Maybeboard


I've changed this deck into a "go wide" white weenie build. Weenies with multiple keyword abilities share their expertise with their token counterparts. Please provide feedback and upvote if you like it!

The deck uses equipment, weenies, and angels to spread keyword abilities around the team. I have found the most important abilities to be flying, vigilance, double strike, and haste. They are the abilities that ensure enough damage gets through and, in the case of vigilance, that you don't leave yourself vulnerable after attacking. Flying, vigilance, and double strike are easy in White. Haste is more difficult so equipment becomes important for these abilities.

Overall I've valued creatures over equipment. The deck needs a constant stream of bodies to keep up the pressure. Equipment is mostly there to fill in the gaps that White struggles with: trample, haste, ramp and card draw.

I had previously underestimated the importance of lifelink in this deck. Sure, gaining life isn't going to win you the game with this deck. However, life gain helps buy the deck valuable time. It can put you out of reach for being killed as you set up your army. I've increased the amount of lifegain in the deck and it's helped quite a bit.

The breakdown of number of cards with each ability follows:

Flying: 17

White creature-based decks in Commander suffer from vulnerability to boardwipes and inconsistency due to weak card draw. I've increased the number of reanimation, protection, and tutoring spells to make up for these weaknesses.

Tutors: Recruiter of the Guard, Stoneforge Mystic, Enlightened Tutor, and Steelshaper's Gift help Odric finds the tools he needs for his army. Mask of Memory and Skullclamp are excellent card draw options in weenie creature decks so I'm often finding them when I need gas. For ramp I'm typically looking for Sword of the Animist. Recruiter of the Guard searches for whichever keywords I'm needing in the moment. Skyhunter Skirmisher and Aven Sunstriker are the two I'm looking for most often, offering Double Strike and Flying. Sometimes I'm looking for hatebears Hushbringer or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or protection with Selfless Spirit.

Protection: Flawless Maneuver, Guardian of Faith, Teferi's Protection, and Selfless Spirit all offer boardwipe protection.

Reanimation: White has become increasingly effective at reanimating weenies. Sevinne's Reclamation, The Restoration of Eiganjo  , Sun Titan, and Emeria, The Sky Ruin all help Odric bring back his fallen comrades.

The deck typically wins through repeated bashing with flying, vigilance, trample, double strike creatures. This is an "honest" deck in that there are no real combo shenanigans. If you like winning MTG the old-fashioned way, this is the deck for you.

Odric himself can surprise people with commander damage wins. Buffing him and having any double strike creature on the field can lead to quick commander damage wins.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is another obvious win condition especially when she is given double strike and/or trample.

Updates Add

This Odric deck has had some very helpful additions over the past while.

Crystalline Giant grants the team whichever keyword is needed in the moment. It's too bad it can't grant Haste, but the other keywords are great.

Tome of Legends is a cheap source of card draw that is easy to activate with Odric consistently attacking. It replaces The Immortal Sun which was just too slow at 6 CMC.

Hushbringer and Archon of Emeria are solid hate bears which replace Vryn Wingmare and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben which weren't impactful enough a lot of the time.

Mangara, the Diplomat finally gives White some solid card draw and replaces Bygone Bishop which was a bit too conditional

Heraldic Banner offers a nice little pump in a deck that is all about attacking.

Idol of Endurance is a cheap reanimation spell for weenies, which this deck has tons of.

Emeria's Call  Flip is the one Zendkiar MDFC I included as I like it's dual purpose of putting out bodies while protecting the rest of the team.

Another change I've made is including a couple more tutors after their prices dropped with reprints, Stoneforge Mystic and Recruiter of the Guard. The haste enablers in the deck are all equipment and Mask of Memory and Skullclamp are among the best card draw spells. Stoneforge Mystic ensures we can access these when necessary. Recruiter tutors up whichever vital keyword we're needing in the moment.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope replaces Akroma, Angel of Wrath as the top end 8 CMC creature. I really like Akroma's haste but often I find I want Avacyn's indestructible protection.
