Even with the solid card draw + Salvage.. I still feel this deck needs a couple of more creatures. 19 is really light for a Varolz build.

I dont like Korozda Guildmage ... I personally think that you should take out the two of them for two more Dreg Mangler

Also 2 Jarad's Orders for 2 Diregraf Ghoul since they are great with the scavenge ability...

@justavictim82 I agree that I need more creatures, I'm actually considering dropping both farseeks and my death's presence for more creatures, bumping it to 22. Probably more Lotleth Troll Dreg Mangler and possibly Wild Beastmaster .

@KingPimp I don't like the Korozda Guildmage either haha, they're simply just something to fill up the space and not too horrible of a scavenge cost with Varolz. Plans are to grab two more Dreg Mangler , one more Lotleth Troll and Wild Beastmaster to help provide some consistency throughout the deck. And I see what you mean with the Diregraf Ghoul since he too is amazing with Scavenge, but Jarad's Orders are allowing me to tutor my library for a card, and send something to my graveyard to help combo cards. I'll probably give it a try if I can grab a few, and try it out to see if it works better.

Thanks for the advice!

I personally don't like Rot Farm Skeleton at all. I am not big on Slitherhead either. Slitherhead is card disadvantage. Obviously he is a one drop but a 1/1 for 1 is vanilla. So you can scavenge 1 for free? Still not impressed. I made a similar build but made it more Jund by splashing Red for Vexing Devil .... even if you wanted to stay G/B, I would consider Gravecrawler . Solid 1 drop for 2/1, you are running a boatload of Zombies for reanimation, keeps Varolz alive and in a pinch... can be scavenged for cheap. I would dump the farseeks as well. It is just not something that really fits this build considering your top end curve is 4 (Vraska being the only thing above 4). Farseek is better used in mid-range to ramp to 5-6 CMC drops earlier or control so it can start putting the umbrella up. Also more than 1x Lotleth Troll .. you are pretty light on two drops. Another creature to consider is Vampire Nighthawk ... while not a Zombie he is a good scavenge target because of evasion and anti-aggro with the lifelink and deathtouch.

@justavictim82 I agree with the Rot Farm Skeleton card either, he is just the only thing I have right now. Haven't been able to run to the card shop to get more cards. And while Slitherhead looks like a card disadvantage, in this deck he plays very well. With Corpsejack Menace on the field, that's two counters. And he is more there for two other reasons. Varolz's regenerate, and Lotleth Troll 's ability to discard a card and get a +1/+1 counter. Have Lotleth and corpsejack out together, and I can discard slitherhead and scavenge him for 0 mana to put 4 counters total on Lotleth. I will probably drop one Slitherhead for a multiple of another card like Deathrite Shaman Dreg Mangler or more LotLeth. I'm going to drop the farseeks tonight, I'm just going to have to debate on what cards I'd switch out. I've been considering Treasured Find because a lot of times I lose cards with Grisly Salvage or that are countered and killed, or sacrificed or discarded through my other card's abilities, and I just think that it would be useful. Finally, I've been considering Vampire Nighthawk for a while. I didn't actually plan to make this a zombie deck haha, but nevertheless, I agree that Nighthawk is an absolute tank. Probably the king of uncommons, and as well an amazing scavenge target.

One more option creature-wise to consider with this deck build if you add more creatures is Ghoultree . With all the stuff being dumped into your graveyard, he should be able to be cast on the cheap. A 10/10 body realistically turn 4-5 at the latest shouldn't be underestimated. No trample sucks but he can swing in and demands a block as well as being a good fling for Jarad. As a bonus (as it seems you are building on a budget) 2-3 should be very cheap and he is a solid body.

justavictim82 I've definitely been considering Ghoultree as an option for this deck. Between the fling with Jarad, relatively cheap for my deck, more creatures, and if I have the mana to scavenge with Varolz, he is a very useful creature. My only hesitation is that he will be going out of standard relatively soon, but seeing as how he isn't an expensive creature, next time I'm at the card shop I will probably pick up a few. Now I'm trying to work on my sideboard, but I honestly don't even know where to start.

well i would side atleast 3 Naturalize and maybe 2 more Abrupt Decay as well as 2 more Golgari Charm and maybe a couple more Vraska the Unseen for those extremely slow control games where she could actually win the game for you... also another Vampire Nighthawk could go in the sideboard and if you have them as many Liliana of the Veil as you can get in there i would actually maindeck her if you have some, Devour Flesh is the cheaper option, and if you have lilianas than you can maideck her and side Devour Flesh ..

