Oh, Ratigan...Oh, Ratigan...

Two seconds held between each drop, drip...drip...drip. The corridor was dark, only lit by the street light pouring from the small holes within the sewage lids above. As the water leaking from the ceiling gravitated towards the edge of the grimy stone, it gathered mass until gravity pulled it to the ground. As the liquid smacked against the wet floor the sound echoed through the halls, drip drip drip...drip drip drip...drip drip drip. "Welcome lad, to Ravnica's shit hole. Ain't nobody that would find comfort here but those rotten Golgari. And serves them well, a bunch of freaks they are." The old voice was thick from a lifetime of smoking. "I know it's your first day and you probably weren't expectin' to dirty your brand new uniform but it comes with the territory." The old man looked down with a smug grin on his face as the new recruit gazed down at the muck with an exasperated look on his face. "These tunnels sure as hell won't clean themselves, and besides, you'll make good money. So take this lantern and sack and head down that way. Remember, any trash and non-biological shit that won't break down naturally needs to be removed. The corridor circles around and I'll meet you on the other side. Keep an eye out for rats, they've been known to grow huge down here!" The elder man walked away laughing and eventually broke into a raspy cough. The corridor grew darker as he ventured further around the bend and soon the recruit was alone with the dripping and the smell of waste. He pulled a book of matches from his coat pocket and drew a single match. Rubbing it against the side of the box, the tip of the stick crackled and white light filled the area. His fingers slid under the glass frame of the lantern and touched the wick, lighting it almost immediately. He shook out the match and flicked it into the muddy water. It fizzled in it's last breath. The sewer tunnel was about ten feet wide and six feet tall. Along the sides were small ledges big enough for vermin to crawl along. The water that ran threw the sewer came up to the boys ankles. He slowly walked forward looking down for pieces of trash. He noticed a glinting material in the waste below and reached down to retrieve it. As he pulled a large piece of reflective cloth and dropped it into the sack, he saw a pair of red eyes waving in the passing water below him. As he whipped around to catch the creature, it vanished. All that remained were the echoes as the rat scurried off. The boy's heart rate increased as the old man's voice rang through his mind..."They grow huge down here!" Every drop seemed to fall a little louder now. He pressed onward dragging his feet through the stinky sludge when a cool breeze swept through the tunnel. A breath of fresh air crawled into his nostrils and he was happy for the first time since descending into the sewer. The lantern flame flickered under the current and for a brief moment the tunnel grew dark. This time, the boy noticed several pairs of red eyes staring intently in his direction from the ledges of the tunnel. As the flame grew with the recent surge of oxygen the rats scurried off. Their squeaks could be heard as they grew distant. "Disgusting little things" the boy muttered under his breath. He wondered how any thing could live in such rotten conditions. As he took another step forward his foot snagged on something under the water's surface. He shook it but it snagged. He held the lantern up in his left hand as he reached down to free his foot. A rope had caught itself along the stone floor and formed a loop his toe had slid under. As he pushed the rope down and moved his foot up he felt a tickle at his ear, almost like whiskers. He turned to see what caused the tickle when he felt something bite down. Flailing his right arm up he smacked a thick, wet, furry body which splashed into the water behind him. All around him now were the red eyes. Some showed their long, yellowish white teeth as he aimed the lamplight in their direction. Some hissed. "Get back you devils!" he shouted as he shook the lamp at them. Some skittered away and then all at once they charged. The boy tried to run but his foot snagged the rope and he fell into the water. The lamp sunk and the tunnel went black. He thrashed his arms and legs as one by one they crawled over his body, biting him wherever they could. He grasped for his throat where a large rat with a patchy pelt was gnawing to the side of his Adam's apple. He gripped it around the neck and tugged but the beast's jaws clamped harder. With a hard pull the teeth ripped through his skin. Blood squirted as virgin flesh became exposed. His screams were muffled under gulps of sewage waste and gasps for air and the rats jumped in pairs into the water, swimming towards their dinner.
