Nicol Bolas, the Greatest Control Planeswalker

Modern Competitive Control UBR (Grixis)

Grixis control featuring Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker as the Sole Wincon of the deck. Basically, the goal is to neutralize everything the opponent throws at you until you play Bolas, destroy all their land and discard their hand before killing them slowly with Snapcasters, Bolts, and Creeping Tar Pits.

There is a lot of strategy in how to successfully land Bolas, but once that is done it's basically impossible to lose. He answers anything that is not hexproof, and if you get his ultimate off, he devastates the opponent even more than Emrakul.

Be very careful casting him against blue decks: Always check their hand with a Thoughtseize first. If there are no counterspells in there afterward, hit them with a Rakdos's Return.

Follow in Bolas' evil footsteps, and Shadow of Doubt people when they use fetch lands, try some other shenanigans, or simply to cycle.

Currently I am looking to fit a little bit of life gain in here, since the deck does deal a lot of damage to the player. Batterskull will likely be what I use for that, or maybe a second Cruel Ultimatum.

A fun interaction that can be done at 7 mana (if you have Far / Away in your graveyard after sideboarding is to target it with Snapcaster Mage, casting both halves using "Far" on your Snapcaster to return it to your hand to be used again, and "Away" to cause your opponent to sacrifice a creature.

What I used to use for budgeting was 2x Into the Roil and 2x Dismal Failure where the 4x Cryptic Command are. Until there is a reprint, I am still budgeting 1x Black Sun's Zenith for 1x Damnation.
