Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind-Curiousity Edition(V 1.5)

Commander / EDH*

CarsonMcNair

I Introduction

**This deck is a combo deck featuring Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind, meant to be used in a moderate to high competitive level of games or pods. The general strategy of this deck is to play Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and enchant him with either Curiosity or Ophidian Eye, doing as much damage as possible. Another strategy to take(If people's life totals are too high, or too many people in the game) Is to play Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Laboratory Maniac and then getting Curiousity:, Ophidian Eye, or Tandem Lookout and just mill out and win. The biggest goal in the deck's design is being able to quickly play and execute the combo, while also keeping advantage and controlling the game and other players.

II Deck Colors

We choose the Izzet(Red/Blue) color pairing because we really liked the control aspect and how well it could protect the combo. Reason two for the color pairing is because the commander we wanted to build around is in this color pairing. The red and Blue color pairing offers a lot to a combo deck like this including: Control, Card Draw, and some of the best planeswalkers in Magic. Some things that this combination is lacking are Tutor effect, spot removal, and exile effects, which would improve the deck.

III Strengths and Weaknesses

The deck has a few strengths and weaknesses in a vacuum, for example, it takes a few turns to set up and execute the combo, which can leave the deck vulnerable depending on who you are playing against. However, the deck is inherently strong against decks that contain little to counterspells. This deck has a lot of strong matchups and few week ones, for example, the matchups against other slow combo decks, midgrange, or even other control style decks are very good. However the deck is beaten by very aggressive decks, such as infect, fast combo decks, and general aggro. We would rate the deck very good based on its characteristics, it is very Flexible, consistent, efficient, and effective. We tried to make this deck as well-rounded as possible, we may have traded some ramp, just so we had more interaction and answers which we feel is a fair trade-off.

IV General Strategy

The objective of this deck is to combo off using cards like Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Curiosity or Ophidian Eye. The goal does not really change against certain matchups, against more controlling decks try to keep faster hands with more counterspells, against faster matchups try to combo off as fast as possible. In a mulligan with deck we're looking for a couple lands, acceleration, interaction, and our combo pieces or something that will help us find them. Each turn with this deck generally looks like a standard control list, playing lands and ramp, then answering things until we combo off. One unfortunate thing about this deck is, there's no contingency plan, meaning if something goes wrong all we can hope to do is kill people with out few creatures.

V Combos and Synergies

The interactions in this deck are critical to winning the game. To win you need to be able to the the combo and make sure it resolves. In this deck we need to go out of our way to achieve the combos and synergies. Tutors, card draw, and interaction are critical to staying alive and getting our combo online. There are many ways these interactions can be disrupted, including counterspells, removal, and exile effects. We have many answers to help us stay afloat through all of this, as we anticipate people will be trying to disrupt the combo. To set off the combo in this deck you need to cast Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and put enchantments like Curiosity or Ophidian Eye, then reshuffling your graveyard into your library and repeating again with Day's Undoing. If that interaction doesn't work, you can play Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Laboratory Maniac, then soulbonding Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind to Tandem Lookout and drawing the entire deck, thus winning the game.
