Nelstone i just had a thought, how about Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip? Good one drop and can quickly become a Planeswalker :)

Thought I'd give an update on my version of the deck, very similar to this. Decklist here

Our game day was 5 rounds of Swiss, then top 8. I went 5-0 with this deck, and was the only undefeated player out of 18. I beat Abzan midrange, 2x Eldrazi ramp, Jeskai midrange and Atarka Red.

Top 8, I went in as top seed and got paired with Abzan midrange again. A bad matchup for us I think. I managed to grind out a 2-1 win against him in round 1 of Swiss.

Game 1 I steamrolled him getting 2 equipped Captain's Claws and 2 equipped Masterworks, along with a Weapons Trainer.

Game 2 he boards in 4 ( ! ) Natural State and 2 Hallowed Moonlight. He drew all 4 Natural States and answered any equipment I had. I get him down to 3 life but he manages to get a Dragonlord Dromoka to stick and flies over me for lethal.

Game 3 he keeps a hand consisting of 3 land, 2 Whisperwood Elemental, 1 Dragonlord Dromoka and 1 Warden of the First Tree. I start strong, but he naturally draws into 3 of his 4 Abzan Charms and manages to stall the board enough for him to drop both Whisperwoods and 2 Siege Rhinos. At 4 life, he stabilised and I couldn't punch through, as I did not draw any of my removal. Out I go in 5th place. I don't feel like the result did the deck justice, it was the talk of the game store.

In hindsight I might have found time to source 2 Firemantle Mages as I believe this would have helped me to punch through the Abzan wall of manifests. But overall, I was happy with how the deck performed.

A few more thoughts.

Outnumber was amazing. I highly recommend considering it. I managed to kill, among other things, a Siege Rhino twice, 2 Whisperwood Elementals, a Reality Smasher... all for 1 lousy red mana. Pretty ridiculous.

Make a Stand was underwhelming. Keeping 3 mana up to protect your dudes is not what you want to do with this deck, and it doesn't even protect against really annoying stuff like Flaying Tendrils, Languish, exile effects like Silkwrap or Complete Disregard, or any effects that force you to sacrifice. The only time I used it was to protect my board against a Kozilek's Return, and yes, it did mean a huge tempo swing, but that was one isolated incident out of 20+ games today. On the contrary, Feat of Resistance was amazing. Saved my guys more times than I can count.

I was boarding Bone Saw out a lot. Make of that what you will, I am not sure about the card now I've played with the deck a lot.

I've been playing this deck alot recently

Firemantle Mage has been doing next to nothing for me, out of the like 40+ games I've played, I think it BARELY helped me attack through some guys, but even that wasn't enough. I don't think Firemantle Mage is right for this deck.

Oh yea and instead of running Expedition Envoy I run Kor Bladewhirl x4 instead and it works so much better, because having 5/2 First Strikers is pretty ridiculous.

I've put this deck together and I think it is just a ton of fun. I'd like to keep playing it, or at least a version of it, for a good long while. I'll eventually make tweaks to fit my playstyle and local meta if necessary, but I think the foundation here is largely solid.

The only thing I'm wondering is if you have something in mind to replace Valorous Stance when it rotates out in a couple months. I'm relatively new to Magic, so I don't know if there's something from the other sets in Standard that may slide right in and do the same (or similar) job or not. Will you just slot Make a Stand back into main or hope that something in Shadows over Innistrad fills the gap?

Storm46,

Sorry to hear you got rekt with the deck at FNM. The deck really needs a nut draw or something close to take a game. I'm finding it's super important to be on the play game 1. I'm experimenting with another version of the deck that's meant to have some more late-game presence: Oath of the Well Equipped Boros Allies Tester. I'm on the fence about it, as you really need interaction in Standard. I'm still testing.

Klavs,

Congrats on the success with your variant! Really good to hear. Great rundown. I'll take Outnumber and Feat of Resistance into consideration. I may take Make a Stand out of the sideboard and replace it with Feat of Resistance.

I've considered dropping Bone Saw altogether, but I do like that it combos cheaply with Weapons Trainer.

Shinjima and peldriver,

Firemantle Mage has provided me another method of evasion at key times in many matches. Paired with Captain's Claws on an attacker, it has made blocking very difficult. I'll continue to test to make sure it's the right card for the deck.

