Phantasmal Image instead of Merfolk Sovereign . With Spreading Seas and your other 2 drop Lords, Sovereign's unblockable ability is pointless.

Tidebinder Mage in the sideboard for any deck that runs Tarmogoyf

@Kaitoghost Great suggestions, My main concern is not getting into Spreading Seas which could obviously be a huge issue. But if that is not really an issue then Phantasmal Image will definitely be better at in all instances.

I don't see Goyf much but I suppose that would be awesome if this deck does happen to run into it or something else big and red/green to stop it immediately in its tracks. Is Tidebinder Mage a 4 of or less?

drop 2 Echoing Truth for 2 Vapor Snag and 2 land for 2 Cursecatcher

I was planning to use Echoing Truth to save my stuff if needed from like board wipes or artifact pop if I had no control available. I'll move it over to maybe board and see how that goes.

How does a god work when it isnt a creature? it still confuses me. can it still attack and defend like one?

@Icebox1442 When Thassa (or any god) is not a creature you, in essence, have a Legendary Enchantment that provides you abilities, like in this instance I still get to Scry 1 at my upkeep and I can use the activated ability to provide my creatures with the unblockable status until end of turn.

The only thing that changes is once I reach devotion 5 (Being 5 blue in converted mana cost among all permanents I control) it then becomes a creature and I can attack/block with it.

@Icebox1442 you're very welcome!

@leo300 Kira is already in my sideboard for this deck and in my meta Phantasmal Image is going to be very important against Emrakul

Nice deck! I would consider replacing Spreading Seas with Aquitect's Will - it costs one less and it's also a tribal Merfolk card.

xlaleclx says... #13

Aquitect's Will is bad. Spreading seas keeps them off a colour, gets rid of stuff like Celestial Colonnade and Gavony Township and gets rid of tron lands

Thanks xlaleclx for beating me to it

First, I think Kira, Great Glass-Spinner should see MB play. I'd take out Master of Waves for this. Sure he's a good card, but I feel regular mono-u merfolk isn't the place for him. (See blue moon decks)

As for sideboard, think about what your current meta has a lot of. Graveyard interactions? Go with Relic of Progenitus . It's easily casted and shreds their gy.

That's about all I can come up with for SB. Hope it helps~

Blue Moon isn't a real deck and master of waves has been in every real merfolk list since the pro tour

BLEATH says... #17

What else would you suggest taking out for 2x Kira, Great Glass-Spinner s MB? I feel it's very effective at keeping your creatures on-board against any matchup.

And also: You could argue that soul sisters isn't a "real deck", or any other non-teir 1-1.5 modern deck. Just because it's not played a lot doesn't make it fake or bad. Heck, just look at when people were just discovering certain card interactions. Modern is a format for diversity in decks without having 90% of the same ones.

There is a bit of GY play locally but in reality not much. A few snaps maybe and one actual deck that plays with GY besides one off brand Pod deck. So not a lot in summary. Still enough that I could easily replace Lullmage Mentor with Relic and not be heart broken at all.

I am very unsure about bouncing over Kira from the SB. If I did it would be for Thassa and not Master of Waves tbh.

Blue moon isn't a deck because it wasn't designed to be a real deck or a good deck. It exists because they creators had a good read on the meta of the pro tour and built a deck specifically to beat that meta. It's not a good deck at all, it was just a very good meta call by those who brought it to the pro tour.

I'd drop Thassa for Kira. Thassa isn't particularly impactful in modern. She's good in the deck but Kira is better a huge portion of the time.

wondering why Phantasmal Image is in the sideboard with the m14 rules change, maybe drop for Hurkyl's Recall , Pithing Needle or Grafdigger's Cage .

-MisterJ- says... #23

You will notice Hurkyl's Recall in the sideboard already. Phantasmal Image is in the sideboard because I only really use it against Tron.dec, the others you listed are okay but I don't see really replacing what I have in my board with any of them

OpenFire says... #24

oh woops lol

May 29, 2014 4:02 p.m.

-MisterJ- says... #25

@OpenFire: After looking I think making room for Pithing Needle is a good idea, especially if I fire up against a Pod deck, and while I'm sure they can easily remove my Pithing Needle that gives me more time to aggro in, and wastes a spell/mana that they could use to blow up AEther Vial and what not. So yeah, good call. I'll try and swing that before the PTQ. Thanks for the insight!
