My Local Game Store has started doing Frontier Fridays this month, so I pulled out a Naya Dragons list I used before the Tarkir block rotated out and updated it for Frontier. I've been very pleased with the results so far.
Between the two Fridays I've only lost one match, and I went undefeated at the latest event. Notable wins have been against Ensoul Artifact, Mardu Dragons, mono red aggro and Grixis Zombies (mostly the current standard version with fetch lands). The incidental enchantment and artifact removal between Nahiri and Dromoka's Command have proven very helpful in various matchups and make those cards stand out beyond their primary uses. Tireless Tracker is another standout as it works so well with the fetch lands, and it provides a lot of pressure if I'm able to stack up the clues. Thalia ends up being an easy removal target, but that's also part of her purpose. If she sticks, she's very good against aggro, Collected Company, vehicle crews, and even fetch lands. The Dragons, Sarkhan and Chandra provide the mid and late game pressure. Sarkhan has definitely been pulling his weight with the hasty damage or extra removal when needed. The extra burn from Thunderbreak Regent and Draconic Roar have given me a few wins outside of combat, too.
My one loss was to a Collected Company deck, and even that was due to a play mistake on my part. I was attacking for lethal with Sarkhan, and my opponent CCed into a Reflector Mage on my attack step. On my opponent's next turn he tapped out with no flying blockers. We both forgot that I could replay Sarkhan again on my turn and swing for lethal again. That would have won me game 2 and taken us to game 3 with potentially a different match outcome.
After the last two Fridays I've made a couple of changes from the initial list. I've swapped the original second Atarka for a second Dromoka. Atarka ends up sitting in my hand most of the time if I draw it, and I have not yet lived the Nahiri -> Atarka dream. However, when I've had Dromoka I've always been happy to play it. From the sideboard I cut Dragonmaster Outcast for the 4th Dromoka's Command. The various removal choices come in against different matches where it lines up better than the mainboard removal. I usually cut the high end pressure cards for more removal against aggressive decks to take a bit more of a controlling role. Hallowed Moonlight + Hushwing are for Collected Company matchups. I didn't have Hushwing in the board when I lost my CC match, either, so I'm hoping I've improved against that deck. Hallowed Moonlight is also good against zombies.
I like that this deck isn't just a revival of a popular previous standard deck. It has proven to do well against decks of that type, too. The format has been fun and fresh so far.
