Yeah I know that. That is why I lose to Tron badly and it doesn't work against affinity because they will still win even if I get it out and swing. Twin is somewhat similar so I always have to wait against them. Burn is always screwed though.

You are very right with the Ghost Quarters FAMOUSWATERMELON. I'll swap them with a couple of Pithing Needles.

Alright, so I did some research, and I have a couple ideas. A lot of these are only ideas and will probably never make it into the deck, but I just wanted to point them out to see if you had anything.

  1. Put a few Detention Spheres in main. They can get rid of Karn/Stone and are relevant in quite a few matchups, but at three mana, they're a bit clunky unfortunately.

  2. Keep in the Needles. They can be dead draws but they get the job done most of the time, so I don't see why not.

  3. Terastodon. I know it's ridiculously janky, but just hear me out for a second. It gets rid of Karn, O-Stone, AND the tron lands. It supports your token strategy late game. At a 9/9 body, it can certainly finish a few on its own.

Personally, I would put maybe two Spheres in because they're excellent cards in most matchups anyways (you currently have very little ways of dealing with Lilis and other annoying noncreatures things), and keep two needles in the side. If you really want to go the jank route, Mega-Elephant is also an option though :)

I like it FAMOUSWATERMELON, and that also made me think of other things to utilize:

After some thinking, I do believe the 3 I want to add in are

Do note that the opponent gets 3 elephants when I drop Terastodon down, so it isn't always a guarantee as they now got 3 turns to stall.

But what to remove for the sideboard? Progenitus is definitely going, but what else?

Hell I don't even need Sunblast Angel, just Elderscale Wurm.

That wurm ... so good. Storm, Twin, Merfolk, Zoo, Boggles ... all die to my Wurm!

I don't really like Slaughter Pact if your opponent can make you tappedout.net next turn you lose.

Femme_Fatale says... #7

There is no situations in which that will happen Raz0r_. It will however help me do an instant win against Hive Mind.

Okay, FAMOUSWATERMELON, I've done some testing with Terastodon, and here's what I've found:

The one turn in which Emrakul has summoning sickness and the 5 turns in which Terastodon hasn't killed the opponent yet (1 for summoning sickness, 3 for getting through each elephant token, and 1 turn for the first swing) generally ends up with the same results as the Tron player can easily recover in those five turns. While yes, Terastodon does stop anything that is currently on the field, it doesn't stop the recovery, and Terastodon is weak to more things than Emrakul in Wurmcoil Engine.

I just don't really know right now ... I'm tempted to just give up the tron match-up

I think that currently, there are two ways that this deck can go.

1) You go traditional Polymorph. You only run Spaghettis, perhaps some D-Spheres, Needle in side, etc...

2) You go a jankier route. Here's what I'm thinking: your main win-condition can be just plain old tokens, with anthems, souls, and perhaps more control elements than an old BW build. But here's the twist: you play 3x or 4x Research (with one Temple Garden or whatnot) and two or three "You Win" cards in the side. These can be Elderscale Wurm, which pretty much auto-wins you the game VS a lot of decks, good old Spaghettis when you need it, Elephant, Dragonlord Silumgar, whatever you think is appropriate. This will allow you to have an "I Win" button available at all times through Polymorph, but most of your deck will be centered towards an aggressive token approach (with 3x Research and 3x Polymorph, perhaps).

Of course, the second solution will probably be way less competitive than the current build, and you can just make a new deck if you want to keep this one the way it is. But I thought it might be an interesting solution to current meta problems (and I know that you like these kinds of semi-competitive decks :) ).

Which obviously leaves a rather big question: what's the best possible creature you can have out against Tron?

Why no Lingering Souls?

I actually tested this deck out via MTGO and I didn't have much luck with Slaughter Pact a blue control player made me tappedout and I lost. I don't know if I was playing the deck correctly?

Femme_Fatale says... #12

There are no modern playable cards that will tap out your lands before your upkeep step Raz0r_. You were most likely playing against a Jank build. Slaughter Pact is a very well known removal spell in modern, and it is quite useful for me in a format of infect, twin and bloom titan.

