This deck is relatively straightforward.
- Step 1: Get to 6 mana (3 needs to be American)
- Step 2: Summon Narset
- Step 3: Swing
- Step 4: ???
- Step 5: Profit!
She doesn't always go off, but when she does, she drinks Dos Equis -- er I mean, she gets there.
Expect salt if you run this list.
It's ALWAYS Your Turn!
There is a reason why I dubbed her Master of Combat and Time... Let's have a look.
Temporal Manipulation
,
Walk the Aeons
,
Beacon of Tomorrows
,
Temporal Trespass
,
Expropriate
,
Time Warp
,
Temporal Mastery
,
Part the Waterveil
,
Time Stretch
,
Karn's Temporal Sundering
,
Nexus of Fate
Since Narset triggers when she attacks, these spells increase the likelihood of casting a free extra turn effect.
Seize the Day
,
Fury of the Horde
,
Waves of Aggression
,
Relentless Assault
,
Aggravated Assault
,
Savage Beating
With
Proteus Staff
, if you control Narset, use it on her... Since she's the only creature in the list and the Staff's resolution allows you to put other revealed cards (the rest of your entire library, lol) on the bottom of your library in any order, you get your Narset back AND you get to stack your library to maximize her effectiveness, presumably stacking it all for a win. Alternative, if you have a 1/1, use it on that. You wont find anything but you can still stack your library and keep Narset on the battlefield.
Using
Strionic Resonator
, you can copy her "when she attacks" trigger at least once per each of your turns. Double trigger for one attack... Wonderful!
Equipment Shenanigans
Even though people generally view
Grappling Hook
as a weak card, I think it's great in a Voltron list for extra board control! Especially when you're running with the enhancements I chose. It grants Double Strike, which isn't too big of a boost from First Strike, but that triggered ability is why I put value in it. You may choose to make a creature to block Narset, if able??? Okay! Here are some fun synergies.
Grappling Hook + Sword of Kaldra
: Narset having First Strike makes the Double Strike from the Grappling Hook useless in this case. However,
Sword of Kaldra
lets you exile a creature before regular damage can be dealt (while First Strike damage is being dealt!).
Godsend + Grappling Hook + Loxodon Warhammer
: This is a beefed up version of the first combination.
Godsend
and
Sword of Kaldra
are functionally similar in result, but achieve it differently. The Sword requires Narset to actually deal damage in order to exile the damaged creature. Godsend is entirely different in that it triggers when Narset blocks or becomes blocked. So Narset doesn't even have to deal combat damage to exile a creature. This is where
Loxodon Warhammer
comes in. If Godsend exiles a creature before damage is dealt, Narset is still considered blocked and Trample from the Warhammer will apply all of Narset's damage to the defending player (if they assigned no other blockers) - Double Strike damage included (Grappling Hook, remember!). This combo with Loxodon Warhammer does still work using Sword of Kaldra, but in that case you'd lose out of potential damage dealt to the defending player in that Narset will still have to do lethal to the blocking creature before the Sword triggers.
Celestial Mantle + Grappling Hook
: Well... With Double Strike,
Celestial Mantle
will trigger twice... Quadruple your life total!
FAQ
- Q: I noticed that
Narset, Enlightened Master
has Hexproof. Isn't that unfun?
- A: Yes, it is. But Narset is 6 CMC and is only a 3/2 with First Strike. As a commander, she shines as a driving force for my creatureless list. She is the engine. I deserve a little slack, don't you think? (lol, no I don't)
- Q: Why do you run
Nahiri, the Lithomancer
,
Elspeth, Sun's Champion
, and
Assemble the Legion
?
- A: A non-creature deck still has to have creatures somehow in this format of EDH; wouldn't you agree? Too many times I've been asked to sacrifice a creature and Narset is my only creature, or gotten hit with a lethal blow by a big, but easily chumpable, creature and Narset is tapped. Having 1/1s to rely on when Narset is tapped or to throw away to sacrifice effects really helped the deck's survive-ability. The original build didn't have these things and I'd say the win rate has gone up since. Besides, Elpeth has a nice Wrath effect to have coupled with token generation and Nahiri synergizes with my equipment as well as making her own equipment to throw onto Narset for a free to equip +5/+5 power boost in addition to making her own 1/1s.
- Q:
Runechanter's Pike
... What gives?
- A: I'll prompt you to look at the list again and total the amount of instants and sorceries I run. How could I pass up a potential +33/+0 on Narset? This Pike has given Narset many one shot kills on victims with 40+ life and zero points of commander damage from her.
- Q: Okay, I know why you added
Basilisk Collar
to the list.
- A: That's not even a question! ...But yes, I am a horrible person who regularly refers to First Strike + Deathtouch as "Bad Touch".
