Muldrotha the Gravetide Light

Commander / EDH*

deafhobbit

Sultai Goodstuff. Ramp. Tutors. Answers. Haymakers. Recursion. Most of the cards are just individually powerful, but there are three engines at the heart of the deck.

  • Academy Ruins + Nevinyrral's Disk or Oblivion Stone to stall the board.

  • Cabal Coffers + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to power out a big play.

  • Season's Past + a tutor + spells to mess with other people. Ideally paired with Reliquary Tower or Kruphix to not have to discard to hand size.

The main decision in the early game is figuring out which of these three engines to set up first. Once one is running, the other two can be set up pretty easily if needed. From there, the plan is to keep hitting land drops, disrupting opponents, running out threats that need to be answered, and building card advantage. Eventually, the deck aims to win with Eldrazi, Exsanguinate, Torment of Hailfire, or just beating down.

The counterspell suite mostly is biased towards cheaper spells, to help defend your own spells. Plasm Capture is the one exception, and it's there to set up big plays.

This used to be a Tasigur deck, where Tasigur was mostly just a bad backup plan in the Command Zone. He was often not cast, and rarely that impactful when he was. In this deck, Muldrotha is still meant to be a backup plan, just hopefully a better one. A few cards were swapped to work better with her, like Sakura-Tribe Elder for Farseek, or Seal of Primordium for Krosan Grip, but the deck is mostly unchanged. The deck doesn't need her in play to function, and the plan is to leave her in the Command Zone unless I can get some immediate value.

Havengul Lich should probably switch to The Scarab God when he rotates out or gets reasonably priced.
