Ever since Shorecrasher Elemental was spoiled, I was interested in trying a mono-blue devotion deck. Of the few that I saw in various tournaments, they were all running Ensoul Artifact and a lot of cards to work around that as well as springleaf drum. I tried that, and felt like it just wasn't good enough, and it was extremely frustrating to have dead cards in my hand, waiting for the other pieces, so I wanted to try to get rid of all of the gimicky cards and focus on one gameplan, putting a lot of blue dudes on the board.

With access to cheap creatures, and military intelligence, I agreed that it was a good drawing engine, but felt like Bident of Thassa was being overlooked, as it gives 2 devotion, lets you draw more cards, and without the stipulation of attacking with multiples, and has a nice ability that pairs well with polymorphist's jest, and aetherspouts. Or just to force an opponent to tap their creatures if they're trying to just clog the board.

Monastery Siege main board is another way this deck differs from the other mono blue decks I saw, and I feel like I've gotten good value from it, as it helps protect you from the various cheap removal spells that threaten the gameplan. Hall of Triumph serves a similar role, letting the elementals stay on the board of Master of Waves doesn't make it.

The various counterspells are there mainly to keep the board in place after you drop the Master. Stubborn denial is actually pretty easy to get ferocious on with Thassa, Shorecrasher who can be pumped up to a 4/2 or who is base 4/4 with Master of Waves on the board or Hall of Triumph out.
