Patch 2.3

I had recently been building a Mono Vampire "Heritage" deck for the past few months and was feeling like there wasn't much going on with it, the deck felt very dull and clunky during playtesting and I just wasn't really vibing with me.

I had been talking about a desire to build a Ringwraith deck since before the spoils even dropped for LTR, and as soon as I saw the cards for the Witch-King and Nazgûl, I knew that I had the perfect build around it.

Thus far in playtesting I am very much enjoying the ramping ability both of innate monoblack as well as the incredible Nazgul abilities to add counters when the ring tempts you. It's very easy to get things rolling big if you have a turn2 Call of the Ring Followed by T3 and T4 Nazgûl, throwing out the Witch-King on 5; by that time, your first t3 Nazgûl will be a 5/6 Deathtouch that doubles as a fully loaded Ring-Bearer!

With version 2.0, the title update means switching the deck's entire focus from a clunky pseudo-aristocrats "I want to do all the black things" focus into a primarily Reanimator playstyle. Plenty of card draw and milling effects will get us the graveyard we want, and everytime we reanimate our Nazgul we can pump up the Witch-King, bringing with him a decent win condition that can throw down some heavy punches. Other big threats like Grave Titan, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, and Archon of Cruelty will keep opponents sweating as we bring them back time and time again.

One day I'd love to get a serialized Sol Ring (Human) in the deck, but at $1600 as of 8.22.23, I don't think there's a shot at that for quite some time unless there's a major shift in my financial security... After all, 1600 is nearly 3 HP Dual Lands. That said, I'm happy to own a non-serialized Human ring, and I'm glad to be able to include it in this deck. My Witch-king deck has been a labor of love over the summer of 2023 and I'm happy to have it started in September, just about the same time of the year the Nine left Minas Morgul after Gollum uttered the infamous words, "Shire, Baggins!"

The deck has enough card draw built in with things like Vilis Blood Broker, Palantir of Orthanc and The One Ring that it seems running Necropotence is more of a disadvantage than a power move. For BBB, I get to drain life and exile cards from my hand, cards that I'd much prefer to be in the graveyard. It can be quite explosive, but I think it's more appropriate to run another solid reanimator card with Victimize than to have the legend of a card in the deck.

It's a heartfelt loss, but we must stick to our guns: "Power, at any cost."
