What do you think of Sanguinary Priest? He's 4 mana, which is much higher than Blood Artist and co, but the ability to target other player's creatures with your death triggers seems like a powerful way to control the board.
I guess the downside is that killing creatures rather than draining our opponents directly is slowing down our main wincon, and if we're just planning on draining then we should play one of the cheaper options instead...

Calum13395 Whoops looks like I forgot about this guy in my update. It's unfortunate since for 3 mana, this would be an insane addition, effectively a better Mayhem Devil. For 4, I'm hesitant, but he might be a good addition. Draining for 1 and being able to target creatures is powerful, especially since we can double it with Teysa. I wouldn't say that board control is a downside. It's definitely an upside that he has the ability to hit creatures, it's just that for 4 mana, he's double the price of our cheaper drainers. Regardless, I don't think drainers are the best comparison anyway. He's more like a Grave Pact that seconds as a bad drainer. I'll keep my eye on him and maybe include him in a build soon. Thanks for the reminder!

Masterful I don’t think Saw in Half is kinda Animated Dead with a death-trigger. It could provide you much, much more - on instand speed.
Make 2 Esper Sentinels or Deed Gnome Terramancers and double their triggers.
The same is true for nearly each of your non-legendary-creature. Double Blood Artist, Zulaport, Knight of White Orchid, etc. etc. The ceiling of saw is damn high, while the floor isn’t bad either. It’s a darn good card.

Masterful, just wanted to comment to say thanks for maintaining this decklist. Teysa has been my favourite deck since I built it some time ago, and this has been an invaluable resource over time to continue to upgrade and tune my deck, especially as the format continues to speed up. All the info and justification for inclusions + exclusions with each release has been incredibly helpful.

Housegheist That's why I compared it to clones. It's basically a clone that can also give us death triggers. This is nice, but a 3 mana clone isn't a staple in most decks. Phantasmal Image is great for 2 mana, and that's why I like Animate Dead. For 2 mana, we get a similar amount of versatility.
jellyske Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad the deck and my writeups can help. Cheers, good luck, and have fun!

I was wondering what you think about Welcoming Vampire and Mangara, the Diplomat (on a budget) since I didn't see them in your Maybeboard?
Thanks in advance!

DensxD Those are great cards on a budget. You could probably cut any of our expensive card draw or tutors for them, or whatever you don't have in your collection.

kirbysan Overall it feels too ramp and artifact-focused for us. That being said, Razorlash Transmogrant is probably the best second Reassembling Skeleton we have access to now. I'm not sure if we need another one in the deck due to our tutor suite, but it's great to have an option.
November 4, 2022 8:10 p.m.
Masterful I saw that one too and I'm not a fan. BB would be harder to cast than 1B and the fact that it wouldn't die to Skullclamp is a turn-off. It also can't block so it coming in untapped does nothing for us.
November 5, 2022 1:42 p.m.
kirbysan I'm mostly considering it in the context of combo turns with Luminous Broodmoth and Phyrexian Altar or Pitiless Plunderer and Phyrexian Altar. There have been times where I've had these pieces but was missing Reassembling Skeleton. Another copy of slightly worse skeleton could remedy that, but our tutors might be enough for most situations.

Hey Masterful - Hope all is well! Just wanted to see how play testing has been going with the new cards you added along with the mana base rework. Do you have any newer additions or changes? I know you have been busy.
Curious how Weatherlight Compleated is working for you. I really haven't found much value in it (i.e. too slow) and Dark Prophecy to be a bit better and more consistent.
Lastly, what do you think of Saw in Half? This would be a great way to generate tokens fast and double death triggers. With Teysa out you could create 4 tokens - and even more if you're destroying a fodder piece.
Lastly, curious if you had any other adjustments or additions you were testing or thinking about adding. Thanks again as always!

Foster_I_Am I have been super busy haha so the update is going real slow. I haven't had as much time to test as I want, but the mana base rework and new additions are looking good for the most part. So far, I kind of agree that Weatherlight Compleated is too slow. I may cut it for Dark Prophecy or a Village Rites type card.
I'm not too keen on Saw in Half since it requires we already have a decent boardstate. I'd rather play fodder pieces or card advantage. Teysa also can't double it since she only doubles triggers from permanents.

