First attempt at Origins draft. 8-person group.

I went in wanting to draft the UG Tempo archetype and lucked out getting a Soulblade Djinn as my first pick in pack 1. Blue also ended up being grossly underpicked (and after playing with it, I can see why) so I lucked out in that regard as well.

Pack 2 had Key and Peel (Pia and Kiran Nalaar) and nothing else really worth picking so I hate picked it and was happy enough to do so as I wanted a copy for my collection anyway. Unfortunately, Red was very clearly being overpicked (along with White) so nothing came my way and I couldn't justify splashing for one card that had RR in its cost even if it is close to being the best Rare in the set.

Unfortunately, I didn't get passed any real noncreature spells in my colors (and by the time I saw an Unholy Hunger, I was too deep in UG). I could have taken sideboard stuff like Negate or Aerial Volley plenty of times, but I think it's better that I didn't (I never ran into any situations where they definitely would have helped). I had Stratus Walk and Send to Sleep passed to me a few times, but there were just always better picks. I do regret not taking the Hydrolash passed to me and one or two Nissa's Pilgrimages I saw, but not terribly so.

Final record was a 4-2-0.

Special notes on the colors:

• White is so good that even when spread thin it can do a lot.
• Blue is possibly the weakest color. Even with how little it was being picked, I could see how few options it has (especially in the early game).
• Black runs about average this set. I was neither impressed with it nor did I think it was pretty easy to deal with.
• Red just has the best removal this set. It also has the next best early game after White.
• Green seems to be a fairly deep color, but not terribly so. I thought it would be better thanks to some of its heavy hitters and bombs, but ultimately I think this format is just a bit too fast for it.

Notable card observations:

• Foil Erebos's Titans are cool looking. They're also difficult to get into play (which I am thankful for).
• Mage-Ring Responder basically has vigilance and then some... Usually top decking removal is a pretty good feeling, but Claustrophobia isn't exactly perfect.
• Akroan Jailer is not Gideon's Lawkeeper. I was thoroughly unimpressed.
