So this wednesday I played at my former local venue, where they do the FNM´s in the middle of the week. I just returned to the city from abroad with all my stuff packed in a suitcase together with my deck. Was feeling very tired, but decided I would give it a shot. Turns out it was a good decision.
Match 1: vs GW Tokens
This was a match against an experienced player that plays competitive magic much more than I do. In game one I got luckier, he kept a sketchy 6 and I managed to get faster on board and kill him with my creatures. Game 2 we were pretty equal, I even managed to get him down to like 4 life, but then he played a Secure the Wastes end step, got a second Gideon Emblem next turn and swung past my blockers for exactly 12 damage, which was my life total. Game 3 was grindy as hell, he managed to built himself a very impressive board with Avacyn, Advocate and Pacifist, I had like 6 Thopters and a Pacifist. On one of my turns I decided to go risky, got a Gideon Emblem and attacked with all of my creatures. He took 10 damage because he couldn´t block enough Thopters, but unfortunately his Avacyn flipped (which was actually a big mistake by me). Next upkeep he got rid of my board and attacked. I was still alive and fortunately have been saving a Tragic Arrogance from the beginning of the game. I cleared his board, left him with a small Hangarback and won in the next two turns. Awesome games though!
Match 2: vs Mardu Control
I was quiet afraid before this match because I really don´t like playing against control strategies, especially those with like 4 Languishes and 4 copies of Radiant Flames in the sideboard. Game 1 he cleared my board 2 times with Languish and played a Sorin. I played a Secure the Wastes for 5, took down his Gideon and fortunately he didn´t have enough removal to kill my Warriors and I won. Game 2 I had a great hand, pressured him all the time with new and new planeswalkers which he had to find answers for. The crucial part was when I exiled his Kalitas with my Declaration in Stone and after that played an Avacyn, which has won me the game in the next two turns. I was very happy to win this match and excited for the finals against the second undefeated player.
Match 3: vs Bant Company
This guy has been playing a weird Bant Company with Pacifist and Void Grafter, so it was not really the classic build nor the Humans one. However the player was skilled and I mean, Reflector Mages and Bounding Krasises are still pain in the butt for my deck. Game one I was quicker though, had some great action with Dromoka´s Command and won with my Avacyn. Game 2 got grindier, he had many Negates and Declarations in Stone. Fortunately, Tragic Arrogance is a beast of a card in these matchups and I cleared his board, played Avacyn and won on the next turn.
So I went 3-0, won a booster and won an Eternal Masters booster that I will get when the set will be release, which is quite the price I think. This is the first tournament I won and although it was smaller than the usual one I play, the players were really good and it was more about quality than quantity here.
As for the deck I am very happy with how it performs. The on thing I am considering is removing the Silverfur Partisan for good in favour of a fourth Avacyn and a third Lambholt Pacifist, but I don´t really know. I mean, I like his combo with Dromoka´s Command and how control players dislike him, but I board him ALWAYS out after the 1st game, so I don´t know if he is worth keeping.
As for the sideboard, I am very happy with Tragic Arrogance (thinking about adding a third copy), Evolutionary Leap, Declaration in Stone, Hallowed Moonlight, Secure the Wastes.
I boarded Linvala many times, never drew her, but I know she is good so she is a keep certainly.
Den Protector didn´t do much, though I think he is very good in the mirror, but I am not sure if I keep two of them.
Clip Wings is the one card I never boarded in, mainly because I haven´t been playing against any deck with flyers. However, I know this card is great so two is the number I will stick with.
Angelic Purge didn´t do that well for me, but I did not really board him that much, which I think I should because it is a great and flexible card. Probably won´t remove it.
