It is definitely slow. I haven't seen it in any other lists. Phyrexian Crusader ?
Pro red and pro white?

Oh geez, I thought it was only pro white not both. Yeah I am adding that. Best part is they fit into my budget catagory haha

Love this deck! The only thing that I think you might like is Hero's Downfall for planes walker removal. It's a bit pricey I know but just maybe if you had the chance to get them.

@ LtMiller117 unfortunately Hero's Downfall isn't very viable in Modern, it's simply too slow since most good aggro decks can kill you by turns 4-5 (sometimes 3). Also, Planeswalkers are not very relevant in Modern aside from some key ones such as Karn Liberated and Liliana of the Veil . Other of course are around and show up in certain Midrange and Control decks, but those two are the most common considering the overall meta.

Haha I had the playset but traded them away, because it's too slow as posted above.
I'm not worried about planeswalkers, I have so much board control with this deck, also I have 4x Abrupt Decay and 4x Overgrown Tomb in my sideboard if I have to deal with weird things. (Bitterblossom )

I really like Phyrexian Crusader . It might as well say "Protection from Lightning Bolt and Path to Exile ." I believe there should be 4 in the 75.

I love him also, and if I can't get the two lilianas in there I will grab 2 more of him, he also works against doom blade, providing a lot of hexproof unblockable essentially :D

Not to mention his 4 black chroma in his mana cost. Very nice to pop out gary after him i'm sure. I incorporated gary into my zombie deck since i couldn't fit him in my discard deck :D http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zombie-apocalypse-20-02-14-1/. This deck looks really strong, i'm really getting into black these days. +1

Thanks haha I'm loving this deck. I don't have the lilianas, or the obliterators, once I get my taxes back I'm getting the obliterators first since they are a necessity for this deck.
March 1, 2014 10:39 p.m.
i would MB overgrown tombs aswell as abrupt decay. Abrupt decay is too good in modern, and tombs in your SB is a waste of space
March 4, 2014 9:55 a.m.
I really like this current set up and it does look very strong. However, given that you're paying the kicker cost for gatekeeper, don't you effectively have 12 3-drops?
March 4, 2014 10:04 a.m.
Magiclover318 says... #14
Yeah I do, Which may seem like a lot, but I will generally put out the gatekeeper, or nighthawks. The crusaders are there for more defense against aggro decks, I was thinking just using a Black Knight instead of the crusader, lower cmc, and no infect

Magiclover318 says... #15
Well I added in Abrupt Decay and the crusaders are in sb for now.

Vendetta is far better than Doom Blade
I would run a mix of Smother or Dismember or Maelstrom Pulse or Bile Blight instead of Go for the Throat

Yeah it is, but I don't like burning myself that much. I would rather pay one extra mana and keep the life total up. Besides I only wanted Thoughtseize as my one drop.

Phyrexian Arena seems better here than Sign in Blood for a few reasons:
It adds devotion.
It provides a steady stream of cards rather than just 2 once.
Geralf's Messenger is pretty good as it adds 3 devotion, pings the opponent, and can either attack or chump block twice.
Bloodghast
seems pretty good here. It provides T2 2 devotion, chumps all day, and and survives removal.

All 3 of those cards I have looked at.
The arena is too slow for modern
The geralfs is quite nice but my deck is really aggro, I can't afford them to come in tapped
I put in the gatekeepers in place of bloodghast for blocking and potentially making them sack a creature while adding the same devotion
March 9, 2014 7:11 p.m.
BattleWalrus says... #20
I don't see the validity of your complaint against Geralf's Messenger . Most creatures suffer from summoning sickness, Geralf comes into play and does 2 damage to opponent. So essentially he is like a 2/2 haste/unblockable creature when he hits the field, which to me seems aggro. He has resistance to removal and with all the 2 drop creature removal spells you already have, i think geralf may actually serve you well as a replacement to Gatekeeper of Malakir .

Phyrexian Arena is not too slow for modern. It can be a significant threat. Sign in Blood is good too. It's all personal preference. If your deck intends to kill T4-5 then Sign in Blood is the better choice. If u intend to grind out games then Phyrexian Arena is better, especially as u can run fewer copies.

I do t5 wins. And I prefer using sign in blood compared to the arena

Have u considered running 4x Nantuko Shade ?
He's awesome with black mana ramp. It'll give u a devotion dump and he can swing for brutal numbers.
I would run it MB over the 4x Doom Blade .
As for your SB. I think u could MB 2x Bojuka Bog in place of 2 basic swamps which will free up 2 slots. If u cut the charm down to 1-2 and Creeping Corrosion down to 3. You'll have a few more spaces.
Would add a 2nd Grafdigger's Cage for Pod & how rampid snapcaster is running around.
Torpor Orb will help u VS Twin decks
Ghost Quarter or Fulminator Mage or Rain of Tears + Surgical Extraction will help u out vs Tron

I like Torpor Orb but if I run it, Gary won't trigger as well. He is one of my wincons.
Everyone says Modern is a t3 or t4 win game, but does it go late game like 10 turns and up also?
March 10, 2014 8:42 a.m.
BattleWalrus says... #25
I've only ever seen red burn decks execute t3-t4 wins. I've had t4 win con with Gary destroying my opponents last bit of health, but ussually my games with my black aggro deck last 7-8 turns. So i don't really know what the meta is.

@Magiclover318: That is a fair point since Lilly seems to be ever rising in price. Perhaps you could experiment with Phyrexian Arena for card advantage?