[Masterful] No worries! I appreciate the update haha. I imagine you're still busy but was wondering how the play testing is going and if you made any new cuts or additions? Will be interesting to see what additions the new sets bring.

Foster_I_Am Since I missed Brother's War I'm gonna do a double update for that and All Will Be One once the full set is spoiled! Not many changes from Brother's War, but I've been looking at Sanguinary Priest. Weatherlight Compleated is still sus, and the new "Mondrak, Glory Dominus" is quite interesting.
January 17, 2023 5:17 p.m.
Masterful I saw the Mondrak, Glory Dominus as well and at first thought it'd work in Teysa. While it doesn't beat Anointed Procession, it has a sacrifice outlet on it, but we have to pay into it. Also, the sacrifice doesn't really give us much in terms of payout but it could be nice to have. My gut feeling is it'll end up being like Weatherlight Compleated where it could sound good on paper but doesn't provide enough synergy to be worth the slot. I've tried a few games without the fetch lands but funnily enough I'm not playing a lot of people in my public pods that run the counter fetch cards. Furthermore, I got color screwed one game and pulled the win out of my ass at the end with a Talisman of Hierarchy.

I’ve been playing with weathertight and it’s worked for me every time I get it out on 2 or 3. It usually helps with bolas’s citadel being able to draw and scry. I see nothing wrong with it but could be more than happy to switch it out for an imperial seal if need be. Running without the fetch lands has actually gone really well. I don’t see myself needing them even without fetch hate.
Sanguinary priest seems fine but at 4 mana what would he replace? Tramsmogrants crown seems like another good skullclamp, but doesn’t automatically kill our creature. Honestly I don’t know what is good to add from these sets. I do notice that you took victimize out, but honestly, I’ve been running it lately and it’s been super helpful, especially in the later game.
I hear talks of another teysa effect on a black creature so I’m super excited about that. This possibly makes adding another tutor in (imp seal) so that it’s easier to get.

