At heart this is an aggressive deck, but can fight on a different axis than most, using self sacrificing as a means to trigger our blood artists and grave pacts for reach or board control.

Our creatures come down early, in multiples, and typically 'die well.' Doomed traveler spawns a spirit, bloodsoaked champion can be recurred, and Teysa and Xathrid Necromancer provide additional death triggers to keep the threats coming. Lingering souls also provides up to 4 bodies per card, maximizing potential sacrifice value while also posing the threat of a quick combat oriented death via our pump effects (sorin and zealous).

Our sacrifice outlets include Cartel Aristocrat, which is the heart and soul of the deck, as it is nearly impossible to remove outside of a wrath effect if played correctly, and thoughtpicker witch, which enables us to help the opponent flood out during the endgame to close out the match. Out of the board we have a non creature outlet, mind slash, that can be very difficult for an opponent to deal with if they don't have enchantment removal post board. This typically comes in for grindier matchups like WUR control and junk.

Auriok champion may look out of place, but it is mostly maindecked hate for two of the top three decks in the current metagame: Burn and Twin. While its application in burn is apparent (pro red and lifegain), the reasoning vs Twin is as follows: It shuts off 67% of the combo potentially uncounterable as early as turn two on a very hard to remove body (only cryptic bounce if you don't attack with it vs izzet formations). By sticking a blood artist and holding back for zealous persection the rest of the game (if needed), combo attempts with pestermite will lose them the game "out of nowhere". These are usually the first cuts made in sideboard games that it isn't a rock star, however.

This deck's resiliency makes it a great choice against burn, affinity, jund/junk, and other creature based decks, as well as decks that rely heavily on spot removal like UWR control. Being mostly a human tribal deck, the inclusion of cavern of souls puts a lot of pressure on counterspell based blue decks. Thoughtseize, and stain the mind ensure you aren't a sitting duck against combo or control decks, such as twin or amulet. Even the all-powerful emrakul cast from tron simply becomes a 15 mana time-walk, as it can be removed by gravepact or teysa after hitting the board.

This deck is eagerly awaitiing the inclusion of Liliana, Heretical Healer....
