Deck Overview

Mono White Emeria Control is a tap out control deck that utilizes the interactions between Sun Titan and Emeria, The Sky Ruin to set up an endgame that the opponent wont be able to beat. It takes advantage of Enters the Battlefield triggers and recursion to gain huge amounts of advantage over the course of the game, while coincidentally stalling to the late game by using these ETB creatures as chump blockers, alongside other general stall tactics.

What is Tap Out Control?

Tap Out control decks go against the traditional notion of a control deck by being proactive, and so much so that the opponent will find themselves on the back foot and on the defense from the beginning of the game through to when you are casting huge threats that they cannot deal with. As opposed to traditional control that wants to be reactive - usually holding back on their own turn to keep mana up for counterspells and instant speed removal - Tap Out control takes full advantage of their own turn, using all of their mana as efficiently as possible on each of their turns; hence the name Tap Out.

Why Play this Deck?

Mono White Emeria Control is the deck for a player who wants to take a proactive, yet unconventional approach to the format. The deck is one of the most synergistic in the format, and extremely resilient with few truely bad matchups. A skilled pilot will also appreciate how often their opponent will stop to read every card that is being played because the deck is essentially made of cards that have at one point been left behind at the draft table.

History

The original Emeria decks were played back in Zendikar standard in effort to combat the Jund Menace of the time. Pilgrim's Eye being recurred with Emeria, The Sky Ruin turned out to be an excellent way to deal with Blightning, the main discard spell of the time, because the user could effectively fetch for a basic to discard each turn instead of a relevant spell. Soon after, the now extinct Extended format allowed players with an appreciation for this style play to go back to the deck with a new addition in Sun Titan. In 2014, a version of the deck was able to 4-0 a modern daily event on MTGO, which caught the attention of several notable YouTube personalities including the Rogue DeckBuilder and MTGGoldfish, who each within a year presented a budget series on the deck. Several video series on the deck have been uploaded since by some popular YouTubers, and the deck remains a staple Tier 3 option in the format. The popular version of the archetype has since moved into blue to combat some of the decks worst matchups, but a Mono White version still exists for those who are nostalgic for the deck, those that want a bit more of a challenge, those that are on a slightly tighter budget, or those that just want to brew something a bit different.

The Sideboard for this deck is a bit funky because we have access to basically all the best SB cards in the format being in white. Basically just pick and choose based on what you expect to be playing against.

Matchups

THIS SECTION IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION BECAUSE IM BAD SORRY

This section will only pertain to my specific deck list. You are capable of changing your list to suit your needs, so for example if everyone and their mother is playing jund, you might not be packing as much hate for the combo matchups.

Jund: Show

This match, as with all of junds matches, is pretty 50/50. Sometimes they rip our hand into oblivion and theres nothing we can do. Other times we resolve a titan. Game one is significantly easier because they cant really interact with Emeria so if you can make it past turn 6 then you should be in the clear. Games 2 and 3 they can adjust to bring in grave and / or land hate and we lost a few percentage points, but its still a pretty even match.

GR Tron: Show

Basically unwinnable. This is the hardest matchup that the deck has because everything that theyre doing is just better than what were doing. This build is meant to tackle aggressive decks, and tron is meant to tackle decks that tackle aggressive decks. Youd better be packing 99 Ghost Quarters. SB cards that help here, Suppression Field, Pithing Needle naming Karn and / or Ugin, Stony Silence

UWR Nahiri / Control: Show

Surprisingly easy matchup. They can make plays, but they struggle to deal with the emeria engine once its online. Some tips are to get aggressive with your chumps early for those free points of damage, and try as hard as you can to keep their lands in check.

Burn: Show

Im not going to say that Emeria shreds burn, because it can certainly lose, but the matchup is approx. 70/30 in Emerias favor when built to handle the matchup. Game one is the hardest matchup because Blessed Alliance and Leyline of Sanctity come in out of the board. Makes the game really tough for burn.

Affinity: Show

This is probably the hardest matchup of the three main aggro decks in modern because of the sheer amount of creature lands they have at their disposal. They get hit pretty hard by Wrath of God, but the creature lands plus plating can help them recover almost effortlessly. As with every game Vs affinity, Game one is the hardest. Fragmentize, Stony Silence, Suppression Field all make their day much harder.

Infect: Show

Infect is probably the easiest of the three main aggro decks in modern for Emeria to handle. Between Wall of Omens and Pilgrim's Eye on chumping duty to Displacer blinking their buffed dude to Kami of False Hope being in the deck, they have a very difficult time if they dont win the game by turn four. Its still hard to beat the turn three kill, but if they dont have it the matchup gets exponentially more difficult for them as the game progresses. Celestial Flare effects and more Fog effects out of the board help more, but really the matchup is pretty straightforward.

This matchup is super difficult because we have zero ways main deck to interact with their plan. Basically once you see a Temple of Deceit, just concede and bring in your leylines, Suppression Fields, and Pithing Needles. Post SB games are around 50/50 unless theyre packing the Lab Maniac package.

Storm: Show

Similar to Ad Naus, this matchup is pretty rough because we have almost no ways to interact with them. Emerias SB plan is also just generally weaker because the only real things to bring in are grave hate and leyline. Not a good matchup at all.

Boggles: Show

This matchup is super easy until they find a way to give their dude trample because we have infinite chump blockers. Kami of False Hope is also an all star here. Game one is pretty 50/50, but siding in Celestial Flare effects swings it in our favor a bit more.
