I removed Prismatic Vista from my list, as well. There are simply not enough basics (and I run a few snow lands in addition to basic lands).

If you're not running Retreat to Coralhelm, would you still keep Sakura-Tribe Scout or run another piece of ramp?

I’d probably go with a different piece of ramp. Something like Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, Carpet of Flowers, Manabond or Utopia Sprawl would be things I’d consider.

Today I swapped in Silence and Pact of Negation after playing 1v1 against a Niv-Mizzet, Parun combo deck. It seems my decks weakness is that it doesn't have a way to stop creature based super combos. These spells not only can be offensive on an opponents turn (silence on their upkeep) but can also be played defensively on my turn to ensure a flawless execution of the game plan!

Also heavily in consideration for my testing is that Path to Exile. As mentioned before, the versatility of instantly answering a creature threat or even pathing one of my own creatures, perhaps even a token, for squeezing out that land drop may just make this card a must play. The Winds of Abandon is also a great card and very similar, but focuses more on midgame spot removal or late game board wipe. Its a bit of a toss up for me between the two... however, a one mana instant tempts me greatly, especially because I notice that I often have a single land open! Additionally, I have Swan Song in my deck due to it being a beautifully powerful card at one mana as well!

Starsky2814 - I'd probably go with Mox Diamond if I go that route. I may try to find a spot for Retreat, though. I actually cut Ashaya, Soul of the Wild to put Parcelbeast back in but I still have a flex spot or two. I'm running 1 extra land (really like the Strip Mine and Wasteland synergy)... So many decisions!

rkjunior, Mox Diamond would be the best choice. Also, I’m actually thinking about adding Strip Mine, finally, since I removed both Armageddon and Ravages of War. I still want some way to remove lands. I personally like Ashaya, Soul of the Wild, but it is a flex card for me and can be replaced with something better down the road. So I feel you’ll be fine without it.

Arzais, I too have a Niv-Mizzet, Parun deck I face regularly. Things I would consider to add to help would be Drannith Magistrate, Shalai, Voice of Plenty, Narset, Parter of Veils, Oko, Thief of Crowns, Teferi, Time Raveler, Teferi, Master of Time, Kenrith's Transformation and Darksteel Mutation. I’ve had huge success in shutting down Niv with such cards in the past. Hopefully you find it helpful.

That Kenrith's Transformation (draws a card!?!) and Darksteel Mutation crack me up! xD I find them great due to the inability to recast the commander! Thanks for the tips! ^^

Arzais, also, Silence is a solid add if needed. I went with Teferi, Time Raveler instead when I considered the card. I wish Winds of Abandon was instant speed, but I prefer to have the mass removal over the singleton removal when it comes to having little removal in a deck.

No problem! I feel your pain when up against a Niv-Mizzet, Parun combo deck. I had to learn how to shut it down long ago and those have always been some ace in the holes for me. I hope you can have the same success.

I'm debating removing Rhystic Study. I'm finding more and more it's a waste of 3 mana and it rarely nets me any cards, especially in the later game. May substitute that for Retreat.

I’ve kind of felt the same way about Rhystic Study and thought about replacing it with either Teferi's Ageless Insight or Consecrated Sphinx. I would advise against cutting draw for Retreat to Coralhelm unless you feel you are still in a good spot without it.

I'd be more inclined to keep it if it actually drew me cards. I might replace it with another hard draw spell.

What other draw do you have in mind?

Starsky2814 I recently discovered Ruin Ghost If you can produce infinite mana that's infinite landfall triggers with Retreat to Coralhelm

Do you guys think that Escape to the Wilds and/or Urban Evolution are resonable draw cards?

unwucht says... #17

The best card draw is still card draw. Quasi-carddraw like exiling cards and being allowed to play them is only a viable solution if you do not have access to blue - which we can't complain about. I understand your feelings regarding Rhystic Study, it usually draws so much hate that it will be removed early on to prevent you going off extremely. Two things: If it isn't the advantage is enourmous. And second: It robs your opponents of one removal spell. I'd rather have my Rhystic removed than another combo piece. But those are only my two cents. I will keep Rhystic in my list a little longer, but I had been considering cutting it to make room for Retreat to Coralhelm

Yeah it is dawning on me.

I'm going to see if I miss Rhystic Study by replacing it with Retreat to Coralhelm. For anyone curious, here's the current version of the list I've been playing. Part of me misses the 37th land, though.

Jensu08, yeah, that also works for infinite landfalls and wouldn’t require a bounce land. I just prefer the early game advantage I can get with Sakura-Tribe Scout by cheating in a land. Ruin Ghost is helpful if you have the space for it.

Arzais, honestly I don’t care much for Escape to the Wilds or Urban Evolution. Sure, they bring on the synergy. But, there are still much better draw out there and thanks to fetch lands, I don’t feel like the additional land play they provide is worth it either. I’m considering to add either Consecrated Sphinx or Shamanic Revelation at this point for a replacement draw.

unwucht, it didn’t dawn on me that you didn’t have Retreat to Coralhelm in your build. If I don’t have Sakura-Tribe Scout with it, I usually use the landfall triggers to tap my opponents creatures down or scry if I need some fixing. I’ve had too many good times with that card in my old Omnath, Locus of the Roil deck that it was a no brainer for me to also include here.

rkjunior, your deck is beast, my friend! I always enjoy unwucht and your deck updates. We have truly created monsters.

Would it be crazy to consider another Finale, as in Finale of Glory?

Or Tempt with Vengeance. That would be nasty with Risen Reef

Tempt with Vengeance would be great with Risen Reef and Purphoros, God of the Forge. I'm tempted to try Carpet of Flowers after seeing it in action against me in a previous game.
