Naya Channel Fireball

Casual Casual RGW (Naya)

Teele

Being single, childless, and having a good job means that I have a decent amount of disposable income. I also have a problem with cardboard crack. Thus, it ends up that I end up buying far more Magic than my friends. This means my rares binder is fatter, and I have ended up with around a dozen really good decks in our metagame. The logical conclusion of all this is that I win a lot.

However, winning and being good at Magic are not necessarily the same thing. Thus, I want to try and test my abilities by going back to building decks that include only commons and uncommons (as a small tangent, I'm shocked that this isn't a thing yet; pauper's a thing, 'heirloom' is a thing, 'peasant' Magic is a thing, but this seems such a simple and accessible format that it's beyond me why someone hasn't done anything with it). This limits the upper bound on raw power level a bit, and I'd like to see if I can make decks with these constraints that still win consistently.

I was going to build a U/R control deck, because I'm a loyal servant of Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and his esteemed guild. Then I saw the card Infernal Plunge, and I went, "Wait a minute...how about a channel-fireball deck?" I went to work, looking for stuff that could build me up to ridiculous amounts of mana. Axebane Guardian needed to be a thing. I splashed for Pride Guardian because he's soooo cheap and since I need to stall for the first few turns, his life gain on block seemed like a logical choice. Wall of Fire is big and it has firebreathing, and it's not something people are going to want to attack into. Some mana dorks went in, I wanted Avacyn's Pilgrim in place of the Llanowar Elves, but all of mine were in another deck, sadly.

The tokens from Krenko's Command are designed to be thrown into the lava pit (see that dude in the art for Infernal Plunge? Don't be fooled, he's a goblin), or just be thrown at other people with Goblin Grenade. In the unlikely event that any of them survive this, they help make Battle Hymn a thing that could potentially work well. Satyr Hedonist gives me a little boost when I need it, and he's one of the only things in here that actually wants to attack now and then.

Fireball and Volcanic Geyser are the finishers. If all goes well, I won't have to waste these spells clearing the board, I'll just load them up with a massive X and go directly to the face.

I feel like this is actually going to be one of the more fun decks I've made. Just love doing unexpected things with Magic cards, especially on a budget.

So, the original list was very very slow. It ends up taking a very long time to build enough mana up to cast a massive Fireball. Plus, the token strategy was a bit clunky, especially when I played a game where both copies of Goblin Grenade pretty much ended up being a dead draw. Moreover, with all the Defenders in the deck, the later part of the game became an exercise in 'draw-go' while I waited for enough mana or a reason to cast one of the X spells.

Thus were the goblins removed, and a Plan B which I call 'undying beatdown' was added. Young Wolf and Strangleroot Geist were added. They conveniently come back when sacrificed to Infernal Plunge and they allow an aggressive plan for the early game while I quietly build up my Defenders and mana abilities. The undying dudes are easy to swing with en masse because I really don't mind if they come back bigger (especially the geists, which have haste).

The early plan for these guys has shifted the importance of green mana early game, so I've evened out the lands.
