I would like to see Rise/Fall here. One of the best Red/Black Discard cards there is as far as i'm concerned for modern. You seem to be all over the place with your spells and mana which is going to make playing your deck a little unorganized. Cut out all of those lands and make it simple
4x Verdant Catacombs or Marsh Flats
3x Arid Mesa
4x Tectonic Edge - this is for manlands so they don't kill you
Blackcleave Cliffs and Blood Crypt are good if you want em.
Fill the rest with basics unless you find the Rix Madi that good.
You also have like 1 creature which is a good creature but it wont save you vs a lot of decks out there. Some sort of creature base would be awesome for you.
Some nice things 8 Rack can use :
Quest for the Nihil Stone - now you have 12 rack!
Skred is a good option since you're running Snow basics. It basically works as path to exile.
i've seen some people use Phyrexian Crusader equipped with Runechanter's Pike As a finisher. Might be good to explore.
If you adjust your land to where I suggest, Blood Moon Becomes a lot easier to use. Hope you find inspiration!

well Ensnaring Bridge is y my creature base is non-existent save Bitterblossom .
Spellskite is more of a shield than a creature. It protects my Ensnaring Bridge Bitterblossom Shrieking Affliction and The Rack . All key things that die to Abrupt Decay which is among the most common game 1 removal.
Quest for the Nihil Stone falls into the "Triggers the same as Liliana's Caress category" Which is y Waste Not won't make the cut either. Truthfully, quest is even slower than those cards. Personally I feel Nezumi Shortfang is the best option if I wanted to go that route. Which after numerous attempts at making it work, I've settled on it just doesn't work.
Skred + Boros Reckoner is awesome if ur running nothing but snow lands but I think that kind of thing detours from the focus too much.
Same thing with Phyrexian Crusader , good card and combination but wrong deck for it. Infect is fun, and Mono-Black Infect is flavorful.
Well theres 6 black fetches as they can grab any color I need, where as the red fetches I would be required to run can only grab R/U or R/W. I'm almost thinking it's not worth it for Blood Moon considering what I would have to give up to make it work and that I own the black fetches but don't actually own any Scalding Tarn or Arid Mesa . I think I'll go back to my non-trying-to-work-BM-in mana base. Far more consistent.
Ensnaring Bridge shuts down manlands and Smallpox which I've used countless times to stop someone from even having enough mana to activate their manlands. I know Tectonic Edge can keep an opponent at 3 mana if they need to keep their Treetop Village alive but I think it will do more harm than good in a Pox deck, especially without DRS.
As for Rise/Fall the issue with that card is that it doesn't hit lands which often will be the cards people hang onto. It's just wayyyyy too inconsistent. Wrench Mind would be a far superior choice as it at least guarantees 1 card even when playing affinity. This is all the reason y there is no Inquisition of Kozilek . The more targeted discard u have, the more likely u are to miss, and a 1 for none sucks.
April 5, 2014 12:07 p.m.
Actually Tectonic Edge in a pox deck is pretty disgusting. Reference my build PoxRack. Tectonic Edge is one of the reasons that Smallpox is a great build, over even Ensnaring Bridge IMHO. Basically the first few turns should be 8rack shredding hand, and the opponent desperately trying to build a board, which means they are forced to choose lands above spells even if the spells aren't stripped by Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek . That is where a turn 4 Tectonic Edge + Smallpox one-two punch shines. It means they are not only top decking to win cons but to a new mana base as well and they can't just cast what they draw. Rethink think this card at least, if you don't go with any of the others. It alone makes RG Tron a winnable match. Nothing else in the normal lists right now can do that. Also 4 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth eases on the mana base when you use utility lands.

