Nothing Truly Dies

Commander / EDH*

Maybeboard

Take-2 on my Mikaeus deck. Decided this time to narrow the focus of the deck further on the active aspect of Undying (i.e. things coming and going from the board). This deck takes advantage of infinitely looping graveyard shenanigans with Persist, Undying, removing counters, sacrificing creatures and ETB effects.

So, the meat of this deck is how it interacts with death and ETB, obviously. Undying creatures can be sprinkled with Persist (or vise-versa), or even have their corresponding counters removed to basically make them immortal. Also, these creatures can bypass "cannot regenerate" effects such as Damnation, so boardwipes are rendered almost useless.

Combine that quality with a combo-centric shell and you get one helluva mono-black deck. Things like Altar of Dementia + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Tatterkite create an infinite Mill, or Cauldron of Souls + Geralf's Messenger with any of the various sacrifice outlets in the deck can cause infinite damage.

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

Overall the intention is just to gain resources or advantage through movement. This deck, even if it doesn't seem like it on first glance, is pretty active. There will be a lot of moving cards in and out of the battlefield, with a little control sprinkled in just in case someone drops something scary before we have any combo pieces in place.

Of course you also have the option to attack. This deck's got some goodstuff in it as well, such as Wurmcoil Engine and Massacre Wurm, both of which are big scary bodies with huge synergy in this deck. Taking Wurmcoil Engine for example, just with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Wurmcoil Engine you can have a giant, undying worm that splits itself twice, filling your board with 3/3 worms that also get the Undying perk!

Suddenly, destroying your creatures doesn't sound so appealing to your enemies, right? Not even sacrificing them would work, and having a pillowfort up wouldn't do a whole lot except against the bigger beaters anyways.

The fact that this deck has a few advantages over Stax is purely coincidental, I assure you all. I hadn't even heard of Stax until after I began working on this deck, as I used to play Modern exclusively.

Anyways, I hope ya'll enjoy running this mono-black monstrosity as much as I will in, like, five month's time! This deck is rather expensive, and I'm broke AF. . .
