To be fair most affinity players won't actually be able to pay for most of their artifacts and once they've unloaded their hand and then been forced to sacrifice most of their stuff it's GG.

Not really. Most of the time their lands are not artifacts, and so they don't sac anything and might still have a land or two for casting shit. Or they can just fucking kill it.
But I want to emphasize that I'm not saying Kataki is bad, just worse.

Wait, why the hell do you run caryatid? It isn't exactly modern playable, since curves are low and it does pretty much nothing.

I've honestly never had a single problem with Kataki. But here's a problem with running Stony Silence, it doesn't work with the deck. Kataki is nice because I have a better chance at getting it onto the field if I don't have it in hand because of Congregation at Dawn and Collected Company. And don't forget mana ramp means that those are turns 2 and 3 respectively. Putting in Stony Silence means that I'm a lot less likely to find my sideboard hate to guarantee a win on turns 2 and 3.
And yes, Kataki literally does act like a board wipe to affinity, because affinity only has around 2 or 3 non-artifact mana producers on the field at any given time, and not to mention that it stops them from playing ADDITIONAL spells. As for removal, I'm generally sticking in both Spellskite and Burrenton Forge-Tender with Kataki to protect it.

Um, it does fucking nothing against RDW...
And Kataki is NOT a board wipe to affinity, NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Scorprix, can't be removed (which is a problem facing RDW and Jund), slows down hatebears and RDW, and it's hexproof works wonders with Worship.

It stops Guide, Swiftspear, all those guys, and can't be burned.
May 25, 2015 3:41 p.m.
It does not stop guide or swiftspear since RDW is usually Naya, and runs Atarka's Command. Worship can be removed. And it is not good against jund at all...

I mean, she's running two unique mana dorks.... and Hierarch is a one drop, so it's not that big an issue. I'm assuming the fact that it can't be targeted is the prime reason she's running it (it just being a wall is seems like it would be a waste), but I mean, regardless of having a one drop dork, acceleration as a two drop in Modern really seems super awkward. I understand why she's running Kataki, it's what Pod was running in its sideboard against affinity. Really the main issue, at least in my opinion, is that if you're trying to run a toolbox approach with CoCo, it is strictly worse than Pod was, so why attempt to do what another deck did? I really like CoCo in an aggro shell and CoCoChord Elves is actually pretty good, but it's definitely not a replacement for Birthing Pod. You can't just tutor for whatever you want and pop it into play and she's not running Chord of Calling. She has to hit Congregation AND CoCo to toolbox successfully. With Congregation only being a two of, I think I'd rather see Stony Silence in the board.

Being a 2 drop may seem a little awkward, but it still allows for turn 3 Collected Company and Worship, which are the main goals. Beyond that, a toolbox approach isn't how this deck plays, and you don't need Collected Company to get value out of Congregation at Dawn. The general style of this deck is to put multiple creatures onto the battlefield that a particular deck has troubles dealing with. For abzan and junk, this is Auriok Champion and Mirran Crusader. For Twin and rdw, this is Auriok Champion and Spellskite ... etc etc.

Do you consistently have enough mana during play tests? 19 lands seems a bit low.

Indeed I do PerfectDisguise. I have 6 dorks and 4 vials to help as well. However this is using the T/O playtester, so it might not be very representative of the real world.
June 13, 2015 11:44 p.m.
Hey! How often do you playtest? Tiny bit concerned with 19 lands, 6 dorks and 4 collected company. I haven't played the deck though so I don't know how often you get stuck. Might be worth looking into.

I playtest fairly often and don't have too much trouble with 19 lands, 6 dorks and 4 vials. Though I haven't actually built a detailed list of how many times I've gotten mana screwed out of all the times I haven't. I'll wait till I get a reliable build going before I do that.

A huge +1 from me for the crazy amount of work this must have taken.

This one certainly isn't up to date yet FineCashew9, as a new meta change made Tron, Zoo, Scapeshift and Junk more prevalent, and made Delver, Grixis Control and Elves non-existent.

Heh. I just added like, $300 to this deck's price.

Yes, but Kataki SLOWS DOWN affinity, while 'stoner' can acctually singlehandedly KILL affinity. And your plan takes all the way to T4 to set up. Affinity also has removal and can win by then. I'll look up some stuff that can be a good compromise of creature and disruption.
