I'm still fairly new to the game, and haven't learned what cards are best in what situations, but I'm making a deck pretty similar to this and I was wondering how well Raider's wake would work.

I'm glad you liked the deck BOOMsquid!

Raiders' Wake has a awesome synergy with this list, the only problem is that it's a worse Megrim or Liliana's Caress due to the higher CMC.

This is a really amazing deck, I want to know what you think of adding infect to the deck. It could be attached to Nekusar and then just use a big wheel like Wheel and Deal or Wheel of Fortune I know that infect is normally frowned upon but it seems like a great way to reduce the amount of spells needed to cast and the number of turns that go by with you dealing damage to people.

Thanks for the comment xander11! Infect is awesome! I already run Phyresis , but Glistening Oil is nice too! I don't have more infect cards because I don't want to be too dependent on my commander.

Maizena Sorry about that I missed the inclusion of those two cards. In that case I really don't have anything to add to this deck

Thanks a lot killroy726! I REAAAAAALLLY appreciate your comment! :)

When I started this deck years ago it was also ad eck shifted away from the Jeleva pre-con deck and I'm upgrading it since then.

I used to play a notion thief in my Nekusar deck before I converted it to my Kess deck. Although it does stop your opponents from drawing cards the upside is massive. Paired with the puzzle box, your opponents basically have to top deck. And with a added Laboratory Maniac you can win easily with a few back to back wheels. Also feel free to look at my list, it is basically like a nekusar deck in play style but not win style, if you want ideas.

Is there a valid argument to swap Niv Mizzet Firemind to Niv-Mizzet, Parun instead? Is the deck able to consistently generate UUURRR or is that too much of a hindrance?

To be completely honest, just swapping Notion Thief for a land should be fine. You have enough ramp and a low enough curve to do so. Some other cards that stick out are Curiosity due to the fact that I don't think you'll be swinging with creatures too much, and Helm of Obedience because the chance of whiffing or just not getting a good card. Library of Leng is another card you could potentially remove.

@ derpytrollerZ

All of these cards that you mentioned works wonder for the type of deck Nekusar runs. Nekusar deals the damage therefore causing Curiosity to trigger, Nekusar decks doesn't swing with creatures, he himself deals the damage due to the way his ability is worded. Library of Leng is also to prevent the deck itself from decking out and selectively allowing you to keep which cards you want in a wheel effect.

@ Maizena I would say No Mercy or Kess, Dissident Mage can be your flex spot for Notion Thief . No Mercy is quite easy to remove nowadays and Kess is flexible as she can be good, but it really depends on what you have in your grave. Whereas Notion Thief with a resolve wheel can win you the game or give you an overwhelming advantage.

Sorry it took me that long to answer you guys!!!

drcatherwood - You were right, Notion Thief is awesome! It's almost a instawin when you cast a "wheel".

ThaneGarrus - I'd rather to stick with the Firemind. I's easy to cast with the and it is a "combo" with Mind Over Matter .

derpytrollerZ - Curiosity triggers with any damage, not only combat. I can draw my whole deck when using it on Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind or just draw a bunch of cards with Nekusar and a "wheel". Helm of Obedience is a dead card if you don't have a Leyline of the Void on the field, but I really like this combo. And the Leyline is a must in my meta. hkhssweiss already explained the importance of the Library of Leng , it prevent the deck itself from decking out and selectively allows me to keep which cards I want in a wheel effect. It also gives me unlimited hand size.

hkhssweiss - I no longer run Kess, it was a nice suggestion, thank you! I'm thinking about swaping No Mercy for the new Bolas's Citadel .

Rambolicious_0 - I used to run them in the past, they're really not worth it.

Interisting list you have brewed up mate! I play something simular. Although I'm running Rolling Earthquake instead of Blasphemous Act. Since it can sweep a board early or kill the table late. You can also tutor it with Spellseeker whitch I play over Phyrexian Tyranny, because it locked me out of wheeling to often (also not great with Notion Thief). How is Paradox Engine working out for you? I'm playing Raider's Wake in that spot now, but the Engine has more combo potential it seems. Bolas's Citadel is also a nice edit over Necropotence, I'm test it too.

