TL;DR: Trying to combine efficient creatures and auras to get punchy in a multiplayer setting.

Kitchen table multi-player with a mixture of modern legal*/commander decks with each player starting at 30 life points. Usually 4 players per table.

Based on a loose application of the work done by MTG Data Science and their Vanilla Creature Calculator @ https://mtgds.shinyapps.io/Empirical_Vanilla_Test/.

I wanted to take a look at which modern legal creatures and auras represented the largest differential between how much the card cost to cast, and the expected mana value for the power/toughness and card effects on said cards.

For my purposes I'm treating each card as if it was just released at common (since I only care about card value at the time of deck construction and rarity has no impact within my play group).

Looking at most of the sorcery cards in modern allowed me to take a linear regression to approximate the expected mana value of a creature or aura card drawing a card on ETB (2.223 for 1 card, 3.066 for 2, 3.899 for 3... and using the two instances of sorcery speed draw 3 then discard 1s, I estimated draw 2 discard 1 as a expected mana value of 2.965).

I then approximated the expected mana value of modern legal auras that improved creature stats as if they were the pips, power/toughness, and keyword abilities of creatures. This highlighted

  • Cartouche of Knowledge at -1.723 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Rousing Read at -1.465 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Aqueous Form at -1.135 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Arcane Flight at -0.800 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • One With the Wind at -0.700 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Spectral Flight at -0.700 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Rune of Flight at -0.623 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.
  • Curiosity at +0.188 difference between expected mana value and actual printed costs.

Most of the auras to have a diff below 0.5 in red did so giving haste, and I already knew I wanted to include Charging Monstrosaur as part of my top end, so I focused on looking at creatures that had trample in the next section.

The list of Trample creatures that happened to be efficiently costed lead to a dinosaur sub-theme as

By itself Champion of the Flame isn't so hot (0.8 diff), but if we attach one Rune of Flight to it, the approximate diff becomes -2.122, and will scale up the more of our auras we can attach to it.

Since we were likely to be running so many dinosaurs, I've decided to test out some Earthshaker Dreadmaw (-0.2 without card draw) to see how many cards I might draw late game, but the boardwipe meta made this a card I wasn't as happy to have.

Since there is no easy way to estimate the token creation value of Quartzwood Crasher I'll use this section to record the values of X/X Trampler tokens created in games.

  • 10
  • 4
  • Games QWC played = 1
  • Total power created = 14
  • Tokens created = 2
  • Average p/t of token = 7
  • Expected Mana Value for Average Token p/t = 8.6

Since the value of Ancient Imperiosaur is variable I'll use this section to record the values of P/T it entered the battlefield with.

  • 10
  • Games Anc Imp played = 1
  • Total power entered = 10
  • Copies Played = 1
  • Average p/t = 10
  • Expected Mana Value for Average Imperiosaur = 14.79

~Maybe Board~ Creatures: Yidaro, Wandering Monster at -2.8, Gruul Spellbreaker at -2.325, Quartzwood Crasher at -1.135* Not including the variable value of token generation, Owlbear at -1.023
