My Experience With Tiny Leader

Tiny Leaders

Sideboard

I have played more magic in June than the last two years combined. Modern on Monday, Tinyleader on Tuesday, Standard on Wednesday, EDH on Thursday, Draft on Friday, Casual on Saturday and Modern Master on Sunday. Spell Slinging in different formats has never been this much fun. Today I want to share what I experienced and learned in a particular format, the format that granted me a chance to win my set of Plateaus.

Tiny Leaders

  1. What is Tiny Leaders?TL is a 50 card singleton format. Like EDH, each deck has a general, and the general decide the colors for the deck. Nothing in the deck can have a CMC cost greater than 3.

  2. Why Marath?Marath is incredibly versatile. It does so many things I can't even remember all of them. Sometimes I even wonder if Marath designed itself into a magic card just to show off its goodies. In addition, Marath represents Zoo. I have always played Zoo, and Zoo offers great consistency in a singleton format like this. TL on a large scale closely mimic legacy format, and Naya Zoo has just the right answer to nuke most of the threats.

  3. How has the deck been performing? Throughout the month, I've played over fifty TL games against around twenty decks, over half of the games in tournaments. Marath has lost a total of three games.

  4. The value of Burn in TL?Is what makes this deck great. In my local meta, there are multiple cradle powered Ezuri Elf-ball decks. My OG TL deck tiny Doran felt too slow against them, so I changed to Marath to better proactively deal with the threats. When I play against slower decks, I can sometimes just burn them down to reach victory.

  5. Common Misconceptions in TL?a. I ran into a number of players who argued that Aurelia's fury / Comet Storm is better than cards like Arc Lightning / Flames of the Firebrand in this deck as well as the format. I disagree. When I need to play my removal, I need to play it to save myself or win the game. I want the most mana efficiency for the spells I cast. b. Do not over evaluate X cost spells. I recommend a max number of two X cost spells in any TL deck.c. I'm not a fan of cards like ponder, preordain and the like. TL is so small, every card matters a great deal. When my opponent spent a card and a mana to dig, I know I'm just that much closer to winning the game. This does not mean I hate top, because top is fantastic in combo and control TL decks.

TL is an exciting format. It has been a while since I got to play around with ideas for new decks. I think it's exciting, and most of the games you play will be very close. The tournament side of things are very cutthroat, but that apply to any other format. If you haven't tried it out, I strongly recommend it! And if you have questions about anything in regards to this deck and/or TL in general, feel free to ask! I will try to reply as much as I can. _
