The deck is cool the title fits but I think you may have to many creatures maybe drop down on some of the creatures and add some type of removal Domri Rade is nice with creatures along with the scry lands in the build. I have a gruul brew i have been working on for a while and I think i is pretty solid check it out and let me know what you think. Burning Trees Gets Me Hydra

It may help you out a bit also establishing a side board always helps as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, and the point with domri and scrying is brilliant. Never would have crossed my mind. I really appreciate the help

Looks a lot better I like the idea of running 4 Domri Rade and cutting one of the Ruric Thar, the Unbowed since he is legendary I considerer running him in my main but I think he is more of a side board card against like control match ups because if you can land one of those that's pretty much game. Sylvan Caryatid is also nice granting you rather red or green with hexproof as oppose to Zhur-Taa Druid which is a good card and all can just be hit with a Shock or Magma Jet . Also I would go with 4 Stormbreath Dragon as the card is really good especially with double strike and lastly I think you may want to bring in a couple of those mortars and drop down to like 30 creatures at most. +1 from me as the deck evolves I will be watching, good luck.
January 2, 2014 6:46 p.m.
2 mortars 4 domri rade 4 crushers and 2 unbowed 4 Burning-Tree Emissary in place of the satyrs and 2 mortars in the side board other things good for the side are 2 Ratchet Bomb and 2 Pithing Needle 2 Destructive Revelry along with 4 Mistcutter Hydra and the 2 mortars along with Scavenging Ooze and maybe some Skullcrack
January 2, 2014 11:37 p.m.
I think it is great as is. Only maybes I would consider would be Scavenging Ooze , Destructive Revelry , and Peak Eruption , but those can all be side board situational. You're bad matchup will be Esper Control. Even though you have one solid card for the matchup. Its getting it to stick that will be hard. They will save the counter magic for Ruric. And all the other removal and card draw will be difficult to keep up with. Pacing your creature casts might be the only way you survive that kind of match up.
+1

Wouldn't it make sense to just sideboard out miz for Savage summoning against that matchup? Then they'll at least have to take 6 to rid ruric
January 12, 2014 1:38 p.m.
I would drop Ruric Thar, the Unbowed to Sideboard and completely drop Wrecking Ogre cmc to bloodrush and play is too high he isn't that useful. I would add 4x Polukranos, World Eater and maybe 3x Armed / Dangerous . Gives you an easy way to wipe the small guys out and get an easy double strike through. Xenagos, The Reveler is always a decent option as well.

how has the deck been working out for you lately also do you run it at fnm and things like that just wondering.
January 13, 2014 4:58 p.m.
I'm still in the process of building so haven't used this in it's whole yet. Though, I'm currently running it with chaos imps as opposed to stormbreaths(mainly because of price), but am sort of leaning towards putting those instead anyways. Im also debating putting in savage summoning as opposed to mizz mortars, just because I see at turn 3 or four depending on how mana ramp goes, savage summoning imps on my opponents endstep, beefing him to 8/7 and then on my turn attack with wrecking ogre for 22 damage. Obviously much needs to work out in order for this to be effective, but I have many backups in the meantime.
January 14, 2014 9:02 p.m.
Alright, I'm gonna clear comments cause I went nuts just now. Its all on chaos imps and hellkite now. Same thing as I said before except now I have two playsets to look for. Savage them on opponents turn and swing for lethal with wrecking ogre on my turn and as both will have trample most damage will go through. As long as you wait for the right time as far as your opponents mana, this can work without much of a headache. Also, with the addition of xenagos, once again mana will be pooring out your ears very early on.

Why even run Burning-Tree if you're not going to run Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . This deck is too slow w/o it to be a competitive deck in standard. Should be running Stormbreath Dragon if you're running a flying beat down team, by the time Hellkite Tyrant does 6 damage Stormbreath Dragon would do 12 then mosterfy next turn.
January 15, 2014 1:36 p.m.
Actually now that I think more about it Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx wouldn't help since both the fatties are double red... The fastest you could hope to drop a fatty would be turn 4. In which case you may already be close to dead or a board wipe was played.
January 15, 2014 1:52 p.m.
I see what your saying and don't disagree. The only problem right now is cost so I will definitely replace Hellkite with Stormbreath in time. Thanks for suggestions

I'd sideboard those mizz's and throw in lightning strikes...but that's honestly not even a big deal, playtested it twice and both times got a stormbreath out turn 3....O_O...I just like lightning strike mainboarded over mizz's because of instant speed and u can hit their life if need be, just a thought! sweet deck tho
January 22, 2014 12:01 a.m.
Hey, thanks for the comment. I see what your saying and that doesn't seem like a bad idea. I'm gonna play this a little and depending on demand I'll throw one or the other to sideboard.
January 23, 2014 3:48 p.m.
You could sideboard in Pyxis of Pandemonium against U/W Control, putting it out on turn one and exiling the top cards of their library and then popping it so all permanents go onto the battlefield.
You get a huge load of creatures and they get more or less nothing.
January 27, 2014 12:15 p.m.
I think that's a great idea and have included it in sideboard now. Thanks for the suggestion!

I say try it out first at your local meta to see if it's a good addition.

Have you thought about how Born of the Gods will change your deck? Plan on adding Xenagos, God of Revels?
January 28, 2014 3:02 p.m.
Yea, that's mainly why Ruric Thar, the Unbowed is in there. He'll be switched out when BG comes out
January 29, 2014 12:33 a.m.
You say that this deck is meant to ramp out creatures, yet I see a distinct lack of Sylvan Caryatid s. Virtually all top tier Gruul decks run 12 mana dorks because those extra 4 really do make a massive difference in speed.
Apart from that, though, the deck doesn't really need the Wrecking Ogres as Xenagos, God of Revels does his job much better.
Armed // Dangerous, while fun, also isn't really necessary either. This slot would be much better utilized as more removal such as more Mortars or a rather popular choice in Flesh / Blood .
And finally, Phoenix might not be the best choice of a creature to use. Tribute may be a fun mechanic, but it is very much an impractical mechanic as it violates one of the cardinal rules of a good card: You shouldn't ever have to give your opponent a choice.

I do understand where your coming from, and you Have a lot of good points, I just decided to go a bit more unique and try something of my own. For the most part this is a turn 5 deck. You get one big guy out on turn three and by turn five you Wrecking Ogre for 14, 12, or 16. With Xenagod, I'll do a max of 10 damage which is dramatically less. Phoenix is in there for evasion and has good potential to be a 5-5, which translates to 16 damage evasion easy on turn five. The heavy need for two reds explain the Hedonist over caryatid. So I'm not disagreeing that maybe this deck could be better with some changes, but I'd rather see a surprised look of someone who lost to a Wrecking Ogre, than the casual shrug that I beat him like the 5 other gruul decks that did the same thing games before. Thank you for suggestions though, I may still put in bloods over the armed
