is out to help get our creatures back in our hand
Phyrexian Arena- Simply to have card advantage over our opponent
Cavern of Souls- Threw in this explanation for those who don't see the weird thing from the start. When I built this deck, I didn't notice that almost half of all my creatures were Vampires. So Cavern works well against counters, especially if you need any of your bigger cards to hit the board with no fear from a counter.
Sideboard:
Abrupt Decay- Solid removal that can't be countered
Beast Within- My only defense against Iona, Shield of Emeria
Maelstrom Pulse- Another spot removal that hits all copies, good against goblin tokens in storm or hitting anything else thats above 3 converted mana cost
Riot Control- My only defense against Storm deck, whether its Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens
Tribute to Hunger- Gets around Protection (dumb Etched Champion -__- #), Indestructible, and Hexproof. Also great against fighting big Urza creatures like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, you are able to not only save yourself from certain destruction, but you gain 10 to 15 life from it!!
Damnation- Better Wrath of God
Leyline of the Void- Works against opponents reanimator, flashback, or cards like Elixir of Immortality, and it shuts down Living End.
Any comments or constructive criticism for the benefit of this deck is much appreciated, Thank You.
