Naya Midrange Werewolves

Modern

patbou

Modern Werewolves never made it to the competitive level, yet. The reason, IMHO, is that there are not enough playable Werewolves to justify going to 32-36 creatures for the sole purpose of Aether Vial and/or Collected Company, as if those cards could suddenly make non-competitive Werewolves worthy of a slot in the main deck.

This deck is thus a new take on the Werewolf tribe. Goal is Midrange, winning with card value. The only creatures who made the cut are those that generate such value, or that works toward that goal.

Main Engine

  • Mayor of Avabruck  : You'll want to flip this ASAP to generate Tokens (pseudo card advantage), and get the Wolf anthem effect (because Huntmaster and Partisan).
  • Immerwolf: Obviously an excellent lord. Still a bit of a nonbo with Huntmaster, but the lord effect is super important, because of...
  • Silverfur Partisan: Super card advantage with this one. It will create a 2/2 Wolf Token if opponent tries to remove it, or any other Wolf or Werewolf. We can also trigger this ability ourselves.
  • Huntmaster of the Fells  : Already a 2 for 1 when it comes into play, maybe a 3 for 1 if it kills a creature when it flips, and super value generator when you can rinse and repeat.
  • Ramp / Mana dorks

  • Atarka's Command: Late game, this is a super trick to grant +1/+1 to a very wide board. But main use of this spell is to ramp on turn 2 (+ Burn mode). Four mana on turn 3 gets us into the Midrange territory of casting two spells per turn (which flips back said Huntmaster, if done during the same turn, if that's what we want). T3 Huntmaster of the Fells   is a strong play, but also T3 Silverfur Partisan if it can be protected right away with Emerge Unscathed (8/8 on the battlefield), or T3 Mayor of Avabruck   on my turn + Moonmist during opponent's turn (soaking damage with Fog, take no damage while blocking to remove an attacker, and untap with Howlpack Alpha   on my next turn, ready to add a Wolf Token).
  • Duskwatch Recruiter  : Pure card advantage on dayside (or huge scry away 3 non-creature cards), and mana dork when flipped.
  • Scorned Villager  : A filler, really. But not a bad one. Accelerating to 4 mana on turn 3 is super good, and this card serves that purpose. Plus, more than 33% creatures density helps Recruiter's ability.
  • Super Tricks

  • Moonmist: One-way Fog + combat trick. Just amazing.
  • Emerge Unscathed: This is 4 for 1 with Silverfur Partisan (trigger #1 from removal, trigger #2 when protection spell saves Partisan and trigger #3 when Rebound on next turn). Even without Partisan, saving a key player is important. Werewolves can be a house of cards. Remove one and everything else falls apart. I preferred this over Blossoming Defense because color protection allows for otherwise impossible blocks or attacks.
  • Dromoka's Command: Another way to double trigger Silverfur Partisan. It also acts as a removal, a combat trick, or a counter-burn.
  • Mana sinks

  • Mutavault: Obviously a very strong manland when combined with some lord effects.
  • Gavony Township: Very useful when going wide. Remember that with 6 mana, this and Atarka's Command in your hand, you can add +2/+2 at instant speed to the team (attack or defense).
  • Kessig Wolf Run: That one I'm not so sure about, given that flipped Huntmaster and Silverfur Partisan already have Trample. Also, the deck is quite colored mana intensive, with Immerwolf, Huntmaster, and both Commands. Too many colorless lands can hurt us.
