I was taking a stroll in the field, smelling all the lovely flowers when suddenly...

Hello and welcome to another stupid casual deck, this time featuring the lovely Hans Eriksson!

Hans is not a typical guy and so this isn't your typical GRUUL SMASH deck ;)

You will need to get Hans in the fire of action to be able to cheat big creatures into play and smack your opponents to death with them... but at the same time, you will need to protect your Commander and also alter the top of your deck.

If you think all of this is too much of a challenge for you then go away, you weakling. Return play with your Korvold and Kenrith decks designed for and by babies and let the real players figure this shit out.

For those of you brave lads that stayed, let's jump into the details of the deck step-by-step:

The plan for this deck is highly dependent on our Commander so we will need to get it into play pretty much as soon as we can.

I say "pretty much as soon as we can" because before having the mana to cast Hans Eriksson, I highly suggest that you start establishing some protection and/or top manipulation. Most of the time this will help you have a more robust game plan.

Sadly our Commander Hans Eriksson has the bad habit of dying really easily to its own effect...

Therefore we will need to find ways to keep him alive or at least avoid too much lethal action.

The deck contains a neat protection package which contains:

And that protection is also doubled with a small recursion ensemble in case things go REAL bad:

Now that Hans is over for dinner and that you know how to protect him, we should start looking into what the future has in store for him.

And from what I understand things aren't looking good for Hans. All I see is... BIG MONSTERS!

To be able to see what I see use those cards:

  • Brutalizer Exarch > To put a big creature of your choice on top of your deck.

  • Radha, Heart of Keld > To check if it's a good idea that Hans swings right now and maybe play a land from the top and verify again.

  • Temple of Abandon > To Scry and therefore verify if you have a chance to hit or a way to remove a whiff from the top of your deck.

  • Zhalfirin Void > Also to Scry.

  • Brainstone > Brainstorm but for a Gruul deck? Yes, please! You can put some big creatures from your hand on top of your library and rearrange the top to fit with what you need right now before Hans swings, that can't be more perfect.

  • Conch Horn > A little less powerful Brainstone but with a cooler art.

  • Crystal Ball > To Scry, but deeper this time.

  • Druidic Satchel > Check the top and get some reward for it.

  • Explorer's Scope > To check the top whenever Hans swings and grab a land to prevent a whiff and sometimes score a big monster for Hans in the same process.

  • Mystic Forge > Check the top, maybe play the top, or remove the top in bad situations.

  • Scroll Rack > Rearrange both your hand and the top of your deck at the same time. On top of that, you can do this on each turn!

  • Cream of the Crop > Whenever a big monster enters the battlefield you will be able to rearrange the top of your deck for the next swing, your next draw, or your next turn.

  • Once and Future > Set up the next swing by putting something that already died back on top ready to be cheated out again!

  • Reclaim > Same thing as the previous card, but for a single mana baby.

  • Doors of Durin > This is basically like having a second Hans on the board! You can organize the top of the deck for a double Hans trigger on each attack and sometimes get other benefits from it.

Now that Hans has eaten, that he is protected, and that you've consulted the cards to determine Hans future, it is time to make him run for his life.

Swing with it.

Repeat this, but each time with more and more BIG MONSTERS until all your opponents are dead!

Sometimes, Hans Eriksson might have died too many times or maybe you can't count on him anymore.

But stress not, because you have other ways to cheat BIG MONSTERS into play.

Welcome to your first backup plan:

Traditional cheating

All of those cards will help you cheat cards from your hand or the top of your deck.

Transmogrification BAAAABY!:

Those cards will allow you to transform one of your things into another thing that will be cheated into play.

Sometimes, all that Hans needs in life is a little Vigor to fight through the monsters that run after him and emerge as buffed as possible.

Trust me. Nobody will see it coming or even believe it when you Voltron-killed them with a 21+ power Hans Eriksson!

What hand to keep

Try to not keep a hand composed of only creatures and lands. Try to have at least some protection, top-manipulation, or ramp instead of creatures.

Because with this Commander, you want to cheat those creatures into play from the top of your deck instead of having them stuck in your hand or drawing them.

Activated abilities are your friend

This deck has a lot of activated abilities found on creatures, enchantments, artifacts, and even lands.

Those will help you when your hands are full of creatures that you can't cast or that you are stuck only with lands.

Or in the best situation, it is when you have my favorite card from this deck on the battlefield: Fires of Invention. With it, you can play your big creatures (for free!) and then use the mana left and put it into all of your abilities! It's basically like doubling or even tripling your mana since Fires of Invention allow you to cast 2 spells for free!

Don't sleep on the shuffle

Any card in the deck that can shuffle your library is really good without you even knowing it. It's because it can help you reset the top of your deck to your advantage with some chance!

Sometimes it is good practice to not use an Evolving Wilds right away and wait to use it with Hans out for a perfect synergy.

Cheating a God

If you ever cheat one of your Theros Gods into play, if you don't have the correct devotion it won't fight Hans (and also not attack) so keep that in mind. You never know, but it might come in handy sometimes.