Great deck list, I really appreciate your detailed explanation of each individual card inclusion.

Could you please explain why your list doesn't include Kederekt Parasite? I'm tweaking my own list and can't quite figure out what the downside is.

Thanks!

Also, as far as counterspells go I like Arcane Denial more than Disallow . Sure, draw your 2 cards - but they'll hurt and they'll probably wheel anyway.

Sorry it took me that long to answer you guys (AGAIN)!!!

  • Psychonoud Thanks for the comment! I prefer BA over Rolling Earthquake because of the mana cost and it dosen't deals me damage (most of the time I'm the target of the aggro decks). Phyrexian Tyranny isn't my best "pain" card and I use it only for finish the game, and Raiders' Wake is a much safer option, I agree with you. Notion Thief and Consecrated Sphinx are draw machines that help me combo off. Paradox Engine is a must in this deck!!! I run a lot of mana rocks, with PE I can easily "chain" my wheels.

  • n0130dy13th Thanks a lot! The first time I build this deck back at 2016 it was basically the Commander 2013 Precon with about 20 different cards. The biggest and more important change I made was the mana base. It helped me A LOT at my LGS!

  • yuval Thank you mate, I still need to give the explanation a update. There are 2 things I don't like in Kederekt Parasite . 1 - I need a red permanent and I run only 2 of them and the commander. This card makes me too reliant on Nekusar. I don't like it. 2- It's a creature, the easiest permanent type to remove in the game. I used to run Arcane Denial but the 2 cards draw is a big drawback, a combo player will not care about the damage if it brings him/her closer to winning the game. Moreover, Disallow also counters activated abilitys, its a huge improvement over AD for only one more .

  • Falkenstein That price is because the list is almost all composed of foil/promo cards. And some expensive cards like the old dual lands and some mana rocks can be replaced in order to the list became more accessible.

  • Jamirostyle Thanks! This card is awesome! It will replace Incendiary Command !!

Have you considered Breathstealer's Crypt ? Not only does it make people reconsider drawing creatures but it reveals what everyone's drawing.

June 16, 2019 4:11 p.m.

Maizena says... #22

richardzk Thanks for the comment! The Crypt is very nice in a Nekusar build, I didn't added it becaus my LGS meta has few decks with a decent number of creatures on it.

Futhermore, thats a combo deck, with BC I need to reveal my hand as well and thats a HUUUGE drawback.

I love your deck, and I'm currently trying to build it, however, some of the cards are a little out of my price range. Force of Will , Badlands , Scalding Tarn , Underground Sea , Volcanic Island , Grim Monolith , Mana Crypt , Mox Diamond , Mox Opal , Imperial Seal , Time Spiral and Wheel of Fortune .

I would appreciate it very much if you could provide any suggestions or themes I should look for in replacements.

Maizena says... #24

Thanks a lot, mattxd. I'm really glad you want to build this list!

You could swap:

Force of Will - Force of Negation

The Old Duals - The 2 pain lands missing and a extra Island

Scalding Tarn - Any other fetch land with blue, another Island if you can't afford it.

Grim Monolith - Basalt Monolith

Mana Crypt , Mox Diamond , Mox Opal - They do not have a substitute those 3 are the best mana rocks in the game. Howerver, you could try some drop 2 mana rocks like Mind Stone and Prismatic Lens or even a Chromatic Lantern

Imperial Seal - Personal Tutor

Time Spiral and Wheel of Fortune - Dark Deal and Incendiary Command

I hope it helps you!!! o/

Hi Maizena! Nekusar was my first commander deck! So, no love for Narset, Parter of Veils? It seems counterintuitive, but Narset followed by a "wheel" can buy you tons of time to assemble a combo! And a think Narset + Teferi's Puzzle Box can be backbreaking, isn't it? Good job!