4x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is over kill and pointless when I only have 3 lands that need to be converted. This isn't Legacy, where I'm running 8+ cololress. 4x Urborg in this deck is a waste of money. Edit:Saw ur deck, and understand y u would suggest it, but your deck has a poor mana base and needs it.
I've played extensively with Tectonic Edge in a Pox deck (with DRS) and while your above scenario does happen, more often than not Tectonic Edge will screw u over. Yes there will be tons of times u r glad to have it, but there also tons of times when u wish u had just about anything else.
As far as your deck, I think u should MB the bridges. I like the MB Bob but would still rather have the bridges.
April 9, 2014 11:23 a.m.
So if you had read my description on PoxRack you would understand that I have probably played both versions, including mainboard Ensnaring Bridge . The problem with bridge is that with affinity and Birthing Pod Running rampant people are starting to run mainboard artifact hate, albeit lightly, and heavy artifact hate after board meaning that bridge is a dead card holding back a monster temporarily. You often need to lay 2-3 of them for them to be effective. There is probably a reason you chose to run a MB Spellskite right? I have just found more success with resource denial and creature control. Also, if I'm running Bob and Liliana of the Veil s, I obviously am not too worried about the price of Urborgs. Also, keep in mind that I am running one color and can afford to have 8 utility lands with Urborg and if that's the case then Tec edge and Mutavault are it and they are game winners. I didn't suggest you use Mutavault though because you have direct burn so you don't need them meaning that Tectonic Edge has room, where it can do work, a point you've conceded. Also if we're going into mana base critiques you have too many shock lands in a deck that wins by attrition. You don't have any chance against burn or delver or UWR control and your discard package is too heavy with little board control, putting pressure on bridge to stand alone to deal with the rest.

American Control is non-existing in my LGS meta & so is RDW/Burn.
My meta is all Twin/Combo, Jund, Pod, & Affinity. ...sometimes Tron.
Normally I wouldn't make comments like that but my LGS & house r the only places this deck will ever see any play. It's a secondary deck & I run my main deck at any non-casual event.
U r right about a few things. The purpose of Spellskite and Buried Ruin are to offer some resilience to bridges and racks. I am running about 2 too many Blood Crypt .
Discard package has been tweaked to what it is now. U say it's heavy, but ur running more than me lol.
I've built about 10 different 8Rack builds with just about every discard card u could imagine incorporated. From Blackmail
to Sword of Feast and Famine
with Bitterblossom
. I can honestly say this is without a doubt the strongest build so far. I can also say, no matter how well u build it, it's not a Tier 1 deck.
Check out my Legacy Pox deck which is more a long the lines of the route your deck takes. MONO BLΔCK CONTROL
Nether Void lock trumps Ensnaring Bridge lock any day!

I read your descript but didn't see anything. I like your match write ups. I always Surgical Extraction peoples lands and fetches. They always seem surprised, seems every one thinks the card doesn't hit non-basic lands, until it happens to them :)
April 9, 2014 12:17 p.m.
I run "more" discard? Lol I run 13 pieces of pure non-interactive discard. Smallpox
and Liliana of the Veil
dual as board control and aren't by any means only for discard. You run one less than me in that respect and you don't have the set of Inquisition of Kozilek
which you could be choosing over Thoughtseize
when running discard and Land denial. I run the that because I have room not running bridge which is in the sideboard if I just need it.
I have tested every color splash including Blood Moon
(which actually was fun lol) Life from the Loam
and Lingering Souls
. Honestly If I went with white I would choose Leonin Arbiter
and Ghost Quarter
over Tectonic Edge
but that's a different story. I'm by no means saying your deck is weak or that mines better I just think you're under appreciating mine for the sake of competition. I was just throwing in a suggestion about Tectonic Edge
but I know you know your build better.
But I will say if you're running this build in a meta with guaranteed Tron you should be looking for an "edge" to swing that matchup, because it is not favorable for you right now.
PS- thanks for the props on the game update. I love surgical. It pulls weight haha! :)
April 9, 2014 12:50 p.m.
PS- Nether Void FTW lmao. Yea I play Pox in legacy so I ported it to modern after seeing 8Rack on YouTube. Turns out the pox shell is still gruesome in modern especially when your Sinkhole s tap for mana lol

Well... this is the deck I do run in my meta Of Plague & Persecution which is actually situated better than most Rock decks vs Tron because of the inclusion of Smallpox I also still pack the full Fulminator Mage playset. Used to also rock Crucible of Worlds (which is fun) and Tectonic Edge which actually doesn't help in the Tron match up as they can go off with just the Urza lands T3 before the edge can do anything.
Soon as I buy my Gofy & Bob play sets (only G/B Rock pieces I am missing) G/W Hatebears is gonna be the next deck I build with the Kitty & Ghost Housing.
I'm, sorry if it came across as I was trying to put your deck down, that wasn't what I intended. I was just pointing out that 8 colorless lands in a modern Smallpox deck is usually fairly harsh. I understand that Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth makes it work but by running 4 of a Legendary land, and 4 Tech Edges and 4 Smallpox and Raven's Crime and Mutavault which I'm sure ur opponent will GQ or TE themselves. U r really cutting into your own cake.

