Hey reawkwian, Progenitus is a nice hydra, but I just worry about casting it. I picked Naya colors, so I am missing black and blue. I would have to have either four Fertile Ground or four Birds of Paradise , or some combination thereof. I don't know if that is worth putting one a Progenitus into the deck. Which is a shame, cause I really like that hydra.

Another reason is because I don't own one, its an expensive card.

I decided I wanted to make a hydra deck too, just for a fun, thematic deck for casual play with my friends. a search online led me to this. You've given me some great ideas, thank you!
One card I always tend to want in a green deck in Rancor . Your hydras will be strong, no doubt, but you might not outmatch the pace your opponents can lay out creatures, considering the high cost of most hydras(to be effective at least), and your strategy of making the few creatures you will have into behemoths. Trample can smash your opponents plans of stall blocking and let those hydras unleash their full potential (besides primordial of course).

Also, splashing a 4th color may seem extreme, but your Birds of Paradise , Zhur-Taa Ancient , Fertile Ground and Mirari's Wake lets you splash for whatever the hell you want.
Therefore, what do you think of Corpsejack Menace ? I can't help but bring him to mind when thinking of counter building decks. I made a deck Corpsejack it up that was a counter deck that included him.

I'm sorry for the multitude of comments I just keep thinking of things like right after i post lol.
Check out Bioshift !! I am putting that one into my hydra deck. Ah see the potential there? :) You can win SOOO fast and your opponent wont know what the f*** hit em when you combo with Mayael's Aria for the win! Kay thats my 1000 cents on your deck. Good luck man!

@rhelme92: Hahaha, I am glad another person is making a hydra deck! Lets look at the foundation of deck:
Hydras: 12 hydras in total, at 3 a piece. Savageborn Hydra , Protean Hydra , Primordial Hydra , Apocalypse Hydra . I like to keep things even, but half of your creatures are hydras. Its hard to not want to put more good hydras in there. So I don't mess with this part to often.
Creature mana ramp: 8 creatures, Birds of Paradise , and Sakura-Tribe Elder .
From the creature side of things, I am running 12 hydras and and 8 mana dorks. These leaves two slots open for what ever you feel is worth it in a +1/+1 deck. I am thematic, so I stuck to naya colors. With all these new cards it is very hard not to resist putting in more colors. I promised myself I would stick to the original idea, no matter how tempting new ideas came out.
At 22 creatures, I have so far used up 20 of them. That leaves you 2 creature slots that you can adjust, with out changing the original idea of my deck. I like Vigor to much to get rid of him, he is a +1/+1 counter god. I could take out Zhur-Taa Ancient , but I just added him in. So I have to see his play value first.
As you build your deck, you can think about these numbers to help decide if you can fit Corpsejack Menace . The way I built the mana ramp, adding one more color should not be an issue. I put in a Doubling Season , so that acts like a Corpsejack Menace for me.
Now lets handle the other side of things. Out of the way I built the deck, I can have potentially 3 slots open, if I drop one Death's Presence ..which I should. So I could add in a Bioshift now. I think that is an ingenious idea, I am so glad you pointed that out.
So thats the room I have to play with...I should really write a new description. Hope that helps clarify some ideas about my deck.

you should probably add in the new hydra in m14. its much better than Primordial Hydra

Noooooo, I just deleted all the good comments!!! Damn it.
June 15, 2013 11:18 a.m.
@tempest I have no idea what you just posted cause I am an idiot. So if you could re-comment please.
June 15, 2013 11:20 a.m.
Oh wait never mind, they went under the updates, so thats how that works. I learned something new.
@Tempest: I want to add the new hydra into the deck, but do you really like more than the Primordial Hydra ? I guess I don't have to shift the counters over onto another creature with Bioshift , so that makes sense. But you lose out on the doubling of counters.
I hate how there is so many good hydras and no room for them all ....

well, i think its in the same league. each hydra each contributes something different, so... maybe try 2 each?
June 15, 2013 5:52 p.m.
Fair point, maybe there is another hydra that can add to the mix. Thanks for the suggestions. I will go and look at some more hydras, right now I think I good a really good mix. I have to say the hydras improved from where this first started.

Ya, thats what I did before I made the deck. The only guy I might consider to play is Feral Hydra , it is one of the few hydras that can keep putting +1/+1 counters on it. But the 3 cmc for its ability is kind of high, I mean its only 1 more than that of the Savageborn Hydra but still.
I could use those two spots to fill some fun hydras, like Phytohydra , Sprouting Phytohydra , Progenitus ... They don't really help with the objective as well as the ones I already have in the deck, but they are fun to play.

I almost always play mulitplayer, sometimes on rare occasions I play 1v1.

For me its a personal play style, I generally try to win with the enchantment. The Hydra Omnivore does nothing much in terms of first win condition. I would have to find ways to put +1/+1 counters on it. I had one in my mono-green hydra deck, with a Whispersilk Cloak . I just don't feel like it will do anything in terms of the theme I have going in this deck. Great card, but its like the rest of the hydras I that I don't put in here. I don't think it fits, I am very thematic (which does not always help me).
I wish I could build mono-green hydra deck, but I tried and failed. I ended up just disbanding the deck. In fact looking at your decks, I would love to see you build a mono green hydra deck for a tribe. Maybe you can pull it off where I could not.

challenge accepted. working on the deck right now lol =]
June 16, 2013 12:30 a.m.
If you pull this off, I will be impressed and happy at the same time. Lot of people build mono green elf decks, saproling deck, beast decks....etc. I have yet to see a hydra tribe deck that is viable. I really wanted a mono-green +1/+1 counter deck to be honest.

i've made it and you should be able to see it. take a look?
June 16, 2013 10:59 a.m.
Hahaha, ya I just took a look at your deck. Definitely an interesting approach.
obitus says... #1
Thanks, ya with the new set out I might add some cards to my sideboard. It plays pretty nicely, its one of those decks that you have to keep in control or it will win. I love anything with +1/+1 counters, I figure hydras are a way to go. Let me know when you finish your deck so I can check it out.
