Well when I built the deck, it was geared towards Mayael's Aria . I never really went back to thinking about Sprouting Phytohydra afterwards. There is a couple of combos in that article that I like, but now I run into the same problem. How do I make room for it in this deck.

ever thought of adding Somberwald Sage? I use them in my red/grn dragon/hydra deck and they definitely get those hydras out with a few more counters

@hawk368:No, I never really did.
Right now my current ramp is old, just Birds of Paradise and Sakura-Tribe Elder . I could look into upgrading it. Thanks for the suggestion. There is also Rosheen Meanderer , I am really thinking about that one. I could take out Vigor and Zhur-Taa Ancient for now and test it that way.

Hey obitus, I didnt realize that you were the one with the other hydra deck until just now. Here you are commenting on my hydra deck and little did I know it was your deck I was borrowing the ideas from for mine lol. I could throw you out my suggestions, but obviously you could just look at my deck lol.

@rhelme92Don't worry, yesterday I looked at so many hydra decks I could not tell whose I was commenting on. A lot of people just borrowed the basic stuff from my deck, but few of them took it anywhere. I like how you actually changed it up and gave it a different style.
I got a few ideas about changing up my mana ramp, its a little old school. I might be nice to try out different ones people have suggested. I don't want to make to many changes to fast, or I won't learn anything.
On that note, the idea for Canopy Cover came from my original +1/+1 deck. Someone left the comment, but I never got around to trying it out. So I just passed it onto you....then I realized to myself "you know I should follow that same advice given to me".
Over the years I learned to slow down on deck ideas and focus making the already existing ones better. Hence, I have been working on my hydras lately.

I like that strategy. Take it slow and learn the ins and outs before attempting to make too many changes.
I just ordered the cards for my hydra deck, Im satisfied with where it is at right now, it looks pretty solid, ive gotten good advice on it. Im excited to play it outside of playtesting and see how it holds up against my buddies' burn decks and populate deck, etc. I'll give it a good run and see what changes i can make to adapt to my friends decks.

@rhelme92: The main problem you will most likely run into is the fact that your hydras will attract a lot of aggro. In the beginning people will not be so cautious, but as they learn your main strategy, they will be quick to burn your creatures.
Thats an issue I ran into a lot, or they will start trying to kill your mana ramp. The first few times you win with Mayael's Aria I am sure your meta group will be surprised. I would not expect them to underestimate your deck more than a few times.
The one thing you have going for you that I did not, is that you can potentially take out one player with the Mage Slayer . I never thought about that card, it was a nice touch. Also the Bioshift is an excellent idea, way to save those hard earned counters. Mayael's Aria does not care who has a power of 20 or greater as long as one of them do. The funny thing is most of the players will look to your hydras for the power 20 or greater, when you don't even need a hydra to win. You could win with your mana dorks, they need less than 20 counters.
I hope it works out for you, let me know how it goes.

just curious if you considered chameleon colossus had him in my hydra deck before i started breaking it down
June 20, 2013 9:03 a.m.
@Maverick30: Can't say I have thought about that card, I suppose you can get 6 counters on, then before your upkeep pop his ability to win with Mayael's Aria . Not bad idea. If a slot opens up, I might try that out. Plus I need to find a copy too, thanks for the input.

remembered this deck after pulling two of the biggest badasses from the m14 pre-release, you'll have to get your hands on the Khalonian Hydra, while he's not an X drop like most hydras, he comes out as a 4/4, any time he attacks (declared as attacking) he doubles the +1/+1 counters of EACH creature you control, so him and all the other hydras on the board... not to mention he would quadruple Primordial Hydra but with your doubling seasons, would quadruple hydras and octuple (is that a word?) the Primordial counters. as far as subtitutions I think the Proteans wouldn't kill you to replace, it could mess with the mana curve, but why would you drop a Protean for less than a 3/3 anyway? dem sombers will get this guy out in a flash anyway :P

just thought of another suggestion Asceticism might really help against kill spells, not much it can do against board wipes, but at least you won't lose a primordial to something dumb like a Cloudshift

Thanks hawk368, I wish I had a Khaloninan hydra. I thought they would be cheap or at least under 10 dollars, who runs hydras? Apparently the card is estimated around 23 plus some dollars.
I could get lucky and pulll one, that would be the day. I already plan on getting those new modular hydras that are coming out. I figure I am going to put 2 of each hydra into the deck, that way I get a variety. This is for causal fun after all.

A Few things: I would take out Frog tongue for Spider Umbra . Gives you the reach you are looking for with the added bonuses of +1/+1 and totem armor.
I'm curious how Bioshift has worked for you. I am considering it for my own hydra deck because it can substitute Vastwood Hydra which in my experience has proved to be inefficient.
I would sub a couple creatures for a couple Kalonian Hydra . It goes great with doubling season. so it comes out as an 8/8 and it attacks as a 16/16.
September 10, 2013 9:36 a.m.
I used Frog Tongue more for the card draw and reach then I did for the +1/+1 counter, I also explained Bioshift on your deck page.
I like Vastwood Hydra , but I strictly wanted to keep all hydras that have potential to grow.
Kalonian Hydra is great, I just don't own any. I will wait for the card to become cheap before I consider adding it.

Worldly Tutor I have played this card in my big creature/hydra deck. it works really well to either get a mana ramper or if you have enough mana one of your bigger creatures. Bathe in Light is also a quick save if you don't have a creature protector. maybe add another Vigor so they can save themselves and just have people be extremely annoyed at you. Shield of the Oversoul is another helper for flying. Forgotten Ancient and Bioshift are extremely smart! i would have never thought of those. a big game win to help you our could be Golgari Decoy or Taunting Elf

Hey iBrielle, thanks for the heads up on the suggestions. I will have to work them into my next set of ordered cards. The hard part right now is thinking about what to cut. The deck is almost reached its peak.
I can get to my win condition before turn 10, so I am happy with the speed. I used to use Bathe in Light , back in the early stages. I like the Taunting Elf idea, I started using him in my token deck. Definitely need to check out Shield of the Oversoul , this card almost makes me want to take out Doubling Season and try it out.
