Currently, the meta game is not looking too good for our slippery bogle friends. As of 01 AUG 2020, white/green bogles only make up 0.79% of the meta. Things are not looking good for these delicate creatures, and if they hope to survive they will need to evolve to the new meta. Or in this case, mutate.
This new take on a classic strategy plays with the new mechanic introduced in Ikoria, Lair of Behemoths: mutate. Instead of going with the traditional aura strategy, this deck is more like Build-A-Bogle. Our main goal will be taking cheap creatures with hexproof and applying different mutations. The two base creatures worth mentioning are Slippery Bogle and Silhana Ledgewalker. Both enter play with hexproof, however Silhana Ledgewalker also comes with being unblockable. Arcane Flight and Rancor are included to give evasion to Slippery Bogle and provide a power boost.
As far as mutations, we have some interesting cards in the deck. Sea-Dasher Octopus is a flashier Curiosity yes pun intended that will help us keep a full hand and continue drawing into answers. Gemrazer is perfect for artifact/enchantment removal. With the generally low-costing mutate effects, it will be easy triggering Gemrazer's ability. Parcelbeast acts as both ramp and card draw. While not the most consistent, it can still help in the late game when we keep drawing into lands and desperately need an answer.
Mutate itself is a weird mechanic that has raised a lot of questions, especially regarding how it interacts with temporary creatures (manlands, vehicles, etc). The following is quoted from MTG Wiki regarding rulings:
"If a mutating creature spell merges with a creature that's only temporarily a creature, it will remain a merged permanent when the effect making it a creature expires. It still has all of the characteristics of the topmost object, which may cause it to be a creature or to not be a creature, and it has all of the abilities of its other cards."
With this clarification, I instantly realized something we couldn't do in the traditional Bogles deck. The typical Bogles deck doesn't include Inkmoth Nexus because the auras will drop off once it returns to being a land. With the new mutate mechanic, this no longer becomes a problem. And unless WoTC tries changing the ruling, I fully intend to take advantage of this wacky interaction.
The sideboard contains what you would expect: a mix of artifact hate as well as removal. Rhonas the Indomitable is a noteworthy inclusion who not only comes with valuable keywords, but also a way to pump up our attackers.
Feel free to playtest the deck and give me any feedback!