Rain of Tears is modern's Sinkhole ...Oh how I wish Sinkhole was modern legal.
April 9, 2014 2:11 p.m.
It's not as restrictive as you think. The new legendary rule on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth means that you can either use it if you really need to, or pitch it to raven's crime. Neither of which really set back a deck that can and does win on 2 or 3 land. Mutavault s are threats that get under a lot of removal and aren't very vulnerable to an opponent with no hand and who wont have a hand when you activate it. Plus when you draw 2 or three of them and there's no way to get rid of them, they end a game quick. Plus if they Tectonic Edge a Vault, there are three more on the way and my opponent goes without another land, and still has to deal with Dark Confidant , The Rack , Shrieking Affliction and Liliana of the Veil so their priorities will always be elsewhere. Plus the whole point of hand control is to keep key spells out of their hand, as I've demonstrated with my win against Tron yesterday, in my Updates. If Tron never plays a fourth land I'm fine with it because Tectonic Edge is only a backup to Smallpox in that situation, if they start off with a basic or something. Meanwhile, they will eventually discard that land they were holding to something worse. Rain of Tears is allllmost playable for my list (I tried it for a stint) but Modern is a format with a higher CMC average and opponents stuck on 2 or 3 land, which is possible without Rain of Tears is just as bad as a legacy deck stuck on one or two land, and frees up slots for higher value pressure spells. That's just my reasoning for the card choices I made. Like I said though you could be right about not being able to fit it in Rakdos. And yea, Sinkhole would be Boss lol.

How do you guys feel about Grim Lavamancer and Anger of the Gods MB?
May 26, 2014 12:42 p.m.
HellSurfist says... #16
Anger of the Gods is a strong card. It's MB use depend on the meta you're playing in. I would use it mainboard if you're against a lot of zoo and affinity. It would be btw a great sideboard card. I'm not a fan of Grim Lavamancer , but I've never tested it. It's a nice replacement for Deathrite Shaman , but it's a creature. I would not run creature in this build (only Spellskite ), especially if you would use Anger of the Gods MB.It's a nice build and I think you can improve it! +1 for me :)
May 26, 2014 1:35 p.m.
Yeah Anger of the Gods is really good if you can reliably get the double red required. If the mono black list had access to a reliable 3cmc wipe I'm sure we'd be running it.
I think Grim Lavamancer is good in the deck. I especially like how it kills creatures, though I'd be inclined not to run it because it will just eat removal. Deathrite Shaman used to be good though, so it's worth testing.
So, basically what hellsurfist said. :P
I like the list, being able to run Lightning Bolt , Anger of the Gods and Blood Moon seems pretty damn good.
Why the green land splash? Just for SB abrupt decay?
May 26, 2014 9:22 p.m.
APPLE01DOJ says... #18
Yea, just for Abrupt Decay . I kinda am tempted to run Treetop Village which is such an all star. Not sure there is enough room for the filters to make it happen though.
May 26, 2014 10:18 p.m.
HellSurfist says... #19
Be careful with Treetop Village . Remember that you're using Ensnaring Bridge and it's hard to have 3 cards in your hand :)
May 27, 2014 12:48 p.m.
APPLE01DOJ says... #20
Well it's a back up plan in case they can deal with the bridge or it doesn't get drawn. I dunno, in my green splash build I made a while ago (back in the good ole DRS days) I had Treetop Village in and it was a constant win-con, even if the racks weren't active.
Just not sure this mana base could handle it. lol if only DRS were unbanned.
May 27, 2014 3:14 p.m.
Ohh my i whant in this deck Waste Not ! (but it might be banned)
July 1, 2014 5:13 a.m.
APPLE01DOJ says... #22
Look at the pic.
Waste Not doesn't work too well in 8Rack. If it did we would all be running Liliana's Caress . I may throw in a singleton but in place of what?
July 1, 2014 10:57 a.m.
I think in place of Ensnaring Bridge but i need to say for me Waste Not T3 in discard gonna be a game, just read it when it give mana you play even more discard spells, discarded creatures make your own army & it gain more draw in deck like that than Dark Confidant that's why i think it might be banned. He just give help you to don't end on ToP deck mode after you play all your discard spells sooo (Liliana's Caress only give dmg because of that is not worf it)

Young pyromancer is a brilliant Idea! Do you find him to be a suitable replacement for Ensnaring Bridge just by spamming blockers?

Still testing, just put him in yesterday. Only played against a control deck but he wrecked shop in the match. Took a couple copies for one to stick though...

Rakdos Charm in these colors is a must. Does everything you want against a variety of decks. Grave hate, Kills Pods, and Pwns Splinter Twin. Sideboard of course
