Sideboard

Three-card Monte is a con game where the mark attempts (and, inevitably, fails) to find the money card among three cards.

Mary O'Kill lets us play this game with more than three cards. Mary, of course, is never where you think she is.

Unfortunately, Commander is a singleton format, and there are a limited number of Killbot cards printed. We thus lean on changelings and Conspiracy to fill the gap.

Most Curious Voltron

Mary makes for a curious voltron commander. If she swaps with a creature that has +1/+1 counters, she has those counters. If she swaps with a creature that was given first strike until end of turn, she has first strike. And so on.

Instead of loading Mary up with auras or equipment, we can swap her with killbots:

  • Cairn Wanderer can gain evasion abilities, attack unblocked, and then switch into Mary. It's like she's a ninja!
  • Changeling Berserker can attack, and then we switch in Mary who is already attacking.
  • Fire-Belly Changeling can give itself +2/+0, and then switch to Mary who's now a 7/5, a 3-turn clock.
  • Ghostly Changeling can give itself +X/+X (given enough mana), and then switch to Mary to go from a base 2/2 to a base 5/5.
  • Moonglove Changeling can give itself deathtouch, inheritable by Mary.
  • Skeletal Changeling can give itself regeneration shields, inheritable by Mary. (Mary can also just switch out to the Skeletal Changeling and let it actually regenerate itself.)
  • Taurean Mauler can accumulate +1/+1 counters for Mary to hold.
  • War-Spike Changeling can give itself first strike for Mary.

For Cairn Wanderer specifically, we have a package of creatures intended to be used:

This potentially gives Cairn Wanderer flying, trample, fear, protection from all colors, protection from instants, haste, double strike, deathtouch, lifelink, vigilance. (And first strike, but that's redundant with double strike.)

Recursion Options

Because Conspiracy is so nice for this deck (cheating non-changelings in and out of play with Mary), we want to be able to get it back if it's destroyed. Unfortunately, BR isn't especially good at recurring enchantments. Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed and Shrouded Lore fill that role, and both can pull double-duty, recurring almost anything.

Because we're likely to dump something scary like Akroma, Emrakul, or Dragon Tyrant in the graveyard with the likes of Buried Alive or Entomb, Animate Dead and Necromancy are useful. Phyrexian Reclamation lets us put dead Killbots back in our hand to continue (or expand) our N-Card Monte game.

Flavor Picks

Jalum Grifter has us play an actual game of Three-Card Monte, so it seems a slam-dunk for a deck based on the concept. Kill! Destroy! seems very thematic for a deck full of Killbots.

Updates Add

Got my changelings and Conspiracy altered by Blackwing Alters, in addition to Mary and the Killbots. Now all the Killbot-related cards are Portal Turrets of some variety. :)

  • Mary O'Kill: Still herself, but her disguise matches the new look of her Killbots
  • Curious Killbot, Delighted Killbot, Despondent Killbot, Enraged Killbot: Bog-standard Portal Turrets
  • Cairn Wanderer: A standard Turret next to a gravestone marked "Test Subject #234" (appears on a clipboard in the first room of Portal 1; Portal 2: Lab Rat confirms that this is not Chell)
  • Changeling Berserker: A Frankenturret
  • Fire-Belly Changeling: A Rocket Turret
  • Ghostly Changeling: A standard Turret dressed as a ghost
  • Moonglove Changeling: A standard Turret sitting in a pool of Toxic Water
  • Skeletal Changeling: A Defective Turret
  • Taurean Mauler: The Animal King Turret
  • War-Spike Changeling: A standard Turret, with its guns replaced with spikes and sitting at the end of a trail of Propulsion Gel
  • Conspiracy: Full art of the Turret Opera
