Here's a question: is there a deck that you think could break the format? I honestly don't know, as I've only gotten into standard and modern within the past year (before that I was strictly casual/kitchen table). Therefore, I am not familiar with previous metas at all. What are your thoughts on that?
The reason I ask is because whatever deck has the most potential to break the format should be playtested in our first tourney. ...Not only that, but it will probably be super fun/crazy to play a tourney where every deck is using banlist-cards, lol.

Here's a question: does anybody think there is a deck that will break the format? If so, then that deck should be playtested in the first tourney as well. The reason I have to ask is because until a year ago, I played strictly casual/kitchen table, and had no interest in the formats. Thus, I have no clue about previous metas, and what will obviously do well and what won't.

Caw-Blade is the fat, bloated hawk in the room. That deck will be the deck to beat.

Is there a list of 'Block Combos' that newer/casual players can use to build decks with?
Like, KHANS + ORIGINS + BFZ
THEROS + M15 + KHANS
And those before it?
That's all I know myself. Though I never grabbed Theros up. Did not even know M15 and Theros were leaving at the same time. :p
But yeah, Modern is great in the amount of cards. But it also creates a situation where 90% of cards aren't even considered. What a waste.

Loreshadow: TheFoilAjani made an Excel sheet with the previous "Standards" all already divided up for you to choose from. Follow the following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oGvzTKIW3GDu1CIL40xLX935J6qL-o99bbwzi1TUNmU/edit

I got my local shop owner talking about this and he says in the next couple of weeks he might consider trying it out in a tournament setting

Nice! Tell him that the format is still in development and that he should have players report how matches go.

@Gattison, Yeah, I definitely think affinity is going to be way too powerful. From what I've heard, in Mirrodin standard, it was either play affinity, or lose trying to beat it. At tournaments, Affinity was literally the only viable deck. Wizards banned a lot of key cards in affinity, but it was still the strongest deck in Standard. We'll still test it out though, because I never actually saw what it was like.
@TheFoilAjani, Sure, I'll tell him to add the spreadsheet right now.
@Huppster05 Wow, that's awesome! If you do it, tell us the results!

@TheFoilAjani doesn't caw-blade get fairly big boost from Stoneforge Mystic? Given the original "Caw-go" list didn't have them and could still be quite good.

Well here's the list I would play. I just finished figuring out what the sideboard would look like. The sideboard was much easier to figure out than I'd have thought with only the standard I picked available.
My new theory is that all standard sets have answers to any situation, especially when you look at the core sets.

I love this idea more than I can adequately express at the moment. Makes me happy I never took apart my Theros Standard deck (that routinely outpaces other aggro decks, and is even a match for most "fair" Modern decks).

Anyone else that wasn't linked in that post should post on my wall about joining a tourney.
( If you haven't noticed this about me, I really like administrative duties. I'm quite good at them.)

TheFoilAjani, It's fine about the double post. Thanks for taking the lead for setting up the tournament! I'm not so sure about having it this weekend though. I'm thinking we should first post something about it on the forums, so more people can know about the format and the tournament. After people hear about it we'll give them one or two weeks to brew decks and have the tournament then.

Sounds good. I'm really pumped for this format. I mentioned it to a friend who is basically next in line to run FNM at an LGS about 5 minutes away from me, so that should add another store that runs the event. Our next goal is to get a really large gamestore (Pair a Dice Games) to start Shelf up there also.

Jenlea 4 and Sturdy Shelves are two different lock-out decks. They are both pretty cheap, so anyone interested in the format could start being a sandbag for as little as $120! Basically I'm trying out different takes on decks in the format that could be interesting. Also most of my titles are shelf puns/jokes. Deal with it.
