It turns on Bloodghast and Fatal Push. It also lets you shuffle if you don't like the top card you see with Vampire Nocturnus.

Mogis's Marauder could be a great finisher in a boardstall. Pithing Needle and Illness in the Ranks seem like options for the sideboard.
Suprised to see no Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet here. The card is great against many creature based decks and even helps against Wurmcoil Engine and Arcbound Ravager (no tokens / modular counters upon death) which seem like problematic cards for you.

+1 for the combos
but a damn expensive deck, though.
- Get a better name for this deck
- A good thing to do would be to suggest alternative fetch lands to make the deck more "accessible" :)

The fetches are kinda necessary to turn on Fatal Push and Bloodghast, unfortunately. There are many cheaper alternatives, but the build would suffer for them. As for names, I'm kinda stuck thinking of something new that hasn't been tried before.

I have the fetches diversified to keep the opponent guessing (Polluted Delta into Snow Covered Swamp then Viscera Seer... oh my god, what is this??????), but really you can use any you have that are keyed to black.

if youre looking for some early cards Gnarled Scarhide and Bloodsoaked Champion have always been cards I've liked =)

This deck has a good idea, but is running some weird cards. Gifted Aetherborn has no place in modern. As does Viscera Seer with just about no synergy to go with it. There needs to be some amount of Inquisition of Kozilek here, whether it be replacing some copies of TS or not. Collective Brutality is a great card that almost definitely deserves a spot here. Yahenni's Expertise is a new card that could be interesting here, as it into a Lili is basically game-winning.

Im curious as to why bovine says gifted aetherborn has no place in a black modern devotion deck, its double black, and pretty powerful at 2/3 deathtouch lifelink. Whats your beef bovine?
February 8, 2017 11:04 a.m.
I added in Bloodsoaked Champion. The Viscera Seer was a holdover from when this deck was based on Tom Ross's vampire brew. The champ seems good with Liliana of the Veil.
I think the Gifted Aetherborn fits here, similar decks in the past have used Vampire Nighthawk and the matchups where you want them such as Burn or Zoo hurt more from it coming down a turn earlier. The Grey Merchant of Asphodel is some solid lifegain, but it's too slow against Burn.
February 8, 2017 11:10 a.m.
Gifted Aetherborn dies to bolt. You won't want it against burn.
February 8, 2017 11:19 a.m.
I guess. That still saves 3 life though. Sideboard options are pretty limited in a mono colored deck. There's not much to use there besides something like Sun Droplet, and the Aetherborn's double black casting cost synergizes with Grey Merchant.

If you're worried about burn specifically, Collective Brutality just wrecks it a good portion of the time, as all 3 modes are useful in the matchup.

I agree on Collective Brutality. It can also be useful against Infect: You really need to interact quickly with that deck, and Brutality allows you to get two nice effects for just 2 mana.

As I also play Mono-black devotion. I gotta say I do like this deck (+1), so I only have a few suggestions.
Since you are running a bunch of fetch lands, I'd try to experiment with putting some Overgrown Tombs into the deck, this would allow you to play Back to Nature and/or Maelstrom Pulse and cards like in the sideboard to help out against decks like Ad Nausseum, I haven't played much against the deck, but I feel getting rid of Leyline of Sanctity and Phyrexian Unlife is very relevent.
Regardless whether or not you try out number 1, I'd suggest putting in either Damnation or Mutilate into the sideboard as at least a one-of, as decks like Elves and Affinity can kill you really quickly, and with a bunch of creatures that can't block, you might not be able to live long enough to slam Obliterator.
I'm unsure about Bloodsoaked Champion as it is exactly what it is, a bad bloodghast. I'm amazed that you didn't put Gifted Aetherborn into the main, imo it should replace champion, as anybody who says "it's bad, cuz it dies to bolt" has never played mono-black competitively, as Vampire Nighthawk is one of the best cards in mono black decks, and Gifted is just -1 cmc for cutting Flying, which just makes better on curve imo.
Has Nykthos been successful for you? Arena can be sweet with Obliterator out, just doesn't work without an Urborg. I'd probably up the amount of Urborgs to 2, as you don't want to get stuck with a colorless mana source.
(Meta Dependent) Have you tried out Fulminator Mage? It works great against most decks in the format, but is only relevent against decks like Tron or Scaepshift. Phyrexian Crusader can also be a roadblack against decks like Burn. Liliana, the Last Hope is super sweet as a one or two of (in the main, usually replaces 1 for 1 with veil), as she can take apart decks that play Lingering Souls, Young Pyromancer, etc. She can also dig you into more bloodghasts.

Agree with everything SD just said! I like gifted aetherborn so much i just put 2 in my main deck for my RB vamps

TeamSDBags gifted aetherborn is not a bad card itself, it just absolutely sucks in the burn mu.

Well, thats what sideboards are for, if youre running mono black and worried about what happens when your little guys get bolted, then run dash hopes, seriously doubt someone will pay 5 life to bolt an aetherborn. And if they do put it in the graveyard run kalastria highborn, make em lose 2 life for it and youll gain two life on top of what you got in for beats. If you know your meta then you know how to adjust to it.

Burn isn't a great matchup for Mono-Black, as many people compare decks like Mono-black midrange to bad jund, and jund itself suffers against burn. (modern is a rock paper scissors format for a reason, there is an answer for EVERYTHING) I mean think about it, Bloodghast, Bloodsoaked Champion, Gatekeeper of Malakir, and Geralf's Messenger are ALL bad against burn, as Eidolon of the Great Revel punishes you for playing any and all of these creatures, and most of them can't block effectively (or at all) against burn. The only real chance a mono-black deck has against burn is to play Whip of Erebos, which wouldn't be a bad one or two of for the sideboard in this deck, as you can grind out value with Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

What's the point of fetch lands here?
