Hell yea, use Nykthos to pump and swing for massive damage! I'm sure he'll fit in nicely.

Yeah that's what I was thinking! With nykthos, he pumps himself up essentially.

I see why you would want green, but how bout going with red instead?

You could use Lightning Bolt or Terminate instead of Abrupt Decay as removal, and it also allows you to have an intensive mana spell like Rakdos's Return for when you use Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . Not to mention it helps empty out their hand even IF you don't "kill" them with it.

Red can give you instant speed artifact target removal/graveyard hate/ and maybe even a Splinter Twin combo killer in Rakdos Charm out of the sideboard. It would give you more slots to open up for more troublesome matchups

Whipflare is another good sideboard card against aggressive decks as well

You would still have Shatterstorm to replace Creeping Corrosion in the sideboard

Red splash makes no sense.

Red has most of the same issues that black does. By splashing red u give yourself less answers in fact. Abrupt Decay > Terminate

Terminate can't hit Blood Moon Ghostly Prison or Ensnaring Bridge . Red in general has no Enchantment hate. Sure Abrupt Decay can't hit Karn Liberated but Maelstrom Pulse can.

That's what makes the GB/x decks so strong, is their ability to deal with any threat an opponent plays. Not to mention he can eventually upgrade into the most consistent mana base in modern and the strongest creature available (Tarmogoyf )

I like Rakdos's Return but I think most decks would rather play Blightning instead anyway.

Magiclover318 says... #6

I can't see myself getting Tarmogoyf in this deck, he just is way too expensive cashwise anyways.

Yeah I am not gonna be splashing red, I have my deck almost complete and aside from maybe using Maelstrom Pulse and Inquisition of Kozilek , I like the way this deck performs.

Looks brutal +1 from me and good luck in the GP

Might put Phyrexian Obliterator in my merchant deck just for laughs. I mainly play casual though so it could get banned xD

Merchant of Death Have a look =)

Dam wrong deck sorry Merchant of Death

March 19, 2014 6:38 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #9

Yeah its insane. I just get stomped by control decks though. That's all I am worried about.

You have 4 Geth's verdict in both your main and sideboard and the total of any one card can only be 4 (as I'm sure you know :]). Probably moved them in or out of main deck and forgot to remove them elsewhere. Just FYI. Great deck!

March 27, 2014 3 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #11

Oh yeah I always forget to do one of the two lol. Oh well. Thanks CDM! I currently am needed two obliterators, then it's complete :)

Why would you need to worry about the enchantment hate in a "monoblack devotion" deck with a splash? It's not like Blood Moon is going to give you THAT Much problem anyway. Besides, they will probably drop Blood Moon game 2-3 as you are mostly a monocolored deck with a splash.

This is why I used basics in my deck anyway with fetches for instances against Blood Moon

Take a look at the top decks to see what "hate" should be included:

  • Birthing Pod (either kiki pod or melira pod) focuses around an artifact and a bunch of creatures (removal - sweepers are key to stop combos from going off)

  • Splinter Twin (removal stops this from going off more effectively than enchantment hate) You could also use Slaughter Games against a RUG "counter heavy" build if need be

  • Tron...probably the worst matchup for this deck either way but a well timed Geth's Verdict gets rid of Emrakul in either way...splashing red gives him an out to Karn Liberated with Dreadbore for one less total mana than Maelstrom Pulse

  • Affinity: Shatterstorm can replace Creeping Corrosion to make that matchup MUCH easier.

I dont' see why red is such a bad color to go with. Pumping a creature to eat removal seems worse than just dinging them with a burn spell like Rakdos's Return .

It would also be a stretch, but Magiclover318 could even use Anger of the Gods if against pod decks to exile everything so the persist doesn't keep them around

I'm not saying that red is INFINITELY better, I'm just saying that it's worth a look before it gets written off

Magiclover318 says... #13

Yeah I haven't written adding red off, I just don't know, my deck looks so awesome right now.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I brought this to a modern fnm and beat out storm with it, but somehow I lost to Naya zoo. I am not sure how I lost since I have so much creature control. I took third place out of like 15 people so that wasn't too bad.

Tron is my issue, but again I have a lot of creature control, I know they can empty their hand T1 but I am fairly confident that I can handle them.

I would include some land destruction to take down the Urza lands if that's what they rely on. Using ghost quarter isn't bad or tectonic edge

March 28, 2014 1:33 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #15

Yeah I wanna use ghost quarter, I am still obtaining 2x Phyrexian Obliterator, so this isn't complete yet

March 28, 2014 2:23 p.m.

thuzra says... #16

I know it's expensive, but if you can swing any number of Verdant Catacombs you will pretty much be set for life.

March 30, 2014 9:53 p.m.

thuzra says... #17

Also, when did you make the switch to Golgari? I missed that change. Can't say I don't approve, however!

March 30, 2014 9:55 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #18

Yeah they are a lot... haha I haven't even bought the last two obliterators I need :/

I only splashed green for artifact and enchantment removal like Birthing Pod and Pyromancer Ascension

March 31, 2014 12:02 p.m.

thuzra says... #19

Always good, always good. Yeah, black is lacking in hate cards and it sucks a lot, so I understand the sentiment.

March 31, 2014 3:29 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #20

Yeah haha, I love black, but I need to have ways of handling the best decks in modern and black doesn't have those ways.

March 31, 2014 5:38 p.m.

Snow_Lynx says... #21

This deck is full with nice threats, but from my point of view - I play control - it is too reliant on creatures, too slow and too dependent on creature removal.

The thing that saves it the most is the card that takes life out of devotion to black, but what if your creatures get taken out?

For example, against creatureless decks that controls the board, what would you do?

April 7, 2014 12:03 a.m.

Magiclover318 says... #22

Yeah control decks are my downfall. I don't know what to do haha.

April 7, 2014 1:38 p.m.

Snow_Lynx says... #23

Well, Abrupt Decay and Thoughtseize definitely helps against control a bunch, I'd bet. They can disrupt a lot.

April 7, 2014 2:10 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #24

Thoughtseize really is my only disruption against it. Abrupt Decay is there for enchantment and artifact removal. I just find it is a powerhouse in the modern meta currently.

April 7, 2014 2:13 p.m.

dude! don't worry about the results. Keep your head up, the deck is sweet, but can use some improvements. You're really close to an awesome deck!:

add 4x bloodghasts4x gravecrawler4x Putrid Leech

drop the hawks and obliterators, theyre nice but not necessary in a golgari swarm.

you can also include Lotleth trolls perhaps.
