Of Monsters and Men: Rhys the Redeemed | *PRIMER*

Commander / EDH* Elves GW (Selesnya) Infinite Combo Primer Ramp Tokens

Andulus

Working on the description. As an little appetiser, some short gimmicks for this deck:

This is my favourite EDH deck. It is a powerful token- and elf-tribal-deck, with a lot of huge, really impactful cards inside and LOADS of synergies. The deck is just so much fun to navigate and play and even capable to win on turn three (for the more competitive players out there).

Though Rhys himself is not a competitive duel commander, in multiplayer, you will find yourself beeing the archenemy most of the times, due to the insane boardstate he likes to come up with.

My take on Rhys the Redeemd is balanced between theme orientated, fun-to-play and beeing competitive. I like to have fun games, so stax are not the solution, especially in my playgroup. On the other hand I´d like the game to end at some point and I also want to see a powerful if not competitive deck. So infinte combos are included, but you need to work your way towards them (not a one card and your commander infinite combo). For more competitive solutions scroll down and check the panels "stax brew" or "combo brew", cause I've been through them all.

Check out all the fantastic synergies in the provided Overview!

  • massive, if not the best ramp even possible (Elves!)
  • tap and untap synergies that can be exploited heavily
  • toolbox-mechanics, making it possible to suit any situation
  • insane boardstate power
  • classic MTG beatdown tactics - nostalgia at it's best!
  • combo win and other options to close the game (Infect,...)
  • great card draw, even though we play Selesnya

You should not play this deck if:

  • you hate to be the archenemy
  • you do not like beat-them-down tactics or token themed decks
  • you are scared to not run blue, cause you have no counterspells
  • you do not like creature-based ramp due to it`s fragility

Strengths:

Tempo through insane ramp

Defense through chump blockers such as tokens

Reactivity and flexibility through toolbox mechanics

Value through extreme board presence and synergies

Explosive turns

Weaknesses:

Board Wipes (Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge)

Early game disruption

Mana intensive

Dependend on support cards

Priest of Titania/Elvish Archdruid + Staff of Domination (+ Rhys the Redeemed)

We need 5 elf creatures out (Rhys, Titania and the Archdruid count as elfs!) to start this combo and if there is no Counterspell waiting, we will win the game. Just create countless mana by tapping and untapping Priest of Titania/Elvish Archdruid with Staff of Domination. Then we can draw the whole deck to play Akroma's Memorial, all creatures then have haste. Then just play Rhys to create infinite tokens and swing for the win. If there are nasty enchantments or artifacts on the battlefield hindering you to attack or win, just play Aura Shards to get rid of them. Do not forget to make use of all the great tutors here to get the combo going, if possible.

Earthcraft + Rhys the Redeemed + Staff of Domination

This one goes infinite as well, but you need to have enough tokens on the board or enough mana accessable to abuse Rhys' second ability.

Earthcraft + Fetch Lands (Marsh Flats)

Tutor Basics to make full use of Earthcraft! And yes, Fetch lands of all colours are allowed, cause they do not have any colour identity.

Aura Shards + Martial Coup

Destroy everything of your opponents (Creatures, Enchantments and Artifacts) and get yourself some tokens.

Weathered Wayfarer + Gaea's Cradle

Ramp it up a little more! Perfect synergy here, cause Weathered Wayfarer comes as a creature instead of Expedition Map or something else and the cradle makes use of it!

Rhys the Redeemed + Seedborn Muse

One of our key synergies. We got a lot to do during our opponents turns, not only with Rhys. Get the Muse with one of the many tutors and build up an army ready to end the game next turn your on!

Creature spawn (eg. Dwynen's Elite) + creature based ramp (eg. Growing Rites of Itlimoc or Cryptolith Rite)

Mirari's Wake/Mana Reflection + Earthcraft

Elvish Guidance on a basic land + Earthcraft

many more to find
