Hello! This is my personal iteration of a mono-green mutate deck. I've seen many that try to use Umori the Collector as a companion, but I think cutting yourself off from all the non-creature spells really takes away from the deck's strength for an effect that isn't going to be SUPER useful given the amount of mana we'll generate. I've also seen iterations that seem to be wary of playing some of the stompier creatures in favor of more Mutants or Essence Symbiote, but I say that if we're gonna be cheating permanents into play, let's make them some powerful ones! I've had success in BO1 and BO3 using this build and hope you will too if you decide to try it for yourself.
HIDDEN GEMS!!!
- Gargos, Vicious Watcher: This card actually has some great synergy with the deck. Mutating a creature onto another counts as casting a spell that targets our creature which triggers its fight effect. Buh-bye Broodmoth. This also leads us to our next card!
-
Ram Through: Target creature we control deals damage to another target creature we don't AND deals damage if we have trample? This is amazing! This card lets GREEN of all colors to assassinate value creatures, take out fatties we'd otherwise be trading with, AND blows up death-touchers without having to "Fight" them and trade out. Playing this with Gargos on the field can make it a two-for-one as well.
-
Adventurous Impulse: Does what it says on the tin, giving us a missed land drop or finding that three mana mutate card to get the ball rolling... Or just one of our game-enders!
-
Mirror Shield: Are you playing against black? Are you tired of your massive monsters being sidelined by a one-drop death touch? Is Agent of Treachery turning your dreams into screams? Then this is the card for you! Giving your mutate stack hexproof and allowing them to trod over speedbumps like Vampire of the Dire Moon without worry.
-
Aggressive Mammoth: Auspicious Starrix is usually going to be on top and has a nice 6/6 body (meowww~) However he can be chump blocked to hell if you didn't put a Gem-Razer onto the mutate stack. I only run two at the moment, so that's not uncommon for me. So Mammoth can help force the opponent to hold back multiple blockers to stop us from chunking their life total.
Tips!!!
Some things I've picked up while playing this deck are... Always draw cards with Return of the Wildspeaker unless the +3/+3 is lethal. Don't try to use this as a sneaky combat trick, as most of the time you'll just end up wishing you had four to six more cards in hand.
Hold onto Arboreal Grazer in the mid to late game. Having a one-drop you can mutate onto that same turn can be the difference between your head exploding or your opponent scooping. Plus it gives you something easily discarded against Ashiok and Kroxa.
Be careful with Gargos and Ram-Through if you're targeting the big beast itself as the fight effect will trigger and appear first on the stack. So always target the higher power creature with Ram-Through and then fight the value creature. Otherwise Gargos might die before getting the damage in.
Hold back against control decks that include white. Otherwise they just Shatter the Skies and you end up with nothing. I think most people know this, but make sure you're actually putting it into practice... Unlike me! MUST SMASH!!!
Cards I like but don't know if they'll fit...
Mostly its Season of Growth which triggers off of mutate and Ram Through as well. However I've been burned by it before so I took it out in favor of more non-human three drops like Crystaline Giant. It's a good enchantment, but maybe not quite good enough.
Nylea, Keen-Eyed is another one, but I've found the active ability somewhat underwhelming, and if we have just the mutate stack in play, we only get the devotion for the top creature, so she's not unlikely to be stuck as an enchantment more often that we'd like.
Anyway! That's a basic run-down of the deck. Hopefully you like what you see (please tell me I'm a secret genius) and I'm open to suggestions. Particularly when it comes to which cards might be able to come out in favor of something like Questing Beast.