StormZing says... #11

KingPimp alright thanks for the help! I think Liliana of the Veil might be a little out of my price range, but if I can grab it I definitely will. Otherwise, maybe Tribute to Hunger or Devour Flesh would be more viable options at the moment. Definitely going to add the rest! Now to just to add a handful more cards and I believe the sideboard will be almost fully functional.

KingPimp thanks! And Tormod's I can definitely do, and I might even consider mainboarding the 4th deathrite if I can get my hands on it. Thanks for the help!

I'm looking to make a deck just like yours! thanks for suggesting a good build. I can't test yet because I'm waiting for my cards. Maybe you should find a spot for Desecration Demon . Maybe take out Rot Farm Skeleton

StormZing says... #16

MTGolgari I've been debating Desecration Demon for a while now, but I haven't decided what cards I would add in for some. Right now, I'm trying to get multiples of other cards. And thank you for the comment about Rot Farm Skeleton , I actually had already taken him out, but forgot to get rid of him on this website! I appreciate the idea, and if I get the chance I'll probably try to fool around with other ideas.

also, i don't think having 2 Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord is really needed i think that one is all you need..

May 23, 2013 11:36 a.m.

justavictim82 says... #21

King Pimp he needs 2x Jarad. It is his only solution if he stalls out and you need the better ods of getting to him. There is not a ton of card draw in here so he needs as much help closing the gameout as possible.

Desecration Demon is too slow in this bulid

May 23, 2013 12:28 p.m.

KingPimp says... #22

no, i don't think so... jarad is annoying to draw both of and also he has 2 Jarad's Orders so it isn't that hard for him to get to the one jarad, try playtesting his deck i bet you will draw right into the one jarad as easy as if there were 2 (i mean if he DOES take one out).. with cards like Sign in Blood and Grisly Salvage and Jarad's Orders he can get to the one jarad pretty easy and that second one is just taking up a slot (in my perspective)

KingPimp says... #23

also, i think you should add 3 Diregraf Ghoul instead of running those Slitherhead s..

May 23, 2013 1:09 p.m.

StormZing says... #24

justavictim82 I haven't decided what I'm going to do with Desecration Demon yet, simply because I've yet to play with it and see how it fares comparatively to the rest of the deck as a whole. However, you are correct that there isn't a whole lot of card draw in this deck. It does however, have the ability to tutor and grab what I need. And I agree with you about the Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord . It is really my strongest asset for when I begin to stall out. It has great synergy with the rest of my cards, and the ability to sacrifice a swamp and a forest to add it back to my hand is phenomenal. Not to mention, Jarad's second ability allows for me possibly deal enough damage to an opponent to win the game if it goes into a late game.

Now KingPimp you're right about how easy it is for me to get a Jarad. I can send him to the graveyard and grab him through his last ability if need be. Jarad is quite resilient in the sense that he does keep coming back. However, I'm not entirely sure how many Jarad's I will be running in this deck. I might only run 1 and 1 Desecration Demon , or maybe play 2 and sideboard 2 for bigger control games. Especially since the new Legendary rule that is being put into place, have more than one is also rather useful. I've not decided on what to do with them, that will mostly depend on how well the demon works in here. Finally, I know that the Diregraf Ghoul is a MUCH better one drop than Slitherhead , but it is the consistency that the slitherheads provide for this deck that works much better. Because I can't always scavenge the diregraf ghoul, I can only do it if I control a Varolz, the Scar-Striped . Also, being a hybrid color allows me to play him with any land in my deck on the off chance that I do drop the slitherhead. Slitherhead is mostly just as a card to discard for Lotleth Troll , and then scavenge him instantly to get lotleth up ASAP. However, Slitherhead is not an amazing card, and although he synergizes well with a lot of my cards, I will be dropping 1 for at a Dreg Mangler or Lotleth Troll , and eventually getting rid of the Treasured Find s, one for each of the previously stated.
