Why?
So that Diabolic Revelation has something good to find with that Crypt Ghast in play. For example, a turn 5 Diabolic Revelation for 4 or 5 cards can fetch Chromatic Lantern , Door to Nothingness , and a couple Prophetic Prism s. In theory, that could be a turn 7 win with DtN, which is faster than any other card I can think of. Seems faster than Mind Grind , Sands of Delirium , or a couple of direct damage spells (which would require at least Chromatic Lantern and may not get me past 20. I took out the shock lands to avoid the loss of life.

Ok, some more playtesting. Not a terrible deck. I got the Door to work on turn seven, that was fun in mono black. But I think turn 6 with Liliana of the Dark Realms and two Essence Harvest is faster. That is, turn 3 Phylactery Lich , turn 4 Crypt Ghast , turn 5 Diabolic Revelation for Liliana and the two Essence Harvest s, turn 6 use her -3 along with the two Essence Harvests.
So, I took the DtN and Mill wincons out of maindeck. Will experiment with this a bit.

I was actually thinking of doing something similar. Maybe Army of the Damned and/or Lord of the Void .

I had Lord of the Void in an earlier iteration, but took him out in favor of Mikaeus, the Unhallowed . Mikaeus works well with Mutilate and is a more attainable hardcast. Griselbrand gives me the lifelink that is often critical at that point.
I initially dismissed Army of the Damned , as incompatible with Mutilate , but you've got me thinking. It's harder to sweep twice than spot remove twice.

What is your plan if you don't get out Crypt Ghast ? Something I have learned on my deck is that he is not always going to show up, and if you dont have some sort of backup you are in a lot of trouble.

Why do you have Door to Nothingness in a mono-black deck?
