Is Earthcraft better than Cryptolith Rite?

I'd still rather have Llanowar Wastes than, say, Woodland Cemetery (or just a basic) here. The painlands are just too good to ignore, IMO.

PS: I may have asked this before, but why no Oppression here? It's backbreaking in most matchups against equal-power decks.

Hey what are your thoughts on Asylum Visitor for Nath? I run it in mine and have had huge success with it so far. It comes out early to block and trade with Najeela, can be played if hit by something like Necrogen Mists or Bottomless Pit, and is a powerhouse once the game is slowed down. I've had games where I draw 12+ cards on from her (although my meta is far from cedh).

I'm wondering if the clause of drawing makes her too slow, but lmk what you think!

How do handle running STAX pieces which disable some of your own cards? For example, Grafdiggers disables Green Sun and Chord. Cursed Totem disables your own dorks and Scavenging Ooze. How do you work with that?

Thanks for stopping by Polybius. It took me a while to get the focus again on this deck. I have been playing it lots of times lately, but I never really aimed for any changes. So I left the deckpage unnoticed for a while.

Pox and Death Cloud can both deliver devastating blows, but timing is indeed essential. But these effects are just so damn rewarding for a Nath deck, that it is too good to be left out. But I know the feeling when it can go wrong. I've had lots of success with them, compared to the several times they backfired.

The reason I run Earthcraft over Cryptolith Rite is due to the fact that it's a key part of one of the game winning combo's ToolmasterOfBrainerd.

Squirrel Nest & Earthcraft making an infinite amount of squirrel tokens, who can swing for lethal damage to all your opponents. Put the Nest on a BASIC land and tap the land for your first squirrel token. Then activate Earthcraft 's ability by tapping the squirrel token to untap the basic land which has been enchanted by the Nest. Keep repeating this process for infinite tokens which can swing for lethal during your next turn. Make sure to do this during your opponents turn, otherwise your tokens are still affected by summoning sickness.

Thanks for checking out my deck!

Thanks for stopping by Daedalus19876. How are you doing lately? Storming the top votes of the EDH tables I see. Good job sir!

The reason I chose not to run Oppression is mainly motivated by the fact the it says 'players'. In most games I tend open aggressive and will be left with only 1/2 cards for the mid/endgame. Discarding one of those cards is something that also is backbreaking for me. I even cut his counterpart, because I felt the effect was underwhelming for the cmc.

Llanowar Wastes should definitely have a spot in the deck, so it's in! Thanks for letting me know :)

Ravenous Slime is now also in the deck. Curious how this card will work out. There are so mnay graveyard shenanigans these days, that such a card might criple decks like Meren more than I already had the options for.

Looking forward to welcome him on the battlefield.

Thanks you for your thoughful comment Merlikthemad. Basically you answered the question yourself. It is a very interesting card, but it is too slow for cEDH. Usually games end no later than turn 5/6. I am active in a competitive meta, so there is no added value for running this card.

However, like you said, if games run longer and your meta is not very competitive, then I think it could be a really interesting card to consider. But for cEDH purposes, it won't add anything valuable to your deck.

Thanks for your imput! Appreciated. And sorry for the looong wait to reply. I was very distracted....

A very valid question nmckay3. These STAX pieces are REALLY annoying for the whole board, inclusing yourself. However, you have the control over them; choosing when to cast them. I run lots of ramp pieces, which should grant me a consistent headstart over the other players. Basically you outpace them, play your key pieces and lock down the board for all players. Meaning that it will become alot harder for opponents to break them, while you have the advantage already and you can start discarding their hands and chipping down life totals with your tokens.

The lock is harder on them, than for yourself. If you can't manage to set this up properly, then you either had a bad starting hand you had to mulligan or just an unfortunate counter along the way....

I hope this makes sense :) Thanks for your thoughts!

Hey just saw that you're running Ravenous Slime for the grave hate and was wondering if Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet wouldn't be a better card? Similar grave hate effect, but Kalitas just overall seems better. I know it's more expensive though, but otherwise I can't see the downside.

Unfortunately, that's exactly the downside. Costs more, harder to cast, and can't GSZ for it. That makes Slime extremely preferable.

Got it. I didn’t know if it was that simple or something more elaborate. Thanks for the reply.

What do you think of the new Cabal Therapist ? It seems to synergise perfectly with this sort of deck.

That is nice to see Patolea. Having fun with it? The newer sets finally gave us some new toys to play with.

It is an interesting card Dankey. But the downside is that it won't trigger until it is your next turn. Early game I see some potential, but lategame it does not have real impact anymore. Earlygame you also lack the tokens to sac, since it is vital to have Nath on the board first. And saccing Cabal itself is wasting his value. I am not convinced about this card for this deck... Thanks for your suggestion nevertheless! I like to talk about cards like these...

A great list, but I'm particularly interested in your rationale for each card and general strategy for the deck. Do you plan on writing the "Primer" for this deck, or will this primarily be just the place to check your updated list? Thanks!

PartyJ says... #17

There is a primer up and running, can't you see it cslewis420?

Why no Anvil of Bogardan to hard lock with Chains of Memphis? By itself it forces discard triggers.

Also wanted to chime in and say I can't see the full primer, just the category headers. I remember they were expandable before, but it's not the case anymore. I tried on Firefox, Chrome, and Edge and it's consistent across all of them.

PartyJ

I liked your list, and am considering to use it as inspiration for my own Nath.

I was wondering something though: is it inevitable to end up with a strong list if I attempt Stax, or can I "casualize" it, and will it create a mild STAX list with no clear wincon?

After all, weak STAX with no strong wincon is even more boring for the table.

imSandstorm says... #23

I want to give this list a shot but don't have and cannot currently obtain a Nether Void , Chains of Mephistopheles , and The Abyss . Barring proxies, do you have recommendations for budget-friendly alternatives? Are Possessed Portal , Pox , and Painful Quandary decent replacements?

Dear followers, friends and members of T/O,

I finally found the time to rewrite the primer so that it is actually visible again for everybody.

Let me know of you still face difficulties reading the complete primer cslewis420, Dankey, imSandstorm, Bookswinters, SirChris39 and Wedjat.

The new primer can be found in the decks description.
