I'm looking to host a local MTG tournament at my house in the coming months and am interested in the format, I think it's amazing!
But my problem is knowing whether or not people actually are using cards that were in standard together, and that seems like a big inherent flaw as I can't be checking each decks cards and looking up symbols to see if they are together.
My idea's so far making the top 8 mandatory "deck check" to help curb cheaters because they know it'll get checked if they do well, and also maybe a master list printed of grouped symbols to quick check although I don't know where to begin with finding a list like that, and also it would still be problematic for cards that were reprinted in other sets, but legal in the standard they're using.
Or we just go on trust, but since i'm wanting to do a serious tourney i'm looking for more ideas here. So far the best is deck check for top 8, i'm open to more ideas, thanks!

@kooderna, Awesome that you are doing a local tournament! As for the legality of decks, your idea sounds good. Just an FYI, you can use this spreadsheet made by TheFoilAjani and Nef to help make it easier to check the decks. An additional idea to help speed up deck checking would be to ask players to bring their deck pre-sorted by set? A problem with that will be checking the reprints, but it still is an idea.
@thestrauch, Elmeris, Voxzorz, Awesome decks! If you want to playtest, message me sometime.
On a side note, Ashockfan, we still haven't played our match. Can you play sometime today?

@AwesomeName thanks a ton this is great ill keep you updated!!
Absolutely perfect. My idea is require deck submission a week before the tourney, and on the deck registration they must list the standard set it was legal in

Is there a way to still join this? I'd absolutely love to. On which platform are you playing?

@kooderna, Yeah that idea sounds good.
@JohnnyBaggins Yeah, our last Shelf tournament was online on untap.in, and you can definetely join the next one we do on there.
@TheFoilAjani We should definetely do that!

This is simple. You can check every deck if u want when players buy in. They built the deck so they know what standard it was in. Every standard should be assigned a number in chronological order but that's for the format makers to assign. They must all submit their deck with a list of every card and the set it was printed in on a print out with the sets symbols. Have the decks pre-sorted by set for checking and u still have to check the top 8 to make sure ppl haven't been altering their decks inbetween.

So everyone that competed in our first shelf competition, you may or may not know that we never finished the tournament because we had one more match, which was me vs. Ashockfan. It took a while to find the time because we both have very busy schedules, but we finally were able to play today.
Game 1 Ashockfan wrecked me. I was mana screwed and could do nothing except wait for my Ancestral Vision to go off. I did get a second land out of that, but by that time it was too late. Ashockfan beat me game 1.
Game 2 he dropped a Vexing Shusher turn two. This made almost all of my hand dead. I managed to get rid of it and I won with only 4 or 6 life.
Game 3 I started off being barraged with Ball Lightning, Hellspark Elemental and the like. I was down to 6, but Ashockfan was out of steam and running low on cards in hand. Tapping him out with a Mistbind Clique, I pulled in my final victory.
So yeah, to sum it up, we had really close, good matches. Double Scion of Oona on the field were my allstars. Thanks to Ashockfan for being a great opponent with a great deck!

I was thinking about an old debate we had, about whether or not standard decks before 8th edition are worth it. So I looked at the popular type1 decks, and the mirage and tempest blocks decks. None of those decks seem to compare to the decks of today's standard decks. for example, the "blue black control" decks in the theros-m15 block is easily much better than the "sandsipoise" deck from the mirage block, which was considered tier 1 at the time. Also, we discussed how dual lands were included in type1 decks, and how powerful dual lands are. But the thing is, how are dual lands powerful, when the most dangerous creature of that time was Serendib Efreet? Is Serendib Efreet more powerful than Phyrexian Obliterator? I think decks from the newer blocks are better, like the infect decks from new phyrexia. I do hope you guys look over this, and decide to add decks from pre 8th edition, because they are not more powerful than recent standard decks. thank you.

I like your point there. I think this might just be my opinion, and I may be wrong, but I think the reason they want to keep it above 8th edition is to keep "free" spells like Force of Will and Daze and Cabal Therapy out of the format. But I will help test decks out and see what those decks bring to the format.

I mean, I can understand the hate of "free" spells, and such. But there can be a banlist, and obviously they shouldn't include certain type one decks, like the turn one memory jar win.

Wow this coded background is giving me a headache and I can't read half the black text. It's a real turn off. I love how all but 2 cards on the banlist are from the same set.

It's cause standard affinity was stupid. They don't want stupid.

Yeah, jamesfiek, if you didn't know, affinity was brokenly powerful in standard. Mirrodin standard was literally just play affinity or main deck artifact hate. Many of the key cards in that deck are banned simply because otherwise it would be completely dominant, and Shelf wouldn't have much variety. Also the text was fixed to be all white so hopefully it is more readable now.

I think legacy trix decks would be cool in shelf.
February 23, 2016 2:53 p.m.
AwesomeNa I already knew, I was just pointing out that there are barely any other bans than affinity stupid stuff.
February 23, 2016 3:17 p.m.
BloodoftheBloodMoon says... #21
The short ban list is because there hasn't been extensive testing in the format. They started with the basic over powered cards like jace and stoneforge and skull clamp. Then they looked at the most op standard decks of all time, and then banned affinity
February 23, 2016 3:33 p.m.
Dude i'm gonna play Battle of Wits for this format lol.
February 23, 2016 3:56 p.m.
The format is very similar to "Make your own standard", where only instead of picking a past existing standard, you pick any two blocks and a core set (might change with two set paradigm) and build a deck from the cards there. And just like here, your opponent can have diferent two blocks and core set.

@bah-bammmm, Yeah, I'm thinking about the whole legacy thing, not sure. I'm just worried a tier one deck is going to show up with a bunch of cards on the reserved list, or are difficult to get, because one of the reasons for playing this format is that it is cheaper than most others.
@jamesfiek True that the bans are mostly Mirrodin. The banned list is definitely a work in progress. As ryanjoha stated, the current cards are banned because they didn't require much if any testing to prove them ban worthy.
@Udinaas Yeah it is similar. I think bananamaniaman and I had some inspiration from that format that led us to create this one.

bah-bammmm says... #25
Well, you can always ban overpowered decks. Not that hard.

Made a new shelf deck. It's yet to be playtested, so I don't know how good it is, so yeah...
But Precursor Golem.