Femme_Fatale says... #13

Mainly because Timely Reinforcements is more important for me in the main when I'm not focusing on token damage xzzane. It's not necessarily the tokens that I need, but the fact that over 25% of the meta is aggro of some form means that I need the life when I'm winning by turns 6-8 or so.

December 7, 2015 4:30 p.m.

Ashen Rider for Tron? You could run two of them, and polymorph one into the other when you need some removal. It also hits anything.

Femme_Fatale says... #15

I thought of that, but exiling one thing isn't really good enough. And I generally removed Proteus Staff due to Stony Silence so repeatable morphing is a no-go.

Dragonlord Silumgar is a pretty awesome option for Tron matchups...

also here is my pet deck PolyRites (NOT A GIFTS DECK!), I have been playing an evolving esper Polymorph/Unburial Rites list since I started Modern (it's kind of my specialty lol)...if you have any questions I will be happy to help!

December 7, 2015 7:06 p.m.

I don't know. Swing 5, Polymorph Rider into Rider, exiling two permanents and you have an untapped 5/5 flyer. Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me... But Proteus Staff gives you removal on a stick for too...

It just depends on what route to go. I wrote a big wall of text above describing the two strategies, I don't know if you missed it.

Manlands are autoincludes in any control deck, polymorph or not (not counting blinkmoth).

December 8, 2015 11:56 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #20

I have manlands Dude_3.

I can't run Proteus Staff against Tron, FAMOUSWATERMELON, I put in Stony Silence and that shuts it down. Also, the morph results need to immediately win the game within a turn, and can't be susceptible to removal. Elderscale Wurm is okay for me because it stops decks that are very light on removal, but Ashen Rider doesn't really do anything.

Dragonlord Silumgar is just as weak to Tron as Emrakul is: If not weaker, as Ugin can deal with him, or Ugin + Pyroclasm. The biggest problem is that all Tron has to do is keep one O-stone/Karn in hand against me to hold off an Emrakul. Nothing changes for Tron when facing Silumgar either, so they are not weakened by its use at all, defeating the purpose of a sideboard card.

I looked at the number two option with research, I'm not really interested ... I'm not too keen on splashing for another colour and researching for stuff doesn't actually do much for me because I can't be guaranteed to morph into the stuff I'm researching. Remember I still need 1 of something in the main.

December 8, 2015 6:02 p.m.

Makes sense. As far as Tron goes, a bunch of people on this thread seemed to agree on the Elephant. At this point, I think that we're both just overthinking the problem though, just stick with the needle plan (instead of Chalice of the Void? Burn is already covered and you have enough removal for infect) and play with good old Spaghettis.

I think it would be much more efficient to do it the Travis Woo way, using fetches and Dryad Arbor to find creature to Polymorph. The colorless lands dilute the manabase, and other manlands slow it down.

Missed the Vents, lol.

I still feel like Tar Pits are superior but whatever.

December 9, 2015 8:15 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #24

Not really worth it Enryore. The Sultai version gives no alternative option. What are you going to do when the Morph part of the deck back fires?

I'm just testing the Chalice at the moment FAMOUSWATERMELON, because it also does well against storm and boggles, and when dropped at 2, merfolk as well. If they don't work I'll probably scrounge around for another decent sideboard option, like playing Iona against Merfolk and RDW.

I'm also wondering if you saw the Lingering Souls in the side xzzane ...

I have 1 Creeping Tar Pit Dude_3. I have more white than I do blue, especially post sideboard. That and lifegain is more important to me than unblockable damage, because I am plopping down an Emrakul.

Morcrux says... #25

Well maybe, Woo's version is much more combo-reliant after all. His idea is to Probe ahead and win counterwars whatsoever with Shoals, Leaks and card advantage, thus the dryad fetch almost never fail, and assures a quick combo finish.

I still like your version with Esper control splash, thought. But I still disagree on the Blinkmoths, as it's crucial to have access to all colors as control, and you're fine with a lot of tokens to Morph anyway.
