Ghalta, Primal Hunger EDH

Featured in the Elder Dinosaur Highlander episode of The Trinisphere.

Concept

Ghalta really only lends to one style of play: Punching people in the face. He discounts himself according to the total power of our board, so we're going with a creature-heavy ramp package with some abnormally large beaters thrown in the mix.

How It Plays

It surprises me how easily it is to cast Ghalta with just two or three guys on the battlefield. Getting him down fast and abusing his huge body with power-matters cards can quickly bury opponents in card advantage. Additionally, it is very difficult to deal with a 12/12 trampler that deals Commander damage, so attacking with our Commander will be our primary path to victory.

Card Selection

• Greater Good, Garruk, Primal Hunter, and Traverse the Outlands serve as ways to abuse Ghalta's huge size.
• Cultivator's Caravan, Wayward Swordtooth, Khalni Hydra, and Rhonas the Indomitable are all under-costed creatures with high power.
• Smuggler's Copter gives our mana dorks some late-game value while boosting our total power by 3 and providing a loot ability to get rid of dead land draws.
• Horn of Greed gives us a valuable draw engine that we can gain asymmetrical advantage from since we have several cards that allow us to play multiple lands a turn like Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Wayward Swordtooth, and Oracle of Mul Daya.
• Elvish Mystic, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, and Arbor Elf provide us the basis of our ramp package, being preferable over traditional sorceries since they discount Ghalta.
• song of dryads , Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Beast Within are our traditional options for dealing with any combo pieces or troublesome permanents
• Krosan Grip, Reclamation Sage, and Worldbreaker can pick up the Artifacts and Enchantments.
• selvala, heart of the wild provides both draw and can generate huge amounts of mana to feed into The Great Aurora game resets or Genesis Wave flooding the board.
• Lifecrafter's Bestiary, Harmonize, Sylvan Library, Tireless Tracker, Rishkar's Expertise, Shamanic Revelation, Elemental Bond, Kozilek, Butcher of Truths, and Zendikar Resurgent fill out our draw power.
• Treetop Villages and Mutavault can temporarily boost our power to cheat a ghalta into play with slightly more efficiency than simply tapping them for 1.
