Have you considered Hatred ? It essentially becomes a 5 mana kill target player.

NinjaBunny01 says... #3

Thanks for the suggestion! I will probably pass on Hatred as the deck doesn't have enough creature focus and I really don't want to help any opponent's I may have.

Fair enough. Just keep in mind that if one of your opponents is attacking another you can target their attacking creature. Its best when they attack with commander.

I finally updated the deck list, wasn't as far behind as I thought. Let me know if there are better choices to put in and what to take out. Thanks!

Very nice deck I am currently thinking about building because I don't have a dedicated control deck in my arsenal at the moment.

What do you think about Aetherflux Reservoir in the deck, as you have many sources of life gain.

NinjaBunny01 says... #10

Thanks Granum. I have gone back and forth about adding Aetherflux Reservoir. The reason I haven't added it is yet is that I am not a dedicated life gain deck. With my focus being on control, I don't typically cast a lot of spells in a single turn to fully utilize the card. I am thinking about changing some aspects of the deck and testing some new things out, so it may be included after the possible changes. Thanks for the suggestion!

I see, thanks for the insight. I am really liking your decklist so far and would only change a few things based on my personal preference like including Smothering Tithe because I just love to play it along Rhystic Study! Also is there a reason you don't run Ancient Tomb as Oloro, Ageless Ascetic's ability mitigates the downside? As another way to win the game I would maybe run Approach of the Second Sun as it also provides a bit of lifegain but it also puts a target on you when you cast it first.

If you want to lean heavier into the lifegain archetype maybe include Fumigate instead of another board wipe you mentioned in possible cuts. And Test of Endurance as another win con in the lifegain scenario.

Just a few things I came up with and would like to hear your thoughts about, as I said overall I really like your control approach and will probably build the deck! Also I will run the Battlebond lands over the buddy lands as I exclusively play multiplayer games :)

Thanks Granum for the feedback. I was going to add the Smothering Tithe as part of the changes and actually updated the list to test it out. Great minds think alike :)

As for cards like Approach of the Second Sun and Test of Endurance, that are win more cards. They may work their way into the sideboard for card swaps against certain groups, but probably not into the main.

The Fumigate is a nice wrath, but I am reducing the total number of Wrath's as they more then often just take up a spot in your hand. May be a good swap for one of the others in a deck, but the cmc is high compared to other wrath's that do more. I may consider it in the future and will add it to the maybe board.

The only real reason I don't have Ancient Tomb in the deck is mostly due to the color intensive cards in the deck, though I might be putting it back in in the future with the new changes to the deck. Again thanks for the great suggestions!

hi, is it just me or does clicking on the combo/synergy part reveal no list? Like I thought there'd be a list of combos/synergies there but i see none

I am currently updating that part right now. So, you are correct about there being nothing there.

February 23, 2020 8:41 a.m.

I had the same question as defending faith. This list is epic! It does great justice to how awesome of a card Oloro is. What do you think of incorporating a stoneforge mystic along with boots and a batterskull/jitte?

February 23, 2020 10:30 p.m.

I see that you have this tagged as competitive. What is your win con? I also think you have a bit of a high avg cmc compared to most cEDH decks, so you may want to lower that. Lastly, with lifegain Ad Nauseam can get you a lot of cards real fast. There is a deck called bad farm that utilizes lifegain and ad nauseam that may give some ideas

flyinggrizzlybear Thanks, glad you like it. I am trying to decide how I want to "code" it and what items are relevant, so I don't really have a timeframe for when that will be done. As for the Stoneforge Mystic and the equipments, they don't help the decks goal or advance it. Cards like those are better suited towards more voltron/equipment style decks. In this deck, I would have to remove some of my control or life gaining advantage cards to add them in. Thanks for the suggestions though, I greatly appreciate any feedback!

GhostChieftain The win con in the mainboard right now is Debt to the Deathless and Felidar Sovereign as the instant win. The general strategy is to disable my opponent's plans for as long as possible then finish it off with one of the two, or grind it out with my bigger creatures. You are correct about the avg cmc being on the higher end, but I designed the main board to allow me the ability to play with non cEDH decks and not be overbearing. This makes the mainboard a little slower for cEDH. The sideboard is what I am looking at if power increase is needed. Adding in cards like Walking Ballista with the mainboarded Heliod, Sun-Crowned makes and infinite damage outlet while cards like Linvala, Keeper of Silence disables commanders like Thrasios, Triton Hero and Trickbind stops Protean Hulk. So I am looking into enhancing the decks power from my sideboard if needed. I am open to making direct swaps into the mainboard as there are cards like Divinity of Pride that aren't doing as much as other cards in the deck. I am on the lookout for cards to change things like that out for something with lower cmc. As for the Ad Nauseam, I would have to think about other cards to add in to the deck as well. It isn't as good alone, and the deck that you linked to is built more around it. I did have it in the sideboard along with Angel's Grace and Laboratory Maniac, but found that the deck doesn't run well trying to accomplish that combo and it is easily disrupted. I am looking for lower costing cmc variations to cards in the deck if you have anymore suggestions though. Thanks for the feedback, I greatly appreciated it.

Even without the angels grace, you should be able to hit a fat naus with your extra life. Instant speed 10+ cards for 5 mana and a bit of life is such a high value play and that is the reason many cEDH decks that are in black run it. If you can lower your avg below 2.5ish as well you will just get a metric ton of cards in hand.

Im not a big fan of sovereign as a win con due to the large amount of removal in the competitive scene. They will likely either just remove it or win with it on board before your turn comes around again. Especially rough since it is hard to land early.

Walking the line of being able to play competitively and not pubstomping less competitive stuff is very hard to do. In doing so you will likely still be stronger than the 75% decks, and you have kneecapped yourself vs cEDH. I would suggest picking a side to fall on with this deck and optimize for that so you arent the outlier at your tables

The real problem I have with it is I don't have a real finisher for it. I can go until I get my Reliquary Tower, but again I don't have cards that would help finish the game. And my land can easily get removed by Wasteland or Strip Mine, causing me to go back down to 7 anyways. I would probably be better off with Necropotence (which I have been considering adding, probably in place of Phyrexian Arena). My prior testing is why I'm leaning that way as it usually resulted in lots of cards in hand and not a lot to play. I do agree with the Sovereign being bad, which is why I have been thinking of removing it or adding in Flash. I will be testing that idea when I can. If you have a finisher idea to replace it, please let me know. Lastly, I agree with your assessment of the deck being held back a little bit. I am leaning towards just removing my infinite combo restrictions and going all in on cEDH. But I don't believe the deck will change to much. Thanks for the critique, it's greatly appreciated!

Honestly if you want a compact win con in your colors, the most powerful win con to go with would be Tainted Pact/Demonic Consultation and Thassa's Oracle/Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. I think Flash is 100% the wrong way to go because you aren't utilizing it in the way flash hulk decks do. Necropotence would be a fantastic addition. Reliquary tower seems unnecessary, discarding to hand size isn't all that bad honestly.

NinjaBunny01 says... #22

Yeah, Reliquary Tower has been in there from the start and has just stuck around for probably far to long. I will definitely consider replacing Sovereign with the above combo. Will have to test it out when I can. Thanks for the suggestions!

Mindcensor is important against any fish hulk decks and very good vs others with much search btw. I would add it back

Yeah, I am still tweaking the list. I may end up running both Mindcensor and Ashiok. Thanks for the advice!

Updated the list and brought down the CMC a bit more. Let me know if there are more suggestions on how to improve the deck. Thanks!
