Thanks!

I know, it started out as MBC but ended up fitting more of a rock deck shell. I consider both Deathrite Shaman and Abrupt Decay black cards at heart. I feel pretty much any black deck will run faster and smoother with the addition of Deathrite Shaman and fetches. Abrupt Decay is kick ass cheap removal. It answers so much. Typically an auto include as well because it allows u to utilize G from Overgrown Tomb s which are in the deck, to run an additional fetch to start with. Though... I've learned DS's G ability can win u the game.

Maelstrom Pulse wasn't on the sideboard until I play tested vs a token deck. ...and Korlash, Heir to Blackblade fills the roll of a weaker Thrun, the Last Troll .

If I had more room, I would add in a few Vault Skirge which usually gives edge vs other Mono-BLCK decks. That pack things like Go for the Throat Especially paired with Lashwrithe

I might add some more direct removal like Go for the Throat and Hero's Downfall , and maybe Mutilate as well

APPLE01DOJ says... #3

well I have Maelstrom Pulse on the sideboard but during play tests, I've never once felt I needed more removal. The deck is very aggressive and often times Lilly's -2 or a Smallpox will hit exactly what I want because it's the only thing on the board. ...then Surgical Extraction takes care of it for good. Abrupt Decay typically ends up being used for things like an Oblivion Ring being placed on Phyrexian Obliterator more so than creature removal.

I do think that Korlash, Heir to Blackblade just isn't as good as I want him to be and will probably replace with 2x Damnation (non-budget mutilate!)

Instead of Sign in Blood , how about Read the Bones ?

APPLE01DOJ says... #5

3cmc is too much if it wasn't I would probably run Phyrexian Arena instead. ...but I really like the way Sign in Blood works and the ability to hit the opponent if need be. The scry 1 effect is not worth the extra mana and loss of targeting IMO.

October 1, 2013 9:39 p.m.

TheMagicPeo says... #6

It is Scry 2. And personally I prefer the potential card advantage. I know I've use Sign in Blood and drew a couple lands and didn't need them. But Sign in Blood is still a good card nonetheless. I had mentioned it just in case you weren't aware of the card since it just came out

Read the Bones is a lot better in decks that are multiple colors, but in mono black they're equal, it's just personal preference. And my preference is to Read the Bones .

APPLE01DOJ says... #7

lol no way, Read the Bones may be awesome in standard but this is a Smallpox deck. Getting 2 extra lands isn't a bad thing. If I was going to make a switch, it would be to Dark Confidant or Phyrexian Arena . 3 mana for 2 cards is too slow when I can spend that same mana and get an extra card every turn.

I did however consider running Reaper of the Wilds in my standard deck for the scry effect. 50 #'s of Grade A Beef -Golgari- Standard I may consider running some Read the Bones for the sideboard in that deck in place of Underworld Connections .

@TheMagicPeo: APPLE01DOJ is right, the 3 CMC on Read the Bones makes it too slow for Modern in this deck. Night's Whisper is much easier to play in a deck with multiple colors.

Turn three is when combo starts getting ready to go off or control plays huge bombs (like Karn Liberated or Liliana of the Veil ). Aggro is looking to swing for lethal the next turn. Tapping out to draw two cards may not be the best idea, not when you can keep mana up for instant speed removal or just drop a threat.

TheMagicPeo says... #9

I completely understand. And I wasn't even aware of Night's Whisper , that is pretty good. Read the Bones is very good in a format as slow as standard. If you do need a certain card, is does dig a little deeper, but in most circumstances it will be too slow, I do understand this

Yeah we definitely have the most disgusting modern rocks on this site. Its a super powerful archetype. I think the reason more people dont build it is because they think they need bobs and goyfs, which is not the case at all. I love black, not just in magic, and I couldnt make a deck that better embodies me if I tried. Some times I feel bad running it because people scoop pretty frequently. You go to FNM with this?

No because I'm still buying the fetches ...but after that I still have the obstacle of living in the middle of nowhere, wish I had a LGS to go to. I live in the mountains so it's like an hour+ drive. Once I own all the fetches thou... hell yea I'm going to be traveling to play this thing. I play test it on here vs decks constantly, it's fun to play, and utterly brutal.

Hey, how about Gray Merchant of Asphodel ? With all of the black in Geralf's Messenger and Phyrexian Obliterator , it can be pretty good. I run it in my deck, (Almost) Mono Black Midrange

get out of here with that devotion nonsense. :D

I think your deck is really solid but would be better if u just completely de-theros'd it. (not counting Thoughtseize ) without the theros cards it would be even stronger. Read above for the arguments on Read the Bones . Erebos is an awesome 4 drop but more of a win-more card. As to get him into useful form you would assume u have an obliterator or something like that already on the board. Both Desecration Demon and Abyssal Persecutor are a more effective 4 drop.

Does Tectonic Edge Hurt Your Ability to Cast Phyrexian Obliterator?

October 16, 2013 7:48 a.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #16

It can, but hasn't been much of an issue. Usually between the fetches, Deathrite Shaman , and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth I have the mana I need for Obliterator.

The issue the edges do cause though, is occasionally getting in the way of a T2 smallpox.

I think the deck looks good as is. If you have issues with consistency (not that I would assume so) you could swap Sign in Blood for Read the Bones although the extra CMC seems like it would be worse for Modern than it is for Standard.

How is the Tectonic Edge 's working out for you?

Otherwise no suggestions as of yet, but I'll keep an eye out for things that would benefit this deck; great job on it!

APPLE01DOJ says... #24

Love the tech edges and mages & Rain of Tears (in my other deck) People freaking hate those cards and I often here "Didn't realize you were going to attack my mana base". lol. I use the surgical extractions to eat up their manlands, fetches & shocks as well.

did you test the deck already in a tourney against tier 1 decks? how about RDW matchup? the deck is very suicidal, I would side in white leylines
