I have an article you might want to read.
The first order of business should be to pick one major focus for your deck. While you can include subthemes, every card in your deck should tie back to the overarching idea. In this case, you have two diametrically opposed concepts that fight each other for deck space rather than share it together.
You should also consider that EDH is an inherently slow format compared to Standard or any other kind of 60-card gametype. You'll have time to ramp and play more expensive cards, so take advantage of that. Don't worry about the smaller cards; those should be used as support for the core of your deck.
What kind of budget are you working with, and what would you like the focus of the deck to be?

i am basically trying to build with what i have on hand which right now is a good amount of standard cards and my collection of rares from the mirrodin/phyrexia block as well as a handful of older cards. my budget for this is REALLY CHEAP since i currently have no one to play against so i am building to get my friends interested in the format. we all play casual standard and FNM. I guess my focus should be Mayael. the deck i built around her was solid at 60 cards i just want to try something different

You need, like, 10 more lands. This deck should be running closer to 40 lands.
Running 40 lands in EDH is the equivalent of running 24 in a Standard deck. But if you're only running 28 in EDH, that's less than 17 in a Standard deck. And with spells this big and mana requirements so drastic, that simply will not do.
Epochalyptik, I'm sure, could elaborate a lot more on this for you.

Thanks Zandl, yeah I realize I need more land. I was just up so late that I didn't get to that point in the Editting process before I finally had to pass out. Keep an eye on what I do though and let me know if you see anything else. I love this site! Everyone is so friendly and helpful :-)

I have a Mayael EDH deck that I have been playing for a bit and I agree with what Epochalyptik said. I'll break down the different parts by category.
WARNING: I did not take budget into account with these suggestions but they might be nice to have once your playgroup gets more involved with EDH or you decide to invest more in the deck.
Creatures: The main focus of a Mayael deck is to get her out and start to hammer out a fatty every turn. But because of her ability, you are paying 6 for each one. Because of this, you want them to do as much for the cost as possible. Cards like Khalni Hydra , Vorstclaw and Woolly Thoctar end up being vanilla fatties and in the case of the thoctar, you're paying more for it than it actually costs. Fatties like Tyrant of Discord and Moldgraf Monstrosity are more along the lines of what you want and I would definitely keep them both in. I wouldn't worry TOO much about the curve of your deck as most of the time, you will be pulling fatties out with Mayael and not hardcasting them. Fatties with examples of good functions are Scourge of Kher Ridges , Crater Hellion or Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger .
I personally try to shy away from mana-dorks and use artifacts like card:Journeyer's Kite and Boros Signet but that is because my playgroup uses a lot of board wipes and spot removal. Ultimately it is your choice of which to use but Bloom Tender is a must. Try to fit 8-10 mana ramp cards into your deck.
Protection: Mayael is a huge lightning rod when she hits the battlefield so one of you top priorities is to protect her. She is relatively cheap but if she can't stay on the board the your tempo will be seriously slowed down. Some great cards to keep her on the field are Asceticism , both the boots, Avacyn, Angel of Hope . card:Green Sun's Zenith lets you pull her back out if she gets shuffled into your library. If you can keep her out, more often then not you will win after a few fatties hit the field.
Cheats: If Mayael is removed, its great to have another way to get your fatties onto the field. Lurking Predators , Defense of the Heart , and Quicksilver Amulet are all great cards to cheat fatties out with.
Those are the main points though I could go into a few more. An article that helped me a TON in building my deck was This article on mtg salvation

Crystallization and Jund Hackblade aren't legal for use in this deck.
You're kind of defeating the purpose of Mayael the Anima by running so few creatures with power 5+. The focus on Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer hurts you to the point where you'd be better off just building two separate decks.
Generally speaking, you shouldn't include creatures just because they're creatures. You have a lot of weak creatures that don't do much for you in the way of either combat or utility. To get the best performance from your deck, you should be using the creatures as additional utility. Choose them based on what they offer outside of combat, and consider that a 40-life start makes cards like Memnite and Ornithopter pretty useless.