Masterful & jelwell New card spoiled: Drivnod, Dominus of the Massacre
If a creature dying causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers one more time. {b/p}{b/p}, exile three creature cards from your graveyard: Put an indestructible counter on ~
Not sure how many death doublers we need but it requires far less setup than Ratadrabik of Urborg and could accelerate our gameplan much faster than before?
January 18, 2023 9:42 p.m.
kirbysan so excited for another double death trigger effect. What would we slot out though? It being 5 cmc is tricky here. I want to say luminous broodmoth but we get way more value with 2 sac triggers instead of one. I’d want to say razaketh but I like the tutor.
January 19, 2023 5 p.m.
kirbysan Mondrak is very versatile as a creature, but I think I agree with you it doesn't do enough for us as is. We focus more on death triggers than token generation, so it doesn't get as much value in our deck as it would a pure token deck. It also conflicts with Teysa as a 4-drop engine-support card. The sac outlet is nice, but having to sac 2 creatures each time and costing 1 mana makes it sorta awkward. It's a great blocker which is nice, and I wouldn't blame anyone for playing it, but it's not efficient enough.
If you're getting color screwed with the new mana base, that's unfortunate, but even with a perfect mana base you'll be color screwed, flooded, or mana screwed sometimes. Because it takes so long to play EDH games, and everyone's meta is different, getting good experimental data is hard. Sample size is always low, so finding the best strategy relies on theoretical stats. You getting mana screwed right after changing the mana base probably may feel like a strong correlation, but it's still anecdotal and probably a coincidence. I'm yet to be mana screwed and have found the new mana base strong given that it counters a lot of strong cards in the meta, but that's also anecdotal. In theory, this amount of dual lands should be good enough to make sure we aren't color screwed a significant amount of the time. That being said, if your meta isn't playing the counter cards much and you have the fetchlands lying around, or if you like playing fetchlands, play them. It's not a huge difference in the functionality of the deck.
jelwell Weatherlight Compleated is definitely at its best on turn 2, but that also has an opportunity cost of not developing a ramp piece or fodder creature. It takes so long to get online without Teysa that I'm pretty pessimistic about it at this point. If you have a Bolas's Citadel on board, you're really ahead anyway.
I'm not a fan of Transmogrant's Crown since we already have many Skullclamp tutors, and it's much worse than clamp. If I wanted another clamp I'd play Steelshaper's Gift before this one. But if someone is making a budget Teysa list and doesn't have many tutors, crown might be good there.
I still don't know what to do with Sanguinary Priest. If he were 3 mana, he'd be a slam dunk, but 4 is competing with Grave Pact and the likes. Being able to control the board with this much precision could be powerful, but I'm still considering it.
kirbysanjelwell I'm more disappointed in the new dominus than I thought. I was hoping it'd have the same sac-indestructible ability as Mondrak. Not only do we not get a sac outlet, but the indestructible counter is pretty hard to get early on and might hurt us. At 5 mana, he's just a weaker Teysa in our 99, which stacks worse than Luminous Broodmoth. We can't afford to play too many clones of Teysa in the 99 anyway since they're expensive and clog our hand. If we have Teysa out alongside some death triggers, we're already super ahead. Much like Ratadrabik of Urborg, this card is overkill when ahead and super bad when behind.
January 19, 2023 5:49 p.m.
It was only the 1 game that I got color screwed and I ended up winning the game at the end so perhaps it was an outlier. I'll continue playing without the fetches and see.
The more I think on it the less I like either of the Dominus. Although they play into Teysa, they don't do anything more efficiently than what we're currently doing. Luminous Broodmoth is better not only because it's cheaper but we can also get some ETB effects from our tutor/fetch creatures. I definitely would never swap out Razaketh, the Foulblooded as he can simply end games being out and unanswered. The same could not be said for Drivnod.
January 19, 2023 6:48 p.m.
The one aristocrat we get from this set and it sucks. Vraan, Executioner Thane. 1B. Whenever one or more other creatures you control die, each opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life. This ability triggers only once each turn.
January 20, 2023 11:04 a.m.
Masterful, kirbysan I would never cut razaketh, just thinking of things around the cmc to cut, and it doesn’t look like dominus can cut it. If I cut weatherlight, I would probably replace it with imperial seal. Not too sure what else to replace it with.
The new aristocrat could be good. 2 mana is the usual, but once a turn doesn’t help. Not worth cutting one of our original aristocrats.
Side note: I’ve been playing with the land base here, to try it out, and i haven’t seen a difference in how the deck works. Besides the usual mana screw, I think this mana base is next to perfect.
I was also eyeballing Body Launderer as something that could be decent recursion. On the same note Storm of Souls could show potential? Late game if too much of our stuff keeps dying.
January 20, 2023 2:25 p.m.
Masterful had cut Dark Prophecy to test out Weatherlight Compleated but I'm thinking prophecy is better. While Weatherlight achieves the same thing when it's fully turned on it doesn't do much when it comes in late. You also need some form of sac engine going to get it up to snuff. Prophecy on the other hand can hit the ground running and draw you into answers from the get go.
Body Launderer is ok but we don't have too much reanimation going on so discarding cards is not always optimal. Our typical reanimation strategy is just going for Living Death that also acts as a board wipe. Agadeem's Awakening Flip is also another option but can double as a land if we're mana screwed. Reanimate is used for our single target reanimation and for a single black it's hard to beat that slot. As Launderer is only a single target reanimation it doesn't beat these cards.
Storm of Souls used to be in the main decklist but 6CMC is a lot to hold up and the typical meta is usually faster with more interaction. It's another reason why cards such as Rise of the Dark Realms was also cut.

halestor91 Halestor19 1 Less mana for Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim is a huge deal. I like her more than Bastion of Remembrance. I've played a few test games with Braids, Arisen Nightmare and she's pretty insane. Drawing 3+ cards per turn is really great as long as we're not against token decks. I've found myself tutoring for her somewhat often. I haven't been able to test Weatherlight Compleated a ton yet since it's been rarely showing up, but I still like it in theory. Ratadrabik of Urborg is too niche imo. I realize you may have seen my update by now since your first comment is pretty old, but I wanted to answer your questions anyway for clarity haha.
Saw in Half is interesting but 3 mana feels like too much for this effect. In a normal deck this is essentially a clone, but we get to take advantage of death triggers, so it's a bit better. However, I'd probably rather just run Animate Dead for much better consistency and effectiveness from behind.