Woodyrson,

When it comes to cards that are going to rotate, it's always a wait and see scenario. Valorous Stance is a multifaceted card for only two mana that really cannot be replaced by Make a Stand. We'll see if there will be a direct replacement once the SOI spoilers come out. Center Soul from Dragons of Tarkir covers part of it, but you lose out on the removal aspect. Time will tell.

Storm46, regarding Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip, I think he's better suited to be a part of a pure white weenie deck, such as the Savannah Lions deck in this mtggoldfish.com Budget Decks article.

Pacifism vs Silkwrap.I feel Pacifism is kinda of better then Silkwrap in a good bit of scenarios.First off it does just about the same thing but the major difference is that one stays on the field and the other leaves if its mana cost is 3 or less. I can really only see a couple of scenarios were Silkwrap is better then Pacifism. For mana and for cards that have triggered ability's are most likely the two annoying things that Pacifism cant deal with.Maybe have Pacifism a side board?

Have you tried sigil of valor?

Sorry on phone can't link cards

Moomoomooo,

I had both Silkwrap and Pacifism in the very first version of this deck. You're right on, mana and triggered abilities are still available with Pacifism, which is the main reason I didn't stick with it. If I had something just taking up space in my sideboard, I'd include Pacifism there, but I don't.

Tyrantr45,

I have tried Sigil of Valor. I found it to be too restrictive and too conditional. It's great if just one creature is attacking, but that isn't the primary focus of this deck. Thus, it loses value.

I also replaced silkwrap to pacifism and in some matches I blocked on big eldrazi Thought-Knot Seer Reality Smasher

for me it is necessary that the captain's claws on both the ground before the Thought-Knot Seer and as soon as possible in general

Captain's Claws is essential to the entire deck of course. I find I win more games when I have 1 or 2 Claws out, and lose alot more when I don't get the Claws.

There is one card alot of people are missing out on, it's called Devour in Flames and I don't care what anyone thinks, but this card is amazing and I'm goin to keep using it. There's been so many times where I can hit a planeswalker, and it's strictly better than Roast because the thing that really hurts our deck is flying creatures. Yes it's 3 CMC, but on turns where you haven't played a land it's really only 2 CMC. The ability to do 5 damage to ANY creature OR planeswalker is just nuts. And planeswalkers really hurt our deck, especially the mass token producing ones that clog up the board with tiny blockers that we can't get by.

I was playing with 3x Devour in Flames in the sideboard, but I took out the Firemantle Mage and 1 Bone Saw, and now playing 3x in the mainboard. Honestly the card does wonders.

Anyways just thought I'd put that in there. Also I run 1x Sea Gate Wreckage as I find it helps late game, after you've dumped your entire hand on the board (which is easy to do with this deck).

I have two Gideon, Ally of Zendikar I want to put in the deck. What cards should I replace and how many Plains do I need to add?

February 22, 2016 4:57 p.m.

Nelstone says... #18

If I were to add Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, I'd run three and add one more Plains. I'd drop one Stoneforge Masterwork, one Bone Saw, one Valorous Stance and one Expedition Envoy.

Keeping mana and literal costs in mind I have 3 ideas for you.

One is to replace Silkwrap for a Break Through the Line. The ability for this to overload your creatures, and more easily proc renown, is reason enough to run it.

The second is an alternative to the above of entirely dropping Relic Seeker for Zada's Commando. You can't go to wrong replacing uncertain utility with definite aggression.

The last one you'll probably be hesitant to go for but I'd look into Ghirapur AEther Grid replacing probably Silkwrap. You do lose a fast removal but you should still easily be able to deal with the small creatures Silkwrap is meant to deal with anyway.

Also, "No one has enough artifcat removal"?

I Am playing a more mid-range version of this deck which includes Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Chandra, Flamecaller works really well, especially using Oath of Gideon to allow the use of Gideon's ultimate as soon as you cast him.

Woodyrson says... #21

Voxhorn I was thinking about putting some Gideon, Ally of Zendikar in my version of this deck as well. I'm just not sure how I should construct the deck to work well that way. Do you have a decklist of what exactly you're running with the Gideon and Chandra? I'd be interested in seeing that.
