Have you thought about Waste Not?

No Waste Not?

Waste not is something I might also recommend -- it adds a lot of value, maybe worth it? I would also like to reiterate that Chains of Mephistopheles is great and should be in here if it wasn't a million dollars

Possessed Portal. Yup, it's expensive. But you are likely going to be able to play it if your other stax pieces get shut down. Another line of redundancy, discards to make elves, makes people sacrifice permanents at EACH end step (crazy in multiplayer) and shuts down all but a few sources of card advantage:

Sylvan Library is a death sentence

Sensei's Divining Top kills itself

Bant hurr draw cards is done for (no edric / derevi annihilation)

The only way around it is hard-on heavy black cards like Dark Confidant and Necropotence ... or some kind of repetitive tutor .. or Squee, Goblin Nabob

I realize in hindsight that those are much more arguments for chains than portal, but yolo.

I tried Waste Not and it was actually lackluster. I could try and test it again, it might have just been a series of bad games for it. Possessed Portal really has my attention but the cmc of 8 always keeps me from running it. that's not to say I'd have trouble hitting 8 mana, I just don't want hands clogged up by having Portal hamming it up. Chains of Mephistopheles may be going in soon, I'm selling some legacy staples and some of the money will probably go to getting a copy.

Yeah, I feel like every turn you have Possessed Portal in your hand is just another opportunity for it to get wasted by Nath or Bottomless Pit. You might have a game where you draw it on turn 3-5 and just end up discarding it because you can't immediately play it.

The less you have to devote to the stax piece, the better. That being said, it is really good. I am at a loss as to whether it should go in or not. I know that I have fun running it in shirei, but that usually has a Phyrexian Altar or Ashnod's Altar to force it into play and a Necropotence to continue with card advantage

My other problem is that it triggers on the end step, with the amount of combo decks I play against portal can do nothing, as they'll simply combo out. If a player needs the cards in hand to combo, they can sac a permanent or if they need their board state they just discard. It feels meh for 8 mana.

Well... if they already have the cards in hand, there isn't much you can do. In a 4 man game though, thats one permanent or card on each turn per player. Portal and Smokestack together? Pretty gross.

That being said, I don't think it would do well here. Maybe in like... Karn, or something. But not here

Have you ever tried worm harvest for fodder?

Thought about it, and it's on my radar. Hasn't wowed me in theory.

You messed up your code a bit.

I got rid of some of it, I don't like the lack of a gap but I've been lazy in regards to fixing it.

I don't need the cbc dropped enough to spend ~300bucks on it. I'd like to but I have bills n shit. That money has to go to more dumb things like Nether Voids

Gspot this deck inspired me to do a similar style on golgari lockdown/discard, i got my nether void for $15 (terrible condition, but a bit of glue, a sleeve, and some paint to "alter" made it playable)

That's awesome man! Glad you found some inspiration in the list. 15 dollar nether void is still a nether void.

Why not run cards like Liliana's Caress or Painful Quandary?

JuicyPVP says... #21

I have never played Commander, and am looking to get into it. I've spent like 20+ hours looking at decks and this is by far the most interesting. I will be proxy-ing it.

EndStepTop says... #22

I font. Need cards to win, just keep my opponents from winning. Hence no Lilly's caress. Quandry is far too costly and situational. For the same mana I can use Mind Slash andThoughtseize twice.

JuicyPVP awesome man! It's a blast to play, unlike a large amount of edh lists you aren't playing a durdly midrange game. Hope you enjoy it!

Have you thought about running more cards that pair with Nath's discard effect? Waste Not, Liliana's Caress, The Rack, Shrieking Affliction and other cards with similar effects can work pretty well in a deck like this if you want to take it that direction.

I run a Kaalia deck that aims to freeze the board state as much as possible once I get Kaalia of the Vast out. The thought is that I can use her to sneak out creatures then win while everyone else is struggling to do anything at all after I've blown up their lands, increased their casting costs, and limited what spells they can cast.

You might be able to do something similar with this deck if you get some of those discard triggered spells out early, get Nath out, then lockdown the board state.

Maybe that's not a direction you want to go with this deck, but I think it might work well. +1

I don't run those effects because they don't help with deck's main goal. This isn't a discard based deck, rather a resource denial deck that benefits (greatly) from discard. I don't want to use up slots I could dedicate to lockout pieces, since the damage those effects produce is marginal.
