While more of a late game win, Norin the Wary + Worldfire is fun

@Oldneckbeard: Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, that combo doesn't work. Yes, you keep Norin the Wary , but when he attacks, he exiles himself.

Warstorm Surge ? or maybe it's too late game :/

@radway: Yeah, for a long time I played this deck with Warstorm Surge and Primal Forcemage . While it is nice to get rid of opposing creatures, it is too late in the game. This version is faster and doesn't rely on Primal Forcemage to do serious damage.

Genius, I love it. Perhaps more tutors? I feel like that would help. I'm sure there's more abusable ETB effects, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Perhaps some Persist/Undying ones.

@Sna-Kun: Thanks for the suggestions! I want to replace Idyllic Tutor with Enlightened Tutor and cut a card (probably Cathedral Sanctifier ) for another one, if I get my hands on them. Other than that, I have Sylvan Ranger and Ranger of Eos , that should suffice.

Of course, there are tons of ETB triggers. The problem is, the creatures shouldn't cost more than 2 mana, so that I can cast multiple per turn. The creatures with undying/persist in this range don't have ETB effects.

Kitchen Finks does :P

@radway: True. But adding them in would be overkill in terms of lifegain. With Soul Warden and Genesis Chamber out, 10 life per turn is a pretty regular thing.

Hi, looks like a fun deck! Take a look at my boros modern version of a Norin Deck if you like. Its actually pretty competitive. Norin the great and all powerful. I don't have Cloudstone Curio or any of those creatures that trigger effects when they enter the battlefield. It focuses on permanents that trigger effects when another creature ETB (i.e. Norin the Wary ).

I would up your Norin and Champion of the Parish counts to four. Also consider running the other soul sister Soul's Attendant and Ajani's Pridemate . The pridemate gets HUGE, fast! More Ranger of Eos would help too. It gets so many of your key combo creatures.

I would drop Collective Blessing . Its just way too expensive for a deck with 22 lands, plus its your only card over 4 cmc.

@The_Squirrel: Yeah, I know this type lifegain decks, they are pretty strong. The first time I saw Norin, it was in one of those decks.

In this deck, I want to (ab)use ETB trigger. Lifegain is a nice side effect (and one of the best ways to not die), so Soul's Attendant and Ajani's Pridemate (as well as Essence Warden ) are not included.

At first, I ran Norin as a 4-of, but I reduced it to 3, because it was a dead draw too often. And then the focus of the deck shifted away from Norin to ETB triggers in general, so I cut him down to 2.

10 of my 24 (without Purphoros, God of the Forge ) creatures aren't humans, so I won't run the full playset of Champion of the Parish . Sometimes I think even 3 of them is one too many.

Collective Blessing is a remnant of when I ran the deck with Warstorm Surge . It stayed to make Genesis Chamber even better. Thanks to Sylvan Ranger , the mana shouldn't be a problem. But yes, it is more of a fallback plan. Normally, the game should be over turn 5 or 6. Maybe I will drop it for another Ranger of Eos .

Thanks for your suggestions!

This deck would have great synergy with Suture Priest . It's mean with Norin the Wary and Genesis Chamber . Forbidden Orchard would also be a great land to run in here.

Check out my ETB deck, Pain Has An Element Of Blank. There are quite a few cards in there that would work well here.

I feel like Vexing Devil could make a strong appearance in this deck. Especially after the first game, he would be even better, because your opponent would knowingly have to take the 4 damage to prevent you from bouncing him for another ETB trigger.

Let's go a control route maybe?

Or, straight up advantage

  • Kor Skyfisher (2/3 flyer for 2 and a free bounce effect)

  • Inquisitor Exarch (unfortunately your mana base isn't ideal, or else this would be brutal)

  • Nest Invader (more creature to block or just mana ramp. And if you have your Collective Blessing blessing you just got a 5/5 and a 3/4 for 2 mana.Or simply 2 triggers on Aura Shards)

  • Wall of Blossoms is better than Elvish visionary I think. You have a lot of 1/1 but no good blockers I feel. You could also consider adding Wall of Omens . The card draw engine could become insanely brutal

Just a few ideas I had(:

I think you have inspired me to create my own twist on this concept. I grant you my +1, and believe me, I don't up vote decks often. Your deck definitely deserves it!(:

@nosoyyucateco: I run Suture Priest and Forbidden Orchard in my deck A Token on the House, which is pretty similar to your Pain Has An Element Of Blank. Without the protection of Ghostly Prison , I don't want to run them in here.

@Dreno33:

Vexing Devil : Thought about it. But they would just take 4 damage and then it would be in my gy, doing nothing. I'd rather bounce other creatures.
Kor Skyfisher : Seems intriguing. But I need other creatures on the field to play him. Maybe I'll test him as a 1-of.
Inquisitor Exarch : What you said.
Nest Invader : Dismissed it because it doesn't pump Champion of the Parish and other creatures that don't are better. But I don't really like Champion of the Parish in this deck anymore... And it would get a lot more out of Champion of Lambholt and Purphoros, God of the Forge . Definitely going to try it.
Wall of Blossoms : Dismissed it because it did no damage with Warstorm Surge and didn't think about it when I changed the deck. You're absolutely right on that one.
Wall of Omens : No, 4 card drawers have to be enough. I want to do other things than just drawing cards and it's a 2-drop too many (esp. if I replace Champion of the Parish with Nest Invader ).

Thank you both for your suggestions and +1's!

So . . . I created two versions. One focused more around Norin and one focused more around Cloudstone.

Norin's Trampoline

Bugs in the Clouds

I know you are jealous of those names . . . LOL

Anyways, I agree. Champion of the Parish seemed very lackluster to me as well and limits your deck too much on what it is trying to do.

I would add more ETB card draws with other cards that bounce as well to abuse the draw mechanics. That way you hit your key cards more often. That was just my thought process.

I am currently running 8x ETB drawers and feel i could use another playset still. (:

Just decided to switch out Champion of Lambolt for Blade Splicer . I am really excited with this change, haha.

I playtested some of the suggestions and was very satisfied with Nest Invader , Enlightened Tutor and Eternal Witness .

Champion of the Parish , Idyllic Tutor and Collective Blessing had to go.

Useless comment, but perhaps funny. I once played EDH with a guy who used Norin. He had versions in a bunch of languages and every time Norin re-entered it'd be a different one, "Back from his trip to (insert country name)".

The rest of the deck was mono-red chaos cards . . . silly game.

nice deck... sad that Legion's Initiative dont fit with the chamber tokens, nevertheless it would have power here.

@ZwiebelRoyal: This seems like it could be great as a 2-of in this deck. Will test it. Thanks for the suggestion!
